Great price for a high quality LGA1200 motherboard for intel 10th and 11th gen CPUs.

Yes LGA1200 is a dead platform, but still quite good value for budget builds. (Pair with $269 delivered Core i5-11400 from Amazon which comes with iGPU in case if you don't need a dGPU or just to tie over until dGPUs are more reasonably priced, and $75 DDR4 2x8GB 3200MHz RAM from UMart if you have Afterpay)

The Mortar is basically a micro ATX implementation of the Tomahawk.

For those wanting WiFi as well, I recommend getting the Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 M.2 module add-on from UMart if you have Afterpay: https://www.umart.com.au/product/intel-wi-fi-6-ax200-m-2-223… (comes down to $19 delivered after the "AFTERPAY20" discount code.

  • what case? what hdd? i not current with build specs but want a cheap PC. thinking about buying them components and assebly them my self

    • Deepcool Mattrexx 40 for $59. If you want better, Fractal Design G Focus mini $89. HDD can be Barracuda 2TB $68 but for the boot drive you may wanna get M.2 SSD. Kingston KC2500 500GB $70 is pretty good.

      • I wouldn't need any fans right?

        • i think psu gold recommend too. 550w?

          • +2

@ilove: A high quality PSU (105 Celsius capacitors, silent mode fan, high quality fan bearings, 10 year warranty) can easily last 20+ years, so you're better off going for a good 750w+ one. It's the only PC component that makes sense to future proof.

        • cpu comes with a fan, as do cases …..

          • @garage sale: Not all CPUs do and even the ones that do may need some extra help with a better cooler if your case has bad airflow.
with cases usually it's just one rear fan unless going for a better quality case that includes them.

    • I'm a big fan of the Deepcube Macool 110 for $79, which i suppose is the slightly more premium version of the Mattrexx (same dimensions and layout). The glass panel is magnetic which makes it extremely easy to remove and adjust the internals during building, and comes with one more USB 3.0. Also, comes in white if that's your thing.

If you don't need storage hold off on the HDD, prices always decreasing.

Boot drive agree with KC2500 is very very good value and a good performer too.

  • Got the Asus Tuf Gaming B560M-plus wifi from this store last week for $139. How is it compared to this?

    • If looking just at VRM performance alone, the MSI Mortar performs better, but both are decent boards. So I think both are fine as long as the board's features met your need.

    • This one has a worse VRM architecture than the Asus TUF (N channel vs DrMOS). Performance wise it is somewhat more capable (it has better thermals) but also somewhat less power efficient than the TUF.

Ignoring the wifi the single most important feature difference is that the Mortar can run a 10th gen CPU and NOT disable the first M2 slot. I think this a feature for MSI B560M boards in general though, not just this board in particular, but still nice to have.

      • price difference between 10 and 11 gen cpu and availability leans towards 11th gen ….if people need more graphics performance 11500 has different gpu …….

keep wondering when 12 th gen stocks will become affordable …. but boards and cpu seem expensive still ….
