    Seems to be QLD only

Where else but Queensland baby? 😎

    • That’s a shame.

    • My local store in TAS offers oil recycling as a service. Are you saying I won't be able to get the $5 credit here?

  • I bought some oil long ago but no longer need it as my vehicles have changed since. Probably a good way to get of it this way.

    • +4

      better yet, give it away
      .

      • Who would accept it ? Better recycle it !

        • +1

I have given away slightly used oil so fresh oil will be no hassle

The mechanic put the wrong thickness and I just replaced the oil myself.

          • @trev likes bargains: How did you know?

            • +2

@WhyAmICommenting: The engine sound had changed. It didnt take off as well when I put my foot dow. I checked the invoice and it had the wrong thickness. I put what's indicated on the log book and it ran fine.

              • @trev likes bargains: I would have asked for my money back! Good find though - not everyone would know to do that. Thanks for the tip :)

                • @WhyAmICommenting: He is my long term mechanic and was overseas when I tried to get hold of him.

He had good intentions as the milege was a bit high on the car. However what he didn't realise that almost all of it was highway and interstate KMs. So the mileage kept ticking but the engine was not worn out.

      Seems very wasteful :/

Paint your fence with the oil

      • Painting your suburban timber fence with used sump oil to help preserve it was a popular thing back in the day. Rarely see it now.

        • Is old diesel engine oil too contaminated to use it to paint the fence?
I used old petrol engine oil and was very good. It actually brought up a nice timber colour on the fence. It inly lasts about 6 months though.

  • is this new not the $5 but the recycling program?
    how good!!

    • +2

Always been available at 'selected stores'.

Used to pour into a big tank. Now needs to be in an oil container (cant put in an old milk bottle etc).

  • +1

Nice, now I have incentive to go and drop off that 20L of oil I've been meaning to dispose of…

    • +1

Just not in one container, because the biggest they'll take is 10L

      • They're in 3 containers already, so will have do it over a couple of visits.

        • Can take em all at once, just not in containers bigger than 10L

  • +1

How many can I bring in?

  • Oil recycling is now available at 142 Supercheap Auto stores Australia wide.

Really? I took some oil to my local store two weeks ago and they'd removed the oil recycling bin. It always used to be there but looks like they aren't interested in it anymore.

    • Yeh the oil bins are gone but you can still leave it in the store

Do they burn it to make electricity? Burning rubbish and claiming it's good for climate change is all the rage at the moment.

    • +2

I thought they sent to be processed and reused and anything that then can't be is burnt. I have no source for this though

    • It appears there are no participating stores in Victoria. My local used to but not anymore. I now take used sump oil to the local council recycling depot. They too have a 20 litre limit per drop off.

  • +1

Interesting, i have like 10 sealed bottles around the place can i claim it 10 times?

    • +1

Definitely not in one go. Apparently, the limit is once per account per month.
It could be that you are able to do it multiple times if you do multiple visits within a months, but most likely not unless you use different supercheap accounts.

  • Do they check if its oil.
Can i fill them with water lol

    • -1

Could use old cooking oil too

    • +5

or piss to save some on your water bill

      • +4

The real bargain is always in the comments

    • +1

Be careful what you fill them with. I filled mine with some Brisbane river "water" because I though it looks like used oil, but when I handed it in they said they only take toxic oil and this stuff was too toxic

      • I went in there once to rescue a ball or something. Cut my feet too, I’m glad I’m still alive. 😅

  • Thanks for the info OP!

  • +4

Make sure you put the oil in HDPE containers with solid lids, no milk bottles for example. Cleanway will not accept it. Old dishwashing or laundry liquids are good.

This is mainly to help people like myself who change oil from a 20L drum and don't have the new/old 5L/6L bottles as an in/out spare.

  • +4

Sent this to a friend with a Volkswagen who often buys a lot of oil and he said he doesn't need it "My car burns it off".

    Oh dear.

    • Lmao Das Auto

    • Works for my mower. Oils always looks 1/2 decent since it burns it

  • V good initiative!

  • I use to pour old oil on dead tree stumps to stop termites eating it was that a bad idea?

    • Try it on your father's cherry tree that you chopped down with a hatchet, and report back the results.

    • Vinegar will do the trick

      • Stop the termites?

  • -3

    Excellent.
Now I don't need to dump it in the garbage bin. 20L drums tend to make it pretty heavy.

  • This is good. I just bought some oil the other day to change in my ute, now I know where I'll take it for recycling. Thanks OP!

  • Do Sydney stores take old oil as well? Can't say I've ever noticed this at the stores I visit.

    • +1
      • Thanks, KaraZorEl.

    • My local store used to have a decent sized bin out front for it - about the size of a car bonnet - now there’s a regular household sized bin there.

  • Does anyone have a link to the promotion, I can’t find any reference to the $5 reward on the super cheap auto website.

  • The $5 is only valid for remainder of Feb?

  • such a shame QLD only,

I usually try to have spare original oil bottles, (by putting old oil in 2L soda bottles, i give to a council recycling center for no benefit)

  • We have a used oil heater that works well for heating the shop, just fill it up and let it rip. No bad emissions either.

    • How much did you pay?
