Belong $80 SIM Starter Pack for 5,000 Points Delivered @ Telstra Plus Rewards Store

560

A Telstra Plus 'Hot Offer' - normally 10k points.

This comes with $80 worth of credit, effectively $100 if you sign up with a referral code (see random generator) in the activation process.

$100 is enough for either 4 monthly cycles of the $25 plan (20GB/month) or a mix of eg 1 month at $25 (20GB) and then 5 months of $15 (3GB/month). Data rolls over so you can start on a $25 plan, downgrade to $15 and still keep the left over data for subsequent months. You have to activate on the $25 plan (as a minimum) to start off with, then you can move down to $15 (the $15 one isn't available for your first month).

I moved 2 members of the household over this way, effectively free phone service for 4 to 6 months depending on your data needs (don't value the 5k points as anything, hence the words 'effectively free'). Another advantage of Belong is that you can data gift (in my case, between plans) and you can either refer a household member as long as you use 2 different email addresses (you can even have them under the same name as long as the email addresses are different).

Don't forget to apply a referral code at checkout!

Edit: these $80 starter packs typically go for $40 (eBay) so a good way to spend your Telstra points from a resale POV as well.

Can activate up to 12mth after purchase, so time to stock up.

Have 20k pts per holiday booking- booked 1d at a time.

Picked up this SIM before for 2000pt free with 2500pts for being vaccinated

  • I currently do this but I have no more Telstra Plus points, so I actually suggested Aldi Mobile Family Plan to my parents. https://www.aldimobile.com.au/products/45-family-plan. Pretty good value for money if you ask me and they also use Telstra network. $45 for 2 sims and a shared pool of 40gb with data rollover just in case someone else doesn't have Telstra points to spare. 5k points isn't exactly trivial and you can't use money to make up the point difference with this so this is literally a Telstra customer exclusive.

  • Will this work in a Telstra phone?

    • No

    • depends but mostly no

    • Can a Telstra Locked Phone Be Used with Boost Mobile?

Read and you decide. Apparently, it is no if it is a Telstra branded phone (i.e. Essential Smart 2). Boost is okay it seems.

      • +1

This is belong not Boost! Many times a boost Sim will work on a Telstra locked phone but won't for Belong/Woolworths/Aldi I wouldn't bet on it working.

        • Go through that entire thread, it was mentioned Aldi and Belong are not the same as Boost.

  • Can we get referral with different email addresses if we already a Belong customer?

    • +1

      edit: what watchnerd said

    • +4

Best to activate a 2nd sim in a family members name, email & different address so you can't be accused of breaching the Acceptable use policy.

    • +2

Officially, no. Unofficially, I am not responsible for your actions.
Anyway, I actually got more referrals from OZB random referrals than from mates and relatives. Belong plans are not as cost effective as they used to be. The $10 plan is gone for example (I don't think you can change to that $10 plan after activation anymore).

      • The lowest plan is now $15/month (but only from the month after activation).

  • +1

Thank you for the referral process advice :)

  • +5

Bring back the 2,000 points deal, and then I’m ready to stock up again.

  • Bring back the 2000 points offer, I loaded up heaps last time, well worth it.

Do a referral code work upon activation? What perks are available?

    • +1

Yes, OZB random referral code for Belong (if you need one):

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/api/referral/35

$20 for both parties. Put it in during activation. Make sure you also add your code to your OZB profile once you have it.

      • Wow, didn't know that, will do it from now on.

    • Sure do, both parties get $20 added to their credit.

      • That's an amazing deal. I think Belong is banking on a percentage of people being lazy and stick around after the credit runs out.

    • +1

The $20 referral can only be applied from next month, no longer works from activation time.

Maybe check RECENT reviews first from user experiences with belong mobile.
    https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/belong-mobile

I had been with them for over 3 years and recently changed (good decision!) as i had major problems (last 3 months) with patchy internet data and I live in metropolitan area with good reception. Reception isn't the issue but internet is very unstable and it seems that other users are having the same experience too. Could barely even stream youtube clips at 144p resolution. My sister is on telstra 4g and internet had no issues and I tried my sim in different phones with the same problem.

I got so fed up with waiting for them to fix this issue and couldn't even use my data. Customer service will keep telling you its your phone that's an issue too and run you around in circles giving you useless troubleshooting ideas. Personally I would wait until there are improved reports with mobile data issues.

    • +2

I've had no issues with belong over the last few years. Currently out perform Optus 4g broadband deal I signed up recently (which is dropping when streaming in the evening)
      So I would say YMMV.
Big fan of belong, have 2 numbers on grandfathered $10 plan, handy for data sharing.

      • +1

I also have issue with Belong from time to time and it is also a reliability issue. The download speed varies a lot and at times can be really awful.

    • +1

had had the same problems, i thought i was just me.

    • +2

Yep I had the same issue as well. Went to Tassie for a few days, pretty much had no reception there. It's cheap but wouldn't recommend it unless you only live in the major cities.

      • +1

Hot damn. Going there soon: I guess Telstra’s the safest option? Bizarre, you would think belong would be fine being on the same network practically

        • +2

Can confirm Voda and Telstra work fine.

We were 30 minutes out of Hobart most of the time, also went to those typical tourist locations. However I couldn't even get reception in the center of Hobart.

          • +1

@Banana: Oft that’s bad. Weighing up a month of Felix (Voda) or Telstra prepaid

    • Thanks for sharing your experiences all. To be fair, I had a really good run with Belong for the first 3+ years which is great but it was only recently i've been getting problems and sadly they weren't able to fix it for me or my wife so I had to move.

Am trying out Boost now because of Telstra network. Maybe i'll get the same issues who knows? but so far it's been better and less patchier - fingers crossed!

  • My Telstra JB hi-fi deal is nearly 1 year old.

If I port to this does it count as leaving Telstra, so I can grab another JB deal?

    • nope. you better port out to someone else not under Telstra umbrella

  • can i use it as credit for my existing belong plan?

    • No.

    • You could for data purposes if you let someone else in your household activate under their name and then gift you their data. It won't extend your plan as such, you'd have to keep an existing plan open (eg be on the $15/month or grandfathered $10/month plan to receive the data gift).

  • Do Tesltra points expire?

    Mine says anniversary April 2022?

    • That's for your status/tier (eg 'silver'). I don't think points expire as long as you have a Telstra service.

      • My JB hifi telstra plan is nearly finished. If I want to wait to spend my points on something else and port elsewhere (kogan etc) will my points expire ?

  • I got 3 Belong $80 starter packs last time for 2000 points each.
Data sharing is good as I have moved data between services.
No voice mail is a bummer.
Agree with some other posters about patchy service, but mostly it's ok. Some areas I get over 100mb download, occasionally download speeds crashed.

  • currently on belong.

wondering whats everyone hack to churn this sim (keep on stacking / data banking)

    • +3

Transfer data to your family members Belong sim then port out for a month or longer.
Port back under a different email in order to get referral credits & transfer data back.

      • Interesting, i could not find anything on belong website about waiting a month or longer.

wonder if its like those automatic IT system that detect if you were a previous customer in the last 30 days.

also wonder if you could bypass it by porting to a cheap kogan / voda /optus and port back a week later.

So I definitely would have to use a new/different email address when porting back in just to get referral credit :(
        bugger.

  • I have 1500 points? How to earn 3500 for free?

  • Do you have to be a Telstra Plus member to order the Belong $80 SIM Starter Pack?

  • im on the plan from the last deal atm. can i port out once its expired then port back in again?

    • +1

Belong sims don't expire so you need to port out before the next payment date.
I think you need to be away for a month to be considered a new customer.

      • great. seems like i can put those student kogan starter packs to use

  • I have around 20k points that I doubt I'll use and my 12 month BYO telstra plan is set to finish next month. Can I just burn all my points on these Belong packs and have 'free' mobile for the next 8 months?

    • +1

These are not recharge packs but starter ones. Not sure if Telstra allows you to purchase 8 in one go. Theoretically, you can have 4 to 6 months worth of calls and data per pack, so if you’re willing to change numbers all the time, you could be sweet for 3 years.

      • +1

you could jump between Kogan and Belong, Kogan always offers cheap 1 month plan, I recently grabbed 2 x 1c from them

        • +1

Also, the expiry of the packs could be 12 months from your date of purchase. Perhaps get 2 (not 8) and get a cheap in between sim like Kogan for 30 days?

          • @bozbargain: Sweet sounds like a plan. What will happen to the remainder of my points, will they expire?

            • +1

@Pub Envelope: No, they don't. I can still use my 12000 points after I ported back my number 6 months later. That was May 2021, I am not sure if they changed it.

      • I was able to buy 5x packs with no issue back when they were 2000 points each I didn't try to buy more than that though. From memory I had to buy them 1 at a time though.

        • I bought 13.

  • I'm going to activate one either Friday or next Monday depending on how much data I use this week and as I've had issues using the random generator in the past (no longer connected) whoever sends me their info (referral code) first will get the $20.
BTW did anyone know how it works for the referee these days ie will I get the $20 discount on the second month or is it only applied when I use up the $80 and need to recharge? Cheers!

    • When I activated mine a few days ago, I got the referral credit a few days later (so it adds to whatever credit you already had, eg $80 for the sim - $25 for the first month and then + $20 for the referral credit = $75 balance).

  • Someone mentioned to me the random generator gives out codes that don't work. The offer is definitely still live ($20 referral credit), keep trying until you get a valid one.

    BREAKING
Just noticed this while checking my balance in the app:

Important $10 mobile plan update: We are removing the $10 plan and moving customers to our $15 plan from April 2022. Customers will receive an email ahead of the change.

Can they really do this from a contract point of view??

    • holy crap. thanks for this. i didn't realise till i saw this and went to check. mine says the same too.

      • I'm devastated, I've banked 200gb+ of data, so stuck with them for a while. Keen to move to Woolies long life plan.

        • I've got similar over 2 accounts. Will definitely be looking to move on now.

          • @squarepants: Same,
I've got secondary service with banked data, no referral credit, so stuck
Main service, few referral credits, so stuck too ^^

    • +1

That's bad news for those on these grandfathered plans. You're not on a contract with Belong though, it's pay as you go so they can retire any plan they want, just like how Netflix can up their prices.

      • technically, aren't all of those grandfathered Telstra plans PAYG as well? they definitely aren't on a contract any longer as the contracts would have run out by now. seems like bad form from Belong.

        • They're still postpaid contracts officially (Telstra) vs prepaid (Belong). Also, Telstra recently wiped out all their grandfathered internet plans, I think mobile could follow next.
