As good a price as I've ever seen. Unsure of techinn's customer service and shipping times though.

  • How does the performance of these compare to a shocked western digital white label?

    Are these helium drives?

    • +2

Basically the same, and yes helium.

      • Thanks!

But iffy now with some of the comments about the store and Spain location for any warranty issues.

Would be great if anyone who has legitimately felt with them before could give some feedback but going by historical lows for WD external 18TBs this isn’t much cheaper once you factor in delivery, so I might hold off.

    • +2

With very few exceptions; if its over 12tb, they 'always' are.

    • It should be faster, I believe most if not all shucked white labels are limited to 5400rpm (which is a pro or con depending on who you ask)

      • no, the newer WD's are no longer artificially limited to 5400

        • Thats a shame; can we reinstate it?

Time/speed is not a factor for my use, but noise is.

  • This works out to be $25.165/TB (delivered without shipping insurance) which would rank 4th on DiskPrices.com

I'm in need of such storage but am cautious of the international delivery and how protective/safe it is for a HDD. Thoughts?

In theory, shipping on a drive should never be an issue.
The heads should be parked, and the platters are rarely glass anymore.

I remember being a work experience kid and dropping a drive down a flight of 32 steps, hitting each one. It was fine.

In practice, there's a lot of reports of 'badly shipped' drives from (other) sellers, that are DOA or just faulty.

Is that the usual DOA stats being the vocal few? Or is that shipping damage? Thats for you to decide.

    • +2

Impressive. What is even better is that its 4th on the list and it's an actual Enterprise rated drive. While the Seagate ST8000DM004 is the cheapest, that is not a drive you would throw into a server or NAS.

I've had nothing by trouble from Toshiba drives and devices in general.

    would not trust once

    • How big was your sample size?

When we ordered a few hundred laptops and a few thousand drives for work, we had a lower DOA rate than HP or DELL had (for us) the previous year.

Toshiba in our experience do less 'useless checks' on their hardware, at a software level.

So when things get damaged (one was run over…) peripherals stop working, but the system still tries to boot; none of this "cant see XYZ, wont even try" mentality the other brands use.

    Interesting.
I had also never heard of them before but last week googling for mobile phones I ended up on their webpage as well as google did show them as one of the cheapest options (when you use the shopping option in google search). But after seeing that their physical store is in Spain I gave it a miss.
Full disclaimer: my Mrs is from Spain so no prejudice- just that I didn't want to deal with a store on the other side of the globe only to save a couple of bucks.

    • Get the Mrs to Deal with them - the Wife for the Drives :P

  • Would this work with a DS920+?

Website only shows compatibility with up to 16TB

    • Short answer - yes

      • …long answer? lol

Looking at building a SHR array, can I add 18TB later or should I start with it? (Have a 12 at the moment).

        • +1

The short of long answer is, Synology maintains the list of HDDs they have officially tested and provide support for. If it's not listed, it doesn't mean it wont work - some shucked drives may have slight different physical size or connectors, but otherwise they should work though YMMV.

Source: I added 2 x 18TB WD on my 1621+ with no issues (existing of 3 x 14TB SHR pool).

More source on Reddit and many other forums :)

          • @moorey: Thanks for the confirmation, I have been reading but to be honest I don't understand it all, so a simple confirmation it works from someone who has tried has put my mind at ease.

  • which is better?
This one or Seagate Exos X18 18TB 7200RPM Hard Disk Drive $457

  • +6

I've bought 2x WD DC HC550 18TB (WUH721818ALE6L4) from an eBay store in HK, US$320 each, shipped via FedEx. Seller provides 3 yr replacement warranty with them and claimed they will cover both way shipping. Seller's eBay review looks pretty good: 2600+ with 99.7% positive rating.

So I placed the order last week and delivered yesterday. Currently going through the extended SMART test on my Synology unit.

Paid by 28 Degress card via Paypal billed AUD$903 for 2, With approx $25/TB shipped, it's pretty good value. (Even better than shucked ones)
A few things I've noticed with 2x HDD arrived yesterday: 1.) On WD support portal, Serial numbers indicated the drive is OEM product, so it has to deal with the seller for warranty. 2.) HDDs I received were made in Aug 2020. Not a new stock compare to the recent Amazon deal (made in Nov 2021).

P.S. The seller also has Seagate EXO X18 18TB HDD for about $300USD. I've done some research and found people are reporting Seagate and Toshiba drives are both noisy, so quietness is the reason why I stick with WD DC550 series.

Won't there be GST to pay on these when imported?

    • +1

Item below AU$1000 (including shipping cost) will not be charged GST by Australian custom.

Gerry Tax are usually collected by store itself (AU Gov on behalf of Gerry Harvey forced seller which have Australian business entity to collect GST).
So if the store doesn't collect GST, there will be no tax to be paid when you import any item below AU$1000 including shipping.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong…

  • +3

As mentioned by MisterTree above, tax might be an issue as well:
"For orders being shipped to countries outside of the European Union, no VAT and any sales tax will be included in the product prices you see on our website and you will not be charged any taxes by techinn. However your packages may be subject to the customs fees and import duties of the country to which you have your order shipped."

  • Just for the record - I've ordered 3 of these now, 2 have arrived and 1 is on the way. :)
