Wetstone Grinder 150W $199 + Shipping @ ALDI (Online)

200

Traditionally used to sharpen woodworking chisels.

It appears to be the same little Scheppach machine that Hare & Forbes sells for $220 plus delivery.

Unlike a grinder, which will overheat the tiny edge of a chisel and soften the steel, the water bath keeps the wheel, and edge of the chisel, cool.

If you are patient, could also sharpen blunt HSS lathe tools, engineer's scribes, drill bits et c. Only has a little 150W motor though, so if your chisel has chips out of it from hitting too many nails, you will need to be very patient with this. (probably no good for metalworking cold chisels :-)

Has anybody here tried Wetstone Grindr ?

    • +3

      Betrayed by autocorrect
      XD

    • No, but I have some critical feedback from a two people on the metalwork forum:

"They are low speed and friction drive, literally the smooth and bare motor shaft (6-8mm) driving a rubber or plastic disk on a through shaft with the wheel and lap mounted. My older one uses plain bushes for the output shaft that allow a fair degree of end play. also the lap is a plastic moulding and the mount is not centered correctly in mine so a degree of runout there, difficult to lap an edge and follow the wheels path twice every second while maintaining accuracy."

      and

slow speed (120 RPM!) so will be next to useless on anything that needs more than a light hone.
We had one at the mens shed and a few member tried to sharpen drill bits and chisels with it.
Those that pushed too hard to get some grinding action stalled the thing or gouged the stone.
Other more gentle souls nearly died of boredom waiting for something to happened.

We had a number of Sheppach machines at the mens shed and although some members were quite hard on them I thought they were "ordinary" at best.

Unfortunately, ALDI delivery service is currently unavailable in your area

MOD, can you please update title to include "Exclude WA"? Thanks

Found a video of it in action, it's not in English, but it shows you how all the bits and pieces work.

The seller does not refer it as a "wetstone" grinder, but as a wet grinder.

A whetstone is something used for whetting things. Whetting means to sharpen.

This is a wet grinder. That is, it uses a spray of water to keep the item being ground and the grinding wheel cool.

So it is both a whetstone and a wet grinder, but not a wetstone grinder.

    • Agreed.

It's actually a bit of a 'marketing gimmick' being utilised here. Whetstone's are for sharpening of delicate blades/knives.
It shouldn't be titled as "wetstone" (conveniently dropping the "h").

This is definitely a "wet grinder" only, and has far more limited use than what is implied.

For instance I'd never sharpen the Global's on it!

    • Potato, pohtayto?

Turn it on, and if there is water in the bath, the water's meniscus gets the stone to stay wet. Wet stone or Wetstone !
      :-)

Whetstone? A fine finishing stone? Hmmm. What grit size determines that. 200? 500? 2000?

Now a Wheatstone bridge, that is a precise term.

Something worth keeping in mind will be H&F Easter sale if you miss out on the Aldi deal.

  • not being able to buy from an online store and have it ship to WA is (profanity) barbaric.

    Screw Aldi.

  • No delivery to regional Victoria either

Aldi not even bothering to rebrand now?

  • This is a copy of a TORMEK. Not sure how good, but about 1/4 the price. There are plenty of Vids on Youtube to show the versatility of the TORMEK system. I believe many of the tool holder jigs are interchangeable, but DYOR if you have need for a particular application.
I have TORMEK T4 system (bought many years ago at about half of the current price) and would recommend it, if you can justify the initial outlay. I have not used the T4 on my Wusthof Classic Knives, but will probably do so eventually. It really is a good system if you take your time.
