wd black sn850 is $9 more on amazon right now ;-)

      • +2

I know this may get taken the wrong way but, while the sn850 is a very fast drive, and you probably won't notice the difference between it and the 980 pro, the 980 pro is significantly faster lol. If the 980 pro is cheaper by any amount I don't see why going sn850 would be better

        • I belive you have to install the 980 into a computer to get the lastest update to get better speed? One major downside if this was true.

          • @linhlink: If you have SN850 and you are on AMD platform, it is best you also update the firmware.

        • +1

Requires firmware updates to even match the 850 black write speeds just FYI.

          • @onlinepred: If you have an AMD based system, it is best you update firmware for WD SN850 Black, especially if you have X570.

I seem to recall there are different batches for SN850 and newer batch was waiting for a firmware update a few months ago to address the same issue.

        • Source?

          • @abjsdhasehasee: Sources:
            Trust me bro
            Manufacturer rated speeds
            Google

            • @fAffY: im so confused rn, but either way every review i see has the sn850 slightly faster or equal.

              • @abjsdhasehasee: yeah… so just go with what's cheaper lmao

              • @abjsdhasehasee: It is easy to cherry pick results. For example, I am going to cherry pick some where 980 Pro is better:

                https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/a9gZejEHjq73QejEpjp3eg-970…
                https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/bADFygKQYSmTDfRs2bU3jg-970…

The reality is it depends. We know SN850 does well in random writes, but 980 Pro seems to do better in random reads. Generally, SN850 Black is considered a faster SSD. However, OZBers tend to buy Samsung SSDs when there is a cashback or some other promotion (even if it is a game voucher, you could technically sell that, though I think the current game promotion isn't as good - that game is not getting decent value).

Another factor could be your experience with Samsung SSDs and WD (or Sandisk Extreme) SSDs.

Then, there is SN770, a somewhat shrewd PCIe gen 4 SSD. If we can get a good price for that here eventually, it is going to be interesting.

    Would this work with PS5?

    • +1

Ye, but you probably want to get a heatsink to come with that, any heatsink around $20 should be fine.

    • Need to get the one with a heatsink for the ps5

    • Yes, but just FYI, you need a PC to update the firmware to get it to perform at PS5 speeds. You also need a heatsink

      • I had no idea ssd needs a firmware upgrade, I’ve bought three different ssd in the past installed it straight to my pc without fw update, could this mean I’m also not potentially getting full speeds

        • Yep even on old ones I've updated the firmware with decent gains.

          • @onlinepred: Damn I can’t remember the exact model of my ssd but they were not old they were Samsung, is there an app which I can download which will show me the exact model no. they are

            • @Believ3r: Samsung Magician V7.01 seems to be the latest Monitoring software

              • @Scotch: This software will tell you the model and do the firmware update too as well as any other settings or tweaks you might want to do, also does speed tests

        • when I got my 2tb verison I didn't do a firmware upgrade it still did a speed test at 6000mbps so… what does the firmware upgrade do?

    • yes you need a heat sink I use the 2TB version with my PS5 since last year works great

Can anyone confirm this won't work with a Ryzen 5600G CPU which I think is gen 3.0?

    • I've got this drive and Ryzen 5800G. It works, just at gen 3 speeds.

      • -1

So this will do the same job if I'm limited to Gen 3.0 speeds with the 5600G? I'm about to buy this one for a build ($175), is there any advantage in spending $44 extra for this Gen 4.0 drive?

980 is not recommended at the current price point if you do have some needs to copy large files. Things get more complicated with SSDs lately unfortunately:

          • 980 was originally intended to fight WD SN550, but then WD did that dodgy NAND swap trick on newer SN550.
          • 970 Evo Plus, a lot of reviews are based on the older batch. It did have impressive sustained write after SLC cache is exhausted but it had an older controller so the limited SLC cache means it didn't do so well in benchmark charts in today's standard.
          • The new batch of 970 Evo Plus basically switched the controller to a better one, raising the performance to the same level as 980 AND while the NAND write speed is a downgrade of the old batch, it is still much faster than 980.
          • WD released SN570, which is well, let's just say it is band-aid solution to that SN550 NAND downgrade mess, and an excuse to milk customers.

980, only get it if it is $150 or lower (I know, not going to happen soon). 970 Evo Plus (new batch) is probably the one to get if you must get one now. I guess you could always use "future proofing" as an excuse to trick your brain to buy 980 Pro.

  • Any deals on sub $100 1 TB deals or sub $200 2 TB deals ? looking for another storage drive.

You are looking at QLC SSDs if that's the case and you still need special discounts. The thing with QLC SSDs is that ideally you want to go for at least 2TB because due to the nature of QLC and multi-channel design, you really need 2TB to get somewhat decent performance, especially for sustained write (still subpar, but not crippled that badly).

      • just for storage even, 2 GBps is enough, planning to run on a dual NVMe to PCIe 4x card.
