Wish we could use these for recharges.

    • you can

      • +3

        How?

This is physical sim card only ,not recharge pin code!

        • Two ways. Either port out to a cheap Sim and port back using this Sim and registering as a new customer or ask the boost agent to apply the credit of this to your existing Sim.

Second option was a nightmare for me. They said they needed to actuate the Sim then port the number over yada yada yada. Their porting system was down and took them days to do. I would go with the first option.

          • +10

@Hahuh: If you have to port out it means you can't use it as a recharge.

          • @Hahuh: I think porting is better option. I did that. Planning to do again this year.

@boozler: this, i have been able to do it for 2 years in a row, very painless process, took lest than 15 minutes

            • @pichxlonco: The fact you can get them to apply the credit to your existing sim?

              • +1

@nightelves: They did the first time, second time they transferred my old number into the new sim, so all i had to do was swap sims after a few minutes

    • +1

I am really sorry to hear this but every time a starter pack deal is put up. A lot of people want to use it for recharging and ask the question.
But then it’s very clearly stated as a starter pack.

    • You need to have date of birth registered with your current operator too

      • So name, address, and DOB? Is that all?

        • Yep that's all I needed when I did Optus to Woolies

    • +1

Name and DoB have to match for prepaid. You'll also receive a 2FA authorisation code on your existing service.

Just remember the current upsized GB allowances only get applied if you activate before 1st Feb

    • Thanks for the heads up; I have 28 days left on my card, so will wait until the next sale! (need to port out and back again anyway)

      • +3

Last time I hit up their online chat and they were able to apply the plan to my sim without porting

        • Would it append to the existing plan or it will overwrite and start from today if I contact them. Thanks.

    • boost.com.au seems to imply 7th feb? Anyone confirm?
Cause I haven't got the sim yet.

I must be living in another world, these deals, even with the discount are terrible value compared to other telco offers. Not even close.

    • +20

Full Telstra network. Others don't even come close.

      • I never need to use the extra towers located in the middle of the bush. Ultimately your paying for those extra towers which is evident in the value of these "offers". Unless that's where you live and don't have a choice, then it's completely understandable that this might be a good deal.
I've not paid more than $10/month for 20 GB in about 2 years and get coverage everywhere I use my phone.

        • Would you mind sharing your plan?

            @xfelix: Sure.

Gives me coverage everywhere I use my phone plus some.

            • +1

@SimAus007: Yes there are many nice offeres from other telco providers. Where boost stand out is with unlimited international call for 30 different countries. Very good plan for most immigrants.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: I am from Brazil, like most, we use WhatsApp nowadays for this, so international calls are always free to all countries, including video calls which are far more important when talking to family and friends overseas :)

                • +3

@SimAus007: We do use whatsapp, but some of my relatives old enough not to understand how to use a smartphone cannot be reached. Also there are times when the other person might have switched of data. Plenty of times calls on whatsapp keep breaking. In such cases, this is useful.

                  • +1

@[Deactivated]: I can only speak for Brazil, where WhatsApp is the standard form of mobile communication now and we rarely have video or audio call issues.
I speak with my mother for about 2 to 3 hours once per week and other friends without any issues, on video.
Depends on the country I guess.

                  • +1

@[Deactivated]: International calling on Boost has also been great for me to contact hotels, etc before travelling overseas.

Also if I am driving through regional areas, I find mobile data can be patchy but generally voice calls will work. So it's much handier being able to call international mobile numbers than using WhatsApp. Not to mention normal mobile calls work flawlessly with my car's hands-free but WhatsApp doesnt.

                    • +1

@stewy: Totally agree, whatsapp is good, but it can never completely replace actual phone calling.

                • @SimAus007: Boost is adding unlimited calls / SMSs to Brazil from February 2022.

                  • @whyisave: I don't use traditional calls or SMS for overseas chat, haven't done this for 2 to 3 years.
I don't even use traditional SMS for local communications nowadays.
We all chat on WhatsApp for this now (or Instagram DM)
I never look at overseas inclusions of calls now with any provider as it's of no use to me and even my 72 year old mother uses WhatsApp.
For others this may be different :)

                    • @SimAus007: 1) You're using the Internet to communicate.
When you don't have the Internet, you can use the SIM to call Brazil.
The SIM can work, for those travel remotely in Australia.

                      2) Using WhatsApp or Instagram, means all of your communications is surrendered to Meta (Facebook).
Many people are OK with this; some are not.
Calling via SIM is just a different use-case altogether.

                      3) Using the various chat applications to communicate,
means your content is "rich text", eg. pictures, videos, links, text formatting, etc.
                      or even with video calls.
It cannot compare to voice calls or SMSs anyway.

Maybe, in about 10-years' time, the technology companies will buy all the telecommunications companies.

I'm not asking you to change your habits or your SIM plan :-D

No one asked where you were from, and neither did you ask if Boost was adding Brazil.
I just gave bonus information, and other person can read our discussion and this could be useful to them to know about Brazil.

                      • +2

@whyisave: If you look above someone else was referring to international included calls/SMS, that's why I mentioned where I was from and how most of us communicate in Brazil (even businesses advertising their WhatApp on billboards and TV is common in Brazil), wasn't in reference to your comments in any way (it was simply a reference to how I use my phone and the international calls FOR ME is of no use).
Like you, I am not asking anyone to change their habits, purely pointing out how all my family and friends communicate (many of the comments in here are how people personally use their phones, which can also be helpful to those that might be in a similar situation).
I never go to areas where I don't have data and I have more than enough data each month for everything I do, so this is of no concern.
Anyway, just sharing, that's all, everyone's usage is very different, so it's not a one size fits all.

                • @SimAus007: Good on ya, but Whatsapp isn't always the replacement of the standard international calls in many cases. Some examples - calling very old relos or parents who aren't very 'mobile savvy', calling customer support/ service numbers (e.g. banks), calling people when they aren't in good internet zones or who don't have enough mobile data for some reasons. Also, often the standard call quality is better than Whatsapp calls (besides 'reconnecting' status every few minutes sometimes, annoying yeah?)

                  • @virhlpool: Call quality better on a standard call than WhatsApp, I totally disagree on this front.
It is mostly much better in my experience with WhatsApp, it's often very compressed on a standard call (standard phone audio compression is A-Law/U-Law 8bit 8Khz).
Only if you are on an HD call to HD call this isn't the case, not usually the case on standard international calls.
Either way, for me, 90% + of my calls are video, it's a must for a more personal connection when you're so far away from your family, and when we do this we are all on a home WiFi connection with multiple people on the same video call (family and friends groups)
We rarely get a "reconnecting" issue, but of course, this will depend (mostly) on your internet connection.
Oh well, all good, we all use our services differently and your usage is obviously very different to mine, so best to stick with what works best for you :)
                    Enjoy your Sunday!

            • @SimAus007: You must be lucky then. I used to be with Optus (whose network Catch Mobile is on) and had frequent dropouts with the greater Sydney area. Recently ported to Kogan to port back to Boost, and the experience has been very similar to Optus.

              • @kron: Not lucky, all of my friends are on the Optus network and all get coverage everywhere they use their phones, the same as me.
I'm currently in Melbourne and travel to plenty of major regional centres and other cities and I've never had coverage issues.

                • @SimAus007: Have you guys heard of the term “ wifi calling” it solves your issues inside buildings, if you have wifi and wifi calling is enabled which i think in Android, only aussie baseband have this option. So the wifi calling is solution to all the weaker signals, there should be no complains anymore.

                  • +1

@sajidmib: Wifi calling has to be supported by your carrier. Only about 6-7 Optus MVNOs support it at the moment and none are cheap. The likes of Amaysim, CatchConnect, Coles Mobile etc dont support it.

            • @SimAus007: For me, Optus is by far the worst of the three network providers. Cant maintain a 4g connection without moving out to the front yard, but that's because the closest Optus tower is almost twice as far away as the nearest Telstra and Vodafone towers.

              Horses for courses.

        • -1

It's not only towers which Telstra has the most but Telstra also is the only telco with Band 28 access on 4G. This is the best frequency for penetrating buildings and they also have the higher frequencies of Optus and Vodafone. So literally no other telco is close to as good.

          • @4foxache: Again, I have personally never have coverage issues inside or outside a building.
Optus also has cells (micro cells) inside many buildings, these can be easily found online (locations).

            • @SimAus007: Well you can argue the facts but Telstra has the best frequencies and by far the most towers. So you might be lucky but on average nothing else comes close to the Telstra network.

              • @4foxache: Of course Telstra has the most number of towers, as it should for what you are paying, go back to my first post.
You are arguing with yourself now ;)

          • +1

@4foxache: In the Coles across the road I have zero bars on Telstra whilst my wife on Optus has almost full reception.

Maybe it’s just a black spot, but it’s happened in several other stores too.

          • +1

@4foxache: "4foxache" Not sure where you heard that but Optus has had B28 / 700mHz 4G band early on just like Telstra ( although Telstra had more towers ), and now Vodafone also has this B28 in some places for 4G.

            https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

              • @4foxache: Not sure what you are thinking with that link?

                • @ozhunter68: Telstra the only of the 3 with bands in the 700, 800 and 900 range. The lower the frequency the better the building penetration so will be less black spots on average. Even with the same amount of towers they'd still be better on average.

                  • @4foxache: In both my link as well as yours it clearly states that both Telstra And Optus use Band 28/700mHz, and as your link is old and has not been updated it does not show Vodafone who for the last few years have been re-shaping their own bands as well as won auctions for more 700mHz frequency in spicific areas. Myself as well as thousands of OzBargainers have been discussing this on here for many years and have been buying phones with b28 just to get the most out of the Optus network or if unlocked to also be able to get most out of the Telstra Network. There is more to it as to make calls and maximise coverage/internet you also have to have the Correct 3G bands too for whichever network you're using.

              • @4foxache: Can confirm 4foxache you are incorrect. Optus does have Band28 700Mhz.

During new year I went to Maroondah reservoir park (VIC) with 6 other friends and did a quick trek. I was the only one with signal. I’m def staying with Boost.

  • My knowledge of the mobile phone world is basic. Always interested in a deal, so could you suggest one of the "full telstra network" deals you suggest to be much better than these on offer so I can check it out? genuine interest. Thanks

    • +1

It's only Boost and Telstra who have access to the full Telstra network.

Boost is limited to 4G, while Telstra plans include 4Gx and 5G data speeds.

      • Just to clarify. Boost does have access to 4gx, just no 5g. Theirs a bit of conflicting information out there but it 100% has 4gx access (personal experience using an Android to see exactly what band) and you can confirm from the paragraph above this coverage map: https://boost.com.au/pages/coverage

        • Interesting, that makes sense, thanks for letting me know.
The Boost AU wiki page has a source that claims the speed is limited to 100Mbps instead of 300Mbps. Perhaps it's 4Gx limited to 100 (since the standard 4G is 50)?

    $7 delivery

  • Can I use this as a voucher for my current Boost SIM ?
It about to expire in 30 days

    • Yes, but you need to port out to another provider,
and then port back in, onto this new Boost SIM card.

      To do this, you need:
      - your current SIM (expiring in 30 days)
      - SIM #1 (to port into)
      - SIM #2 (the new Boost SIM)

Current SIM -> SIM #1 (to keep your same number)
SIM #1 -> SIM #2 (still keep same number, but onto new Boost SIM and new Boost 12-month plan)

    • +2

You can't use it as a voucher per se, but you can do as above, or contact Boost customer care so you don't have to get another sim and port out and back. After confirming details and telling them I mistakenly bought a new sim instead of recharge, the person on the chat line got me to activate the new sim and then they transferred my phone number to retain it. It took about 45 minutes on chat.

  • +1

Currently with Telstra, wanting to swap to one of these Boost prepaid promos as Telstra keep raising my monthly prices.. is there a way to do this where I get to keep my existing number?

    • +2

      Yep easily, it's called porting.

Just buy a sim starter pack like one of these and follow the included instructions for porting your number across. It's very simple and these days it can take as little as 5mins to move your number from one provider to another.

      • Porting from Telstra to Boost is not straightforward at all. Easier to port to Optus/Voda on a $2 SIM and port back in to Boost.

        • You can still do it? It just takes a bit longer I believe. It's still the exact same process.

        • +1

I ported from Telstra to Boost last year and it was completely straightforward using chat.

          • @gosm: I did it last week and it was a nightmare. Call Boost and told I have to activate SIM with temp number, call Telstra and tell them what's going on and to deactivate my account/number, Call Boost back who tell me Telstra still hasn't done that, Call Telstra to repeat the process, call Boost to transfer number over.

Doesn't sound so bad except for the fact that both companies use the same system and can read each others case notes but yet I'm doing all the leg work and having to explain the situation each time cause you don't go through to the same people. A lot easier to just get a $2 sim card from somewhere and port out to that and back in to Boost.

            • @AngryAlfred: Would it be similar problems porting from boost to Telstra Prepaid too ?

I really want the full Telstra 4GX nerwork and happy to pay bit more for it.

            • @AngryAlfred:

              1. Got my Boost Sim.
              2. Checked my details were up to date in my Telstra account.
              3. Got on Boost chat and asked to port in from Telstra.

Answered a few questions. Done in maybe 15 minutes. Maybe I got lucky, but as I said it could not have been easier.

  • The $150 cannot be recharged, once it is expired, you have to move to another plan.

    • Yeah the 12 month recharge is $200 :-(

      • Once you're migrated, Boost supposedly sends a $150 discounted plan with 30GB bonus data. I was moved across yesterday, nothing yet.
        @T-man

    • +1

      Port out and back in?

  • +1

by the time you buy this, + postage and then use a swap sim… you won't be far from $150 $200 $300

What is your time and effort worth? if it's your first recharge, you'll get the bonus data guaranteed.

    • Yeah saving isn't great. These $150 SIM use to go for $120.

  • +7

    For all existing boost customers,
Just buy this starter, dont activate but chat online. Tell them you want to transfer your current number to this new sim.
They verify your details and ask for new sim serial number.
Then after 1 min, old sim dies. Wait 20 mins.
Put the new sim. Voila….. done. Same number. Another year of boost…
For me, $157 for a year with 140gb
    Not bad.

    • Depends on the online chat Rep?
I went with Coles $99 plus $25 active
      Don’t need the data.

  • Any idea when Boost international roaming be back again?
