          I don't think there are any electronics or key blank at all in there; my interpretation of the REP's answer to Foundit's question above alludes to that anyway. Fair point nonetheless! :)

      If you want a whole VW key (about $500-600 at the dealer) I've just gone through the process of getting a Skoda one from this seller on ebay tmc_car_keys

      Cost $185 by the time I had the blade cut and the key coded in at the dealer. Make sure to get a new, blank, uncut key. Must match part number.
