Buying a round for his redshirt mates

        • -1

Before making a sneery comment behind their backs…

  • Did this 5 years ago. Pretty easy.

    • +2

isn't that the length of a rsa/rcg certificate.. 5 years lol haha?

It was when I did it which was a one day course at a rsl with some guy just telling us the answers and his lifestory and examples of how not to piss off customers lol haha funny guy now that I think about it.. they used some random function room to do the like 4 or 8 hour course.. i can't remember now was over 5 years ago that is for sure maybe 2013?

      • +1

Aye same here lol. My guy told us stories about how he was a butler for some rich people and they bought him a lambo.

        • +1

Fast Eddie?? I think I had the exact same guy

      • Same here…The guy spent the entire course telling stories about RSL customers that were plastered and the rest of the time trying to chat up the young girls. He was around 60 years old and the girls were in their 20's…..Captain Creepy the whole day.

        • +1

My guy told us if big brickies labourer mike after doing a hard 12 hours of bubbling about on a long hard construction site comes into your establishment and looks like he has had one too many but still really wants another drink but looks like he has had too many what do you do.. I forgot the answer but I think the gist basically was to kind of learn when to say no.. I can't tell sometimes so I didn't go the route of the drink dispenser role.

I'm not getting my head caved in because I told the wrong guy no more.

  • Is this valid in Vic?

    • These courses are for NSW residents only, but the cert would be valid country wide.

      • +1

        valid country wide.

        Does that include WA ?

    • +1

      No.

I have a nsw and vic one separately

With so many liquor deals lately on OzB, I need to sign this one up to responsibly serve myself :).

  • Good idea!

  • if you want cash on the side, there's an incredible shortage of staff in the hospitality sector…

    • +13

      shit job but

      • +5

Yeah there's a reason nobody with a choice wants to work bad hours for low pay, dealing with rude customers.

        • +3

Exactly, hospitality industry needs a huge overhaul.

        • +1

It's like the largest players abuse their staff as SOP or something.

Well that was 20 years ago, I cannot imagine how awful "hospitality" is now to work in …

        • +6

Say what you will, I miss my carefree hospitality days. Once the day was done, that's it. Didn't have to bring it home or stress about it. And then we partied hard

        • work bad hours for low pay,

Atm what I've been seeing is very decent hours for very decent pay because of the shortage, but usually yes.

          dealing with rude customers.

Sure you'll get some rudeness anywhere but hospitality in an upmarket restaurant vs a bar/pub is night and day.

Well aware its a shit job, but i am willing to bet 9/10 people here go out for a drink with their friends. I find it super ironic that the same people that complain about hospitality being a shit job, are the one having a great time out with their mates while there's someone doing that 'shit job' to make that happen i.e. drinks don't serve themselves and tables aren't cleaned up magically on their own.

If everybody wants to get on their high horse and be 'tech billionaire' wannabes that don't want to do the 'shit job', then you'd have no place to go for a drink with your friends.

I say this as a person that worked in bars/pubs hospitality, underpaid, for 7 years. I currently have a cruisy WFH office job making a lot but I will always look back at those days as a valuable lesson and a part of my life. It's a good learning experience, particularly if you're in your late teens early 20's.

          Well said.
Perhaps it would be beneficial if everyone undertakes some form of customer services work (hospitality, retail, etc) for a couple of months. It would solve the problem of labour shortages in those industries and at the same time create some empathy when those people move on to being customers themselves.
I always find we get much better service, and have a much better experience, if we engage with and are friendly with those working in those roles.

        • I shit in my toilet. I'd still call sewage plumbing a shit job.

        • Bar work…Yes a fantastic career start in your twenties as you develop skills in communications. Just stay away from being a chef. Split shifts, weekends, public holidays and no penalty rates if you are on a wage. Rostered and paid for 38 hours per week though you must work a minimum of 45 hours. Some chefs work up to 60 hours a week and paid for only 38. They call this scam reasonable overtime. Many left the trade during COVID and never came back. Thats why some restaurants never fully reopened, along with the import slave labour on $22 per hour. I used to work as a Chef but gave it away many years ago, but still have many friends that are trapped in the industry. Some of them love it, though none of them at 40 years of age own a property or any assets on a wage sub 60K per year for 50 hour weeks for 38 hours pay.

incredible shortage of staff in the hospitality sector…

Wonder why it correlates with low international student and back packer numbers.

      • +2

a lack of people industry can treat badly and pay below award rates.

ye nah, im sure thats not the problem /s

    • i tried for several months to get a job in hospitality. majority seem to want people with existing hospo experience. very few don't require experience but oddly, they don't provide much info about the job either. only two actually called me to discuss my skills/experience before knocking me back anyway. just gives me the impression they only want cheap workers who are naive about their rights.

  • +3

Hopefully only people that may actually use this sign up…

    • -2

Oh no, getting a more educated/qualified population instead of throwing billions at mates!! The horror!

  • +5

Not very clear how to actually enrol in the free course. They list providers but it takes you to the provider's website. Am I missing something?

  • I think the website is crashing for searching nearby locations.

  • Any providers who do this online?

  • +1

Can we do this if we're in other states? Like online delivery?

  • Yeah this seems to have been ozbargained rather hard.

  • Just paid for my renewal ergh.

    • damn how much was it

      • $41

        • I think anyone that had to renew an RSS that expires between 1 Feb and Jun 30 gets it free.

  • -1

Usually, pubs & clubs require an rcg as well?

    • yes any venue with gaming machines aka pokies and gambling areas.. otherwise rsa is ok for just alcohol only venues with no gambling at all on the premises.. afaik

      • yes any venue with gaming machines aka pokies and gambling areas..

You only need RCG if you work in the gaming room. Some venues may require it so that they can roster staff across roles, but this is not a legal requirement (I have a friend working in a venue with gaming who only has RSA, and she just works at the main bar)

  • Before there were NFTs there was RSAs.
