Just got an alert from 3camels on these cheap passive bookshelf speakers. Pretty much the only passives in this price category.

WHAT?
Nah, good tip.
WHY KANYE WEST CAPTIONS
He forgot the amplifier and has to yell loudly instead to power his speakers.
Thanks for sharing. Waiting for S2000/S3000 deal.
Got these for $59 in Dec last year to replace the rears on my Pioneer receiver, sound great.
I have a Logitech Z906 connected to 3.5mm to a laptop, looking to replace the rear speakers. Is that considered an amplifier or do you need an actual dedicated amp/receiver used in full hifi systems?
Yes, but I think you would need to check whether the speaker impedance (measured in Ohms Ω) suits the amplifier, otherwise you risk irreversible damage.
Put these in my son's room up in each corner of a wall he projects onto with a cheap projector. We use a small class d amp off Amazon to drive them. Plenty of options for $80 to $150 that also do bluetooth.
Can I plug this into an old Goldstar Vinyl player?
My dad still has it plugged in with some dodgy-ass speakers with the back MDF half destroyed. Same connection type too, it's just got thin gauge wire with spring clips to the back of the player.
Thanks for any advice!
As with the above question around replacing a couple of Logitech speakers, it will depend on the impedance expected by the amplifier. Like for like and you should be fine.
As long as those speakers are passive as well, it would suggest you don't need an amplifier. Are you sure there isn't an amp in that set up?
Yeah, I believe no amp. He just runs the big damn square unit.
No idea what speakers they were, no brand aswell, no idea of what I'm dealing with, without probably actually tearing those things apart. Also, super hard finding any real information on the "Goldstar GSD 21P" produced in 88 - 89, 6 years before the company merged with Lucky Chemicals to make LG. There isn't even a photo of the damn thing online.. 🤣
Suggestions for an amp to drive them?
Check out cheapaudioman on youtube. He has some great reviews

Personally, I've got my eye on a little Fosi BL20A for about $85. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002619019915.html
Main thing I like about it vs other cheapies is that it comes with a remote!
Note: I don't have this, so I don't really know if it's any good. Figure that based on reviews of similar models, and for the price, it's worth a shot.
What would be the cheapest amp with an HDMI input be ?
If you're after cheapest, just look pre-owned
A Denon or Yamaha off marketplace. Keep in mind they'll almost universally be HDMI 1.4 or older so you won't be able to use with 4K HDR sources and television.
Can anyone comment on sq on these vs the Voll P44?
I don't have these myself, but I do have the P44s and think they sound pretty good. The bass isn't boomy, but they're nice and clear and perfect for nearfield use.
I don't have either of these speakers, but have been looking at various bookshelfs.
Specs wise, the Voll P44 is better.
Edifier P17: 50Hz-20KHz, 20W, 77dB
Voll P44: 60Hz-20KHz, 80W, 88dB
The 77dB signal to noise ratio on the Edifier P17 is low. From those I've been looking at, I haven't seen any others rated in the 70s.
FWIW, I don't care about low end response. If I grab some bookshelf speakers, I'd be looking at a sub off gumtree.
These are for rear right not mains?
These are solid speakers over all mate - they weigh like 6kgs each, so i'd say they can work pretty damn fine in a 2.1 set up.
AARRGH! I was just about get these at $96 like today, now they're $129.
edit: Nevermind I managed to get the $64 price using the other options selection on the side with the New (#) From.
I guess someone must have canceled their $64 order, Yippee.
Back up to regular price. Would have snapped up a pair at the discounted price if they were 8ohm.
you can get it here lad https://edifier-online.com/au/en/speakers/p17-passive-booksh…
for these kind of passive speakers, can we actually just connect them to our current edifier?
or we still need an amp for them?
You probably could if you wire them all to the main speaker, but I imagine there would be a lot of interference and there'd be a lot of strain on the amp. It's probably best to get a dedicated amp.
Understood! thanks bruv!
What does passive speaker mean?
Not powered - no inbuilt amplifier. Won't have any ports or jacks, just negative and positive terminals to be connected to corresponding terminals on an amplifier.
