False advertising.. it is HALOGEN.. not LED on title
    And also 'spotlight'

  • This is a decent deal. Unfortunately I already have 2 60W transformers I'm not using…

They are certainly worth swapping out the halogen for LED though.

  • This is an AC transformer and will be no good for LED lights in the future.
Outdoor LED lights will need to use a DC transformer.

    • YMMV but I've never experienced any issues, flickering or anything with mine running purely LEDs on my line.

You do need to keep in mind to double the wattage when checking capacity though.

      • Does the transformer get hot? You're slapping a diode onto an AC circuit.

        • MR16 retrofit LEDs probably have a bridge rectifier in the bulb.

        • Not that I've noticed…

From memory the instruction booklet specifically mentioned using it for LEDs as lots of HPM lights are LED only. And all it mentioned was doubling the wattage.

And the LED deck lights I got noted these transformers as the ones to use for them.

[Edit: see here only special mention is load rating.

          • @NigelTufnel: And the LED deck lights I got noted these transformers as the ones to use for them.

The only reason i mentioned it was that i tried to run some 5W led out door lights on these transformers and they either didn't work or if they did they flickered. Further reading on AC verse DC was that AC could be more dangerous to your heart if you were to get an electric shock and a bridge rectifier was probably needed to fix the flickering.
So i went DC transformer and everything worked

            • @Loot N Plunder: Yeah, flickering certainly can be an issue for AC and LEDs, and perhaps I've just been lucky not to experience it.
And yep, AC is more dangerous that DC generally, but at 12V unless you've got heart issues already, I can't see it being much of a shock.

Op do you just go around raiding Bunnings clearance sections around the country?

  • halogen lights!!!
And is it LED light compatible. Modern halogen transformers won't start unless a certain wattage is reached and LED bulbs cant reach that threshold.

  • My garden lights constantly get eaten out by ants. If only I could find a way to stop this. Also if I could just find replacement string light solar panels…
