Google Pixel 6 128GB $840 + 3200 Telstra Plus Points @ Telstra

810

I was looking at this deal : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/681885, but I didn't want to sign up with Telstra, so I went to the old deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/662734, which is a repost of another deal.

Works out to $840 + 3200 points. I just ordered and it went through. So, yes, it works better if you have Telstra points. I had mine saved.

Edit: FAQs:

  • Why use this deal?
I think the other deal requires you to sign up to a Telstra Plan. This one is simple. You use your Telstra Rewards points and checkout. You can create a Telstra ID for free, and checkout from the deal link. No Credit Checks as well.

  • Is the Phone Unlocked?
Yes. I've used this in the past and Telstra always sends unlocked phones.

  • Is there a way to get more points?
No free way exists AFAIK. There was the Telstra COVID bonus and some birthday bonuses. No more.

    • Nest Audio earlier this morning was 10,000 points + $24. Wonder why they changed it.

      • +1

you sure that wasn't nest mini

        • I take it back - it's 20,000 plus $22 and still there…

          • @fredblogs: I get what you mean you're adding more points to bring down how much you pay

        • +1

Uh ffs I could have paid by the useless points

  • Say I sign up to Telstra Plus (free) and buy this phone outright, will it be networked unlocked i.e. able to use my Kogan SIM with it?

    • +1

I don't believe the phones are network locked.

    • +4

Yes it will be network unlocked. (In fact none of the latest phones these days are network locked)

  • +1

I still have Telstra points even though I don't have a plan with Telstra anymore. There are some good deals here,
"$300 Pre-Paid SIM Starter Kit" for $210+ 25,000 points, even cheaper if you have more points 30,000 points + $196.
I forgot all about these points, I'll have to do some window shopping!!

  • I don't neeeeeeed a new phone… But for 100 more, would you go Oppo x3 pro or pixel?

    • +3

There are a lot of bugs on the pixel 6 and pixel 6 pro that haven't been fixed yet (there are a ton of articles an YouTube videos on this if you google it). Not sure whether the Oppo has any issues, but I wouldn't buy a pixel 6 as it stands.

      • +10

        how about if it sits?

        • +9

Let me contact the google team and if they've tried sitting.

    • +3

I keep two phones an Android and an iPhone and after using Pixel 6 for a month or so, I have sold it off and moved on. The fingerprint sensor is the worse authentication i have ever come across on a phone, random bugs all over like bluetooth/wifi disconnecting, the phone heats up even doing normal tasks. That said the picture quality is better than my iPhone 13 Pro Max but not by much. The picture taking experience on the iPhone however is much better - be it shutter lag or what you see on the screen.

    • pixel. for all the talk about the bugs, my pixel 6 pro has been absolutely solid.

That includes the fingerprint reader which is still weaker than past pixel phones but software updates have made it 'acceptable'

  • +8

PSA - The connectivity bug is still not fixed on my Pixel 6. The January update that was supposed to fix it didn't completely resolve it. It is better… But it's still there. I'm maybe getting 1-3 instances a day of completely loosing the network when I've got good service, instead of 3-6. At work, where I need to make time critical calls, I can't afford to wait 2,3 or 4 minutes for it reconnect to the network. So I've switched to another phone. My last Pixel after the Nexus 4, 5, 6P, Pixel, Pixel 3, Pixel 4A… I'm out. Done

    • +4

It's crazy that there are still issues. But they do seem to be with a small minority now. Either way, I'm waiting to see what deals come out of the Samsung S22 series release tonight.

    • +5

So its a great phone unless you need it to be a …phone

      • +1

Correct! Absolutely boggles my mind that it went to market with such a fundamental bug. Then they took from late Nov til mid Jan to release a "fix". And it still didn't completely fix it.

        • Not excusing the bug because it sounds very inconvenient but can't you just turn flight mode on and off from the notification shade to reconnect?

          • +3

@dazweeja: Well for that you need to know that the phone has lost connection. Do you keep looking at your phone all the time?

            • @dealsucker: I do when I'm making a call. Waiting for it to reconnect in order to make a call the specific issue that they mentioned.

At work, where I need to make time critical calls, I can't afford to wait 2,3 or 4 minutes for it reconnect to the network

              • @dazweeja: Well what about important/urgent calls that you may miss because your phone is such terrible at being a phone?

            • @dealsucker: If they are my wife…yes.

    • Would just like to chip in with my 2cents in that I've had 0 issues on the Boost network, they've also released a February update which includes some fixes for those experiencing the said issues.

    • i've never noticed anything wrong with my pixel, granted i'm not a power user. the only moments i've lost connectivity have been sitting in a camry, which i attributed to the car and location (same spot both times)

    • +1

Yep, still not fixed and made even worse after Feb update!

      https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/8/22923777/pixel-6-pro-febru…

the latest nasty bug causes Wi-Fi to randomly be switched off on Google’s flagship phones. Other owners are seeing a bizarre and frustrating link between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; when one is enabled, the other turns off and vice versa

    • I've had no issues losing network with my Pixel 6, in fact it's had the best connectivity (phone, wifi and bluetooth) of any phone I've ever had. But it's really luck of the draw with these things - unless an issue it's absolutely endemic, most users won't have a problem. I also got a Sony 9000H TV last year, and I've got to soft reset that thing like three times a week to stop the wi-fi turning itself off repeatedly - one of those widespread issues I did end up on the wrong side of. If anyone knows a long term solution for that one, I'm all ears!

    • +2

I was experiencing the same issue and isolated it to the phone switching between cellular and WiFi calling. Ever since I turned off WiFi calling I've not had a single dropped call.

Obv not ideal as WiFi calling is nice to have, but hasn't affected me since.

I just received the Feb update and have not re-tested WiFi calling as I really can't be bothered dealing with the potential hassle of dropped calls.

    • +1

Additionally, the february update broke wifi and bluetooth for a lot of people. These updates have pretty much been a shit show across the board. I expected better from Google.

    • It's really odd. I wonder if it's hardware qc related. Mine has been literally one of the most bug free phones I've ever owned. But friends I know have the same issues as you. I've been using Telstra and Optus

      • Yeah, it's hard to understand. I've also read that the last update fixed the issues for a lot of people in the bigger overseas markets. So I've also wondered whether it's related to how the phone interacts with different carriers. Which band you're typically on. Wi-fi/Bluetooth usage. So many factors. It seems to manifest differently for different people in different environments. Or not at all. And Australia being a small market, have we had less resources directed our way to resolve it?

It's not good enough anyway. And I know other companies have launched with serious problems. Samsung had exploding phones not long ago. Apple had Bendgate and Antennagate. But Pixel 6 went out to people 106 days ago… And the might of Google should've fixed this problem with a fundamental phone function for everyone by now. Or be refunding or exchanging. I had an email from Google telling me to update my Pixel stand ffs… But nothing about the phone that sometimes doesn't want to be a phone!!?

  • is there any way to get telstra points?

  • Is it really a big difference if it's $849 (like in the other deal) or $840 + 3200 points (here)?

    • gotta sign up to a mobile plan as well in the other deal

      • +2

Thought you just need a Telstra ID?

      • Gotcha, that makes sense!

  • Is this a Telstra branded pixel or clean vanilla google device?

So updates are directly from Google? (not Telstra)

    • I got it in the previous similar deal, and it's a clean vanilla device, no telstra branding or anything. However the updates are vetted by Telstra for varying amounts of time. The Android 12 update on the Pixel 5 for instance took months to be "released", and I noticed the last big update on the pixel 6 took longer as well. People swap out sims to get around it. I've found the battery life of the P6 to be absolutely dismal, but if you're at a desk and can rest it on a wireless charger you'd be fine.

      • Thank you, so this is if you use a Telstra sim basically? I'm with another telco

        Also worried abt battery life!

        • +1

Yes only with the Telstra sim.

After a standard day at work (I'm a courier) I'm usually around 15% battery left. Basically if I want to do anything after work, grab a beer, go to dinner, or if it's quiet and I'm using my phone more for time killing, I have to think about how I'll charge it during the day. I carry a charger and cable and hope I get some spare time. Not really good enough for a "flagship" phone in my opinion. Particulary when you contrast it with iphones. I'm told the pro is better (it would want to be)

          • @danwylie: Solid feedback here!

            • +2

@jabbairc: Updates have nothing to do with what sim is inserted. Google release their updates in waves globally. Generally the 5th of every month the newest update or security patch will be available for pixels. Telstra do not hold back or ‘vet’ updates as mentioned above.

  • +1

what is a way to get more points?

    • Sign up to more Telstra services. Basically, spend more.

  • Love the pixel 6 pro that I have, and pulled the trigger on pixel 6 at this price for my younger son.
Hopefully it is not much worse than the Pro.

    • I've got the 6. I haven't used the Pro so can't compare directly, but I like the 6 a lot. It's a bit smaller so easier to hold, great photos, decent battery life, everything 'just works' (for me anyway). Good value for the price.

  • Is the anyway to get unlimited photo storage?

    • Don't think so anymore, they are pushing Google One subs

    • Pixel 5 was the last

  • I've got the 6 pro and whilst I love the phone the battery really sucks. Mobile network standby is draining my phone approximately 10% per hour and I've already had it replaced once. Hoping a future update fixes this soon.

    • I am using 6 Pro too, with Optus network, and don't face the battery isue. Lasts roughly 1.5 days on a single charge with usage at par with my iPhone 12 Pro Max that also lasts more or less similar. Check if any of your Apps is the cause of battery drain.

      • It's definitely mobile network standby draining it you can go to battery usage and it breaks it down for you. Heaps of people have the same issue if you google it.

    • +1

Hoping a future update fixes this soon.

Google seem to spending more time on updating their gender pronouns than actual Engineering…

  • How much is a Telstra point worth?

  • Just bought pixel stand 2nd gen . $99

  • +3

So it seems the phone may have the following issues:
    Over heating
    Network drop out
    Bad fingerprint reader
    Battery drainage
    Screen refresh rate drops
    Camera app slowing
    Lock screen and brightness bug
But not every phone is having these issues.

    $840 Russian Roulette

    • +1

It's disgusting that a flagship phone with that RRP has that many issues

    • +1

Seems like most of the issues are fixable in software, except the fingerprint reader. Wonder why Google didn't go with the superior ultrasonic sensor (like Samsung) instead of an optical sensor.

    • +1

Ya, it's a really bad phone.
