Here for the Tintin at the Congo book comments

Billions of bilious blue blistering barnacles! Reminded me of the good old Loch Lomond whisky days! Hic!!

    • +6

      Ten thousand thundering typhoons!

  • are these hardback or paperback books?

    • i think the large ones in the orange box are paper, and theres a smaller format red one that's hard. Maybe theres a version of large hardbacks out there too, but I havent seen it around/on sale much?

edit* eg the Amazon link in below comments is the hardback version

      • I got two large tintin books that are hard covered. Are these ones the original ones that were sold separately?

    • +1

      It's the larger, ~30cm tall paperbacks: https://i.imgur.com/C8gBGf3.jpg
IMO these are the best version, the hardbacks are smaller with really small text.

Those who can't afford can always download most of these books for free from online and upload them on google books.
Love reading them on my fold 3.

    • What format would you recommend downloading? Kindle and EPUB both don't appear to be available.

      • Scratch that, I just couldn't download them in bulk - working fine individually :) Cheers!

        • Pdf worked fine, downloaded the bundle

          • @hopper: How did you download the pdf bundle? Which option ?

            • @belbo: Pdf bundle.

              • @hopper: Cool. Thanks! Just noticed - you click on the "31 Files" box.

  • Are the compact editions on https://www.amazon.com.au/Tintin-Collection-Compact-Editions… equivalent? If so, they are cheaper there…

    • The compact edition text is tiny. But otherwise yes, equivalent.

    • +1

I wouldn't get the compact editions. I bought them, they're too small to read easily. They were never written to be published in that print format, stick with the full-sized edition.

  • Thomson and Thompson were evidently not related.

    • Really! Source?
They were always introduced as twins.

      • Nope, thats an 80's band. The clue is in the spelling because they are always introduced as Thomson & Thompson

        • +1

I always assumed those were their first names. Interestingly, do you know which one is Thomson?

The only way to distinguish between them is by the trim of their moustaches. Thompson's is neatly trimmed, whilst Thomson's has a distinctive twirl at the ends.

          • @upended: I cant say, ive never met them. But you could also be right with your first name hypothesis.

            • @shroomish: Dupont and Dupond are the French names. Not given names in French-speaking parts of the world. I don't believe I have ever heard of Thomson or Thompson as given names. They are patronymics (son of Thom(as) in both cases) and, as I understand it, always form family names.

    • +2

"Thompson, with a 'P', as in psychology."

"Thomson, without a 'P', as in Venezuela."

  • +1

    The Tintin tshirts are terrific.

  • +2

Good value, those large thin comics are deceptively expensive.

  • +4

For those who don't need actual books (save the planet), digital copies are available for free at the Archive - https://archive.org/details/01TintinInTheLandOfTheSoviets/01…

    • Books are almost completely renewable and are made of a carbon sink.

  • +1

    Rin?

  • Good old days!

  • Captain Haddock is my favourite character. I love how he gets troubled by small things.

  • +4

you can own all 23 stories in The Adventures of Tintin

    but then

    Only missing Tintin in Congo

Doesn't do what it says on the Tin.

  • Tintin in Thailand is also missing…

  • Wondering if we can get this in store?

    • +2

yes i saw it instore in epping

  • Pity Amazon AU doesnt pricematch … Dont see the need to get Costco membership

  • So the whole set are in black and white?

    • +1

      snowy is!

  • +1

I bought the tin tin in the congo book cover poster from ebay. There’s a seller on there that has some others listed, I asked if they can do Tin tin in the congo and they did.

  • I've been buying these over the years in hardbacks for about $16 to $20 new, so it works out at about $400 for the set in hardback. This is a good deal in soft cover, and the larger format is the only way to go.

  • Classics!

  • +5

Wish they had the Asterix series this cheap

  • +1

I loved tintin and asterix growing up and would like to share it with my kids, but thoughts on how these books hold up for the current generation? Would a 6-7 year old be able to grow into them with time?

    • +2

I don't see why not, they're just fun adventures.

    • Even if just for the art it's worth it. I grew up drawing pictures of the covers with textas, and there's nothing too inappropriate for kids (anything that is, (like opium) will go over their heads!)

  • whats the Best way to collect these books from a collectors point of view if i just want one of each book ?
