What Are The Best Medium-Soft Mattresses?

I've gone through most of the typical ozbargain favourites, but they're all on the firm side, so figured I'd come ask what the best softer options are

Budget around $800-$1200, looking at both boxed mattresses and in store mattresses, what should we buy?

I’m a soft mattress lover. Over your price range but Tempur do really good soft mattresses. They can be a little on the warm side since it kind of wraps around you. I have a One of the older Cloud series in soft and love it.
    Here’s the range

You might be able to get something for about $2000

My experience of buying in store is that the marked price can almost always be negotiated down. Negative it doesn’t have the trial period like some of the online companies. Positive is you can get a feel for it in store.

We actually had a hand-me-down Tempur mattress after my Aunt downsized, loved the soft but supportive feeling, unfortunately it was insufferably hot to sleep on as we're both furnaces

Not sure if the technology has improved much since, from what I've seen the gel cooling just absorbs heat and stops working afterwards

      • Yeah I don’t think any of those gel things work, but haven’t tried. I suspect all visco and memory foam type mattresses are hot. Maybe a pillow top is what you need. But then box springs are generally not soft, and non box springs and you feel every movement your partner makes. Dilemmas! Good luck with the search.

  • Have a look at the ikea range. Pretty decent quality and comfort for the price you pay.

    • Similar problem to other OZB favorites, Ikea only makes medium-firm to extra-firm mattresses

Saw a lot of horror stories as well with Ikea mattresses sagging, has the quality improved since?

  • I'm very happy with my Eva mattress - at 850 for a queen that is hybrid coiled spring + memory foam, it'll defo last for a generation.

    • I like the look of the Eva, but it's rated as medium-firm with most reviews saying it's closer to firm

      How firm does it feel?

Honestly, with that budget, you'd be best to go a fairly cheap mattress, say 700-800 and add a nice soft topper on top. Could start with a 2" topper, and add another 2" if you need it.

I actually think this is a great way to go about buying a bed - that way, in a few years, 3-5 or whatever, you can throw out the toppers and buy new ones. Much better than buying an expensive bed that has a pillowtop that you cannot replace. The pillowtop will be the first thing to go.

    • Hadn't considered using a topper, figured it'd make more sense to spend the extra money on a higher quality mattress that won't need one

But that's pretty smart, would get way more life out of it, and easier to adjust
