Just checking ozbargain in the Aldi carpark before I go in to shop.

    Cheers.

    • I timed posting it well then.

      • Don’t you already have enough ice-cream?

Rude! And to answer your question, yes but I need more.

I’m buying a 2nd hand fridge this week to put in my garage so I can buy more ice cream and also bring the 6x Monarc Indulge Gourmet Ice Cream 1L tubs I have stored over at mum’s place back to where they belong (in my freezer).

10 points to Aldi's sourcing team for getting top stuff at affordable range.

Tell me another multi location store where you can buy icecream, an acoustic guitar, legit french champagne and a pair of fake vice grips located in store within 10 metres of each other and for less than $100 total.

      • You go in to save money buy actually buy all the unwanted stuff because of the savings. That's Aldi for you LOL.

Coincidentally I’m pushing out some chocolate soft-serve as I read through the comments…

@tharlow: I'm guessing you don't work at an ice-cream shop?

            • @MS Paint: No… not any more. Got fired for spending too much time on OzBargain. But I reminisce over the good times by letting the occasional one rip… hands free

          • @tharlow: cue the scene from "me, myself and irene" :-D

What's the honest consensus on these vs real magnums? I'm quite partial to a classic or an almond magnum, and my wife likes the ego caramel, so any particular thoughts on these would be appreciated.

    • +2

I want to know the answer too, but I always find Aldi versions of sweet products are heavier on either the fat or sugar (whichever is cheapest to add, saving money on production) compared with the original, making them easy to enjoy and crave, but resulting in a slightly inferior balance of taste and texture.

    • These are alright for the price but I find the chocolate is cheaper tasting and the icecream not as smooth/almost grainy like the sugar isn't quite mixed in properly. Doesn't stop me buying them from time to time.

    • I think the Aldi ones taste better.

    • +1

Based on what I tasted myself, they taste about 90% similar to magnums.

      • Did the first read 95% then an edit to 90% or am I going all Scott Morrison (psycho)?

        • +10

Correct I changed my % opinion. I'm eating one right now.

    • +2

They are 80-90% similar. Slightly thicker chocolate cover. I buy this whenever Magnum is not half price.

      • +4

These are pretty good in comparison to Magnums but not as good however the real winner are the Crowns, they are better than Cornettos/Drumsticks I reckon.

    • I would say they are about 75% to Magnums. For the price you can't complain TBH

Im an avid Aldi shopper but these icecreams are inferior to the Coles range i find

  • YUMMO!

  • +2

I really love their mini packs :)

  • +3

    I buy the minis regularly
    Great value
    12 for $5

  • You get what you pay for

    • Not necessarily. We do blind taste tests of Aldi ice cream against the brand name equivalent just for fun. More than 50% of the time we choose the Aldi version as better, and it's always cheaper apart for 50% specials at Coles/Woolies. Their pies are a great example of being even better than the brand name equivalent at a fraction of the cost.

You literally go blind eating the Aldi pies because it’s full of black smoke from Chinese factories

  • Does the packaging smell for this product? Might be where the cost savings came from

The fake Magnums from Coles and Woolworths are better. For anyone that remembers when supermarket brand chocolate was different but not good different, these are slightly similar in that they don't convince your tongue it's really chocolate (though still better than old supermarket brand chocolate or no name choc wedge ice creams today). Which is weird since I credit ALDI for upping the Australian no name chocolate game back in the day. Franklin's No Frills chocolate flavoured goods were there to remind you are poor.
