Just looked at a review…didn't realise it's only 4 aluminium boarder trimmings around the sides and aluminium top plate and the rest of the case is plastic. But for this price, can't complain.

Worth noting this isn't the hot swappable version

      Ohhhhh. Should write that thx

    • Does "hot-swappable" mean "replacable keys" in terms of mechanical keyboards? Or maybe just Keychron?

Btw both of these models are non-hot swappable meaning you are stuck with what you get :(

"hot-swappable" means, generally, that you can replace something without disconnecting the entire device. Not the same as "swappable".

      • Just double check. "Hot swappable" refers to changing the switches, right? I just wanna change the keycaps to something like HyperX pudding keycaps, do i need to get hot-swappable version?

Took some googling, but it seems you're right.

A bit confusing term. It seems the opposite of "hot-swappable" is "swappable using a soldering iron" which, to me, is as swappable as the processor in a 2022 laptop.

"hot-swappable" means replacing the switches easily through a 3 or 4 pin interface that clicks in and out.

Switches are the mechanism that report a "press" and have many characteristics such as force required for a press to be recognised, audible or force feedback, travel, amongst others.

Caps, or "keycaps" are always replaceable as the interface for your fingies (also have many types and angles to choose from).

I recently bought the K8 H3 and it came without the aluminum housing, it's all plastic, you need to put it on a mat for it not move around, it's hot swappable though. I never want to swap brown switches.

I bought the hot swap K10 with brown switches, absolutely hated the brown switches, the actuation force was too low and definitely not tactile enough for my liking. Ended up spending $120 for new switches.

IMO you either go full blue or stay red. A half a*** brown is great at nothing. I had Cherry MX Brown before and now using K8 Gateron Blue.

Nice, hotswap is the way. There are so many switch options now.

Gat Reds are were too light for me, Yellows were a sweet spot, then over time I moved to blacks.

        • I went with Boba U4T's, expensive, but well worth.

I love the K8 with browns. I had reds before but the actuation force was so low I was constantly making typos. The brown is the perfect level of tactile but quiet enough for the office.

      • Huh?

Reds and Browns have exactly the same actuation force (45g).

The only difference is Reds are linear travel versus Brown W/ tactile bump.

According to the Keychron site the Gateron Pro red is 45g and the brown is 55g.
I had both side by side and can tell you the red was definitely ligher.

          • @theguyrules: Ahhhh my bad forgot we were talking about Gaterons.

Cherry Red vs Brown is identical, not Gaterons.

    • I own K8H3 - it's all plastic, yet heavy. It has rubber feet and no issues with moving around on any smooth dry surface. It stays in place. Haven't tried it on ice though.

I also had a K6 in Reds, it was a little too much actuation force for me and there was no DEL key so I immediately got rid of it. My first ever mech Keb was K4V2 brown sw, still with me and it is replaced with K8 H3, time to time I miss the numpad :D Maybe I add a cheap wireless numpad for working on excel.

Brown is the sweetest spot for me, no offense to anyone :D
