Has the Lock Picking Lawyer tested this one? All the ones I've seen him test have laughable security

    • +4

Yea, it's probably at the same level as 99.9% of Australian homes security, in that you could just kick the door down or break a window. In most cases, I'd rather they break the door lock than a window/door.

      • +1

All doors in Australia are designed to be pretty easily kicked in with one good kick. It's the design rules. So police and firemen can have quick access.

        • +2

Yeah if you're worried about someone kicking your door in you have bigger problems.

People just interested in stealing property don't pick locks or kick in doors.

    • My thoughts exactly - no way in hell would I have enough faith in these to be the single barrier to entry into my home.

      • What do you have currently on all your entrances?

        • A physical key of course. Where I'm coming from is that these digital locks usually have a much lower quality backup keyway that is easier than a traditional one to pick.

          • +1

@Hinee: which lock though? Do you know the brand and how it rates? Assuming you did thorough investigation into it's effectiveness? Most key locks are crazy easy to pick, so it's only a small selection of brands/models. Even the most common ones we get were picked in under a few seconds by lockpickinglawyer

I’ve got a glass door on my back deck. I kind of struggle to get worked up about the possibility of a skilled locksmith type being able to easily open my doors. I’ve got cameras with cloud storage, good lights and insurance.

I haven’t tried the lock on my door - but I bought some picks on Wish and learned the basics of pick sports on you tube - the house door locks I found at a salvage place and tried to pick were all pretty easy.

      • If someone breaks in, all you are going to get is video of some random in a hoodie and mask. Thieves are pretty good at this stuff by now

        • +1

Thieves are good at avoiding houses with cameras and robbing the place without cameras.

99% of home security is appearing more secure than next door, house burglars aren't interested in making a lot of effort.

If somebody wants to actually make the effort to get at you in your house, hire security.

      • I've got a glass sliding door with security screen out the back, i picked both with very little practice. Took probably 3 minutes total to get in both, i wasnt too surprised about the glass door but the security door was an eye opener.

      Locks only stop honest thieves

      • Very well put…

        • "Locks only stop honest thieves" - and dumb ones.

    Anyone used this with deCONZ/HA?

From memory there is an issue with all Tuya locks not working on anything but their hub.
It's also not on here so doubt it will work.

      Hey Siri, you mean !

I have Alexa open the roller door by voice, super handy.

      • Mines via Google & meross.. Only problem is it asks for a PIN… Which is guess anyone can do overhear!!! Does Alexa ask for a PIN?

        • No i don't have any pin enabled, i use Gogogate which is now iSmartGate.

  • Are these products even meant to increase security levels? Or are they merely a convenience thing?

    • +2

Convenience, plus its pretty and most devices have a nice jingle.

    • 100% convenience. I don't carry keys with me anymore which is really nice, my wife often forgot her keys and had to wait outside till I got home a few times, but now just use fingerprints to get in. We set timed access for tradies/cleaners with pins.

I think the best part is when I go for a walk/run, just walk out the door with no keys at all.

    • Depends.

My wife likes to leave the doors unlocked because she never remembers to bring her keys outside.

In our circumstances, a biometric lock is more secure, because it is always locked.

At the end of the day, most home security is about inconvenience and theatre. Burglars are opportunistic and lazy.

looks like a good price for what it is. Zigbee + Finger Print + PIN lock for $130.

  • Would this be suitable for an internal garage door? I'd need the fingerprint/code on the garage side.

    • Why would it not be?

      • I'm not sure. I thought some had to be installed a certain way but I guess all would have the code side on the "outside"

        • +1

Same as installing any other lock. Just make sure the dimensions will fit appropriately.

    • Same use case here and looking for something which can fit into the existing doorknob cutout (this one would need a square one to work). Does anyone have any pointers for similar smart locks?

  • You forgot the hub, which is required to work with this. Additional AUD 71.87 + delivery.

    • oof

    • +1

I assume the hub is only required if you need to use Zigbee functions. PIN and finger print entry should still work.

      • Will that lock be "smart" without Zigbee functions?

  • Anyone recommend a cheap weatherproof, remote lock for a gate (want gate locked at night, open during the day without having to traipse across long wet garden every night and morning with the key)?

    • You can get the keypad ones as they waterproof

  • This needs a square box cutout in the door itself, so hard for me to DIY. The only smart lock that could fit into my existing latch lock door holes was yale unity and It jammed so much I had to return it.
    Nice price tho.

    • +1

IMO the better ones to get are the mortise ones that have both the deadbolt and latch built in. The dead bolt only ones are pretty finicky unless you pair it with a manual door latch and the deadbolt hole has plenty of room.

  • Install looks complex, needs a significant square shaped hole in your door.

  • This suitable for Australia use? Or rather suit our doors?
