PowerColor AMD Radeon RX 6600 Hellhound 8GB RDNA 2 Graphics Card $669 + Delivery @ PC Case Gear

390

It seems that GPU pricing is finally on a gradual decline

This is not the best price for an RX 6600 that has been on OZ Bargain, but for this particular model it is the best price since launch and the Hellhound model scored really well in Hardware Unboxed testing for thermals and fan noise (for 6600 XT that use the same cooler design)

$659 for MSI Armor with free shipping from BPCTech on 26-12-21
$649 for PowerColor Fighter plus shipping from PCCG on 11-12-21

Given the GPU price trend is on the down swing, the RTX 3050 releases tomorrow, Intel GPUs, Nvidia 4000 series and AMD 6000 refresh are all on the horizon it might be worth waiting but if you need a competent GPU then this may be the deal for you

  • Where does this lie amongst the RTX range? Between a 3060 and 3060Ti?

    • +13

its not a xt model. the Radeon RX 6600 is slower overall than the RTX 3060, though it remains a great 1080p graphics card capable of high frame rates even with eye candy cranked to the max in most games.

Between RTX2070 or RTX 3050 and RTX 3060 for 1080p gaming according to Hardware Unboxed testing - https://youtu.be/efejANULP3I

This might be a pretty attractive deal depending on the price and availability of the RTX 3050 that is releasing tomorrow. If the RTX 3050 is available at MSRP ($429 AUD) then it is a decent buy, but if its closer to $500-600, then the RX 6600 is a better buy

Was a bit confused by how you've expressed this, but 6600 non-XT is better than 2070 and 3050, but worse than 3060, have I got that right?

Crazy we are still looking at spending this sort of money for performance equal to a gtx 1070 from 2016.

@studentl0an: I was keen to purchase a 2070 at roughly $700 in 2019 and finally something similar here in 2022?

            • @wt860: As you may be aware - cryptocurrency, increases in demand due to lockdowns and chip shortages drove prices of GPUs in the last few years.

          • @studentl0an: I was referring to the 3050 level gpus mentioned in the above comment

        • you could buy a 2nd hand 1070ti for cheaper than this, much faster too
sad state of affairs, but im happy with my 1070ti as it's still a beast at 1080p

What do you mean? Does he lie or somehow sabotage the the benchmarks?

@FireRunner: he thinks DLSS is a sham, Ray Tracing is nothing special etc etc

            • @Freestyle: That’s not unreliable. Maybe biased but it looks like the tests and results are reliable. If he skewed results or tampered with the tests to make Nvidia look worse then he’d be unreliable

@FireRunner: wouldnt trust his opinion if he thinks any new tech he doesnt understand isnt good.

@Freestyle: There's no such thing as a completely unbiased view. It just so happens his views clashed with yours
It's fine if you don't agree or like the channel but it's not unreliable source of information

            • +1

@Freestyle: Raytracing is so limited right now it's not worth basing a purchasing decision on. If the game has a good RT implementation then performance tanks and if the implementation is bad you're left with slightly nicer looking puddles. DLSS is useful but it all depends on if the game supports it.

If you're the kind to play a few games constantly and they use these features then it may be worth looking at. I have no idea if my favourite game of 2022 (or '23, '24…) will implement these well and so benchmarking things with them enabled is pointless for me. There's no point including DLSS results in the benchmark averages because while a handful of any given sample of games may have DLSS enabled, the games I may want to play may or may not have it as a feature.

The channel doesn't have a hate boner for DLSS or real time raytracing, they're just not really killer features.

              • -1

@Diji: They do have a hate boner for those 2 techs, I cant be bothered to link you the podcasts since it would be a pain to find them but they've dismissed those techs quite openly as just 'dumb features' and not even worth considering when you are buying a card.

                This is just one example

                • @Freestyle:

not even worth considering when you are buying a card

When you're buying a card it makes sense to look at raster performance first and foremost. DLSS and RT performance only come into consideration if the Nvidia card happens to be the same price and performance as the AMD card. This has been the case for ages, no one in their right mind would have bought an Nvidia card back in the day because of PhysX. Steve even demonstrates this line of thinking in the video you linked, saying that he would go for the RTX 3070 over the 6700 XT because for very little difference in price you get DLSS (counter to your claim that they hate DLSS). Not exactly a glowing review for the AMD card.

meanwhile clickbait unboxed it really physically hurts them to say anything bad about AMD

Their most recent AMD review (of the RX 6500 XT) was incredibly negative. On the CPU front AMD has been crushing it so it makes sense that there's been little negative to say there. Even so, the channel has made mention of their complete lack of decent budget CPU options.

                  • -1

@Diji: you realise when they were making those comments and reviews it wasnt know that the supply issues would be a problem this long and we'd have such price gouging of GPUs? So you cannot now use that as an excuse for their opinions rofl

At MSRP, both cards same price, if you dont consider the superior features of one card to another just because you think its 'lame' or whatever even though than biased is all I can call that reviewer.

Dont see them call out AMD's price gouging and bad business practices like they lock on whenever Intel or Nvidia does something though, I still dont know why people revere AMD as 'for the consumers!' even after 5000 series release lol

                    • +1

                      @Freestyle:

At MSRP, both cards same price, if you dont consider the superior features of one card to another just because you think its 'lame' or whatever even though than biased is all I can call that reviewer.

I think you may be confused as to how reviews are structured. The first part is benchmarking the products and showing how they perform - demonstrating which is superior, divorced from other factors. The good bit about this is that you can still use their benchmarks to see what's better in mythical RRP land or any other conceivable price point, just calculate the cost to performance based on the graphs.

The second part, the part you seem to be hung up on, is opinion. A good review will take into account price to performance, compatibility, build quality, and other factors depending on the product. A reviewer isn't obligated to say something is superior because it is better value in the isolated case of being priced at RRP. The fact you think that's the case is utterly bizarre to me, you're looking for someone to help you make purchasing decisions but you want them to offer opinions based on prices that don't apply to you.

Dont see them call out AMD's price gouging and bad business practices like they lock on whenever Intel or Nvidia does something though, I still dont know why people revere AMD as 'for the consumers!' even after 5000 series release lol

They gave the RX 6600 a pretty bad review, only conceding that it is probably the least bad card you could buy at the time, and called the RX 6500 XT the worst GPU release ever. Not seeing the bias there. On the flip side they praised the value of the i5 12400, so when Intel releases a good product they get praised just as AMD would.

A significant number of people don't care about RT because it tanks performance and for every game like Control that does it well there are a dozen where it doesn't look a whole lot better, and DLSS is featured in a slim portion of games. If you're dead set on buying a card for these features then you don't need a review channel or a list of benchmark results to tell you what you already know, which is that you're going to buy an Nvidia card.

Not sure why you're singling out HW Unboxed though since none of the other credible channels give DLSS and RT much weight in their reviews either.

                      • -1

@Diji: Lol others give them more credit than them if you cant see that I cant help you. They dont even understand the basics of how DLSS works and they calling it a “dumb gimmick” yeah no it isnt, there’s a reason every review includes these techs nowadays

You say “a significant portion of people dont care” yeah so Nvidia is pushing through with the tech just for 10 of us who care, you are now acting like a redditor living in their own ecbo chamber only taking into account what you yourself see on the internet forgetting that vast majority of buyers arent even gonna bother posting or talking about it online

What makes you so sure every single gamer is an fps addict? 4k gamers exist, why would they play in 4k then if “it tanks the fps” like you claim? People dont buy 3080s to play every game in 200 fps

They titles 6700XT review as “Better than 3070?!” even though it was an overly disappointing card couldnt help themselves shilling for a company, i like how you ignore this though and just focus on the more recent ones which would look even dumber to clickbait title and they were smart enough not to.

if you like hardware unboxed just because they are aussie good for you thats not my bar. Rather follow people who calls out every single company for their stupid decision not just the ones that are unpopular online

                        • @Freestyle: You're cooked mate. Why would Steve say that he would choose an Nvidia card for the DLSS if he thought it was just a gimmick and he was an AMD shill? The clickbait review you mention has the thumbnail of "Better than 3070?" (note the lack of sensationalising it with an exclamation mark" with the answer in the review being "it's pretty much on par in raster with no DLSS and poorer RT performance". Not very good for an AMD shill as you claim.

You have a massive hate boner for the channel because they don't prioritise the features you do and honestly that's kind of sad. Nvidia is not your friend, corporations don't need you to defend them.

Next you're gonna tell me that Wendell from Level1Techs is an AMD shill because his 6500 XT review is more positive than the others.'

Ironic, considering you're the one acting as though you're in an echo chamber, criticising people who don't think RT is a primary point of contention.

What makes you so sure every single gamer is an fps addict? 4k gamers exist, why would they play in 4k then if “it tanks the fps” like you claim? People dont buy 3080s to play every game in 200 fps

People gaming at 4K are the minority, just like the people playing with RT enabled. It tanking the FPS isn't even a claim, it's a fact. Just look at benchmarks. Why is this even an issue? If you know you want good RT performance then just look at graphs and see what handles RT better. If you know you want DLSS then you don't need a review, you already know you want an Nvidia card. Do you want reviews to cater to your personal taste or something? Absolutely bonkers.

People buying 3080 tier cards aren't even anywhere near the majority so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.

if you like hardware unboxed just because they are aussie good for you thats not my bar.

I like them because they're credible. Their credibility isn't diminished because you think raytracing is more important than they do. That's like someone saying you can't trust Gamers Nexus case reviews because they think thermals are more important than flashy RGB and glass panels.

                          • @Diji: lol, you say nvidia is not my friend while defending a AMD shill channel and now Intel is doing well they back to "AMD IN TROUBLE" clickbait titles, you like this shit? why?

                            yeah nah credible my ass

huurrr durrr hardware unboxed aussie so must defend them

basically you this entire time, telling me what techs are gimmicks and whatnot

how is someone credible, who doesnt even understand how DLSS works before commenting on it and more or less shitting on it? If they were half as credible as you say they'd have crossed 1m subs before Gamer's Nexus did who btw is a much more NICHE channel.

Maybe thats up your alley though, judging something without understanding it

RTX is crap, I have a 3070 and it tanks performance so much it is not worth it at all,

          • @Rod M: so you fully recommend Radeon?

            • @kaikor: Radeon AMD or Nvidia are both good, just get what you can afford. Pricing is set to drop across the board so I would not get any new card till we see what happens with the sillycoins now dropping so hard recently,

            • @kaikor: I meant raytracing (RTX) is crap, the 3070 is a perfectly fine card,

          • @Rod M: What games and settings are you running your 3070?

            • -1

@edfoo: various games, but mostly BF5 and BF2042 @1440, custom settings with most at low.

              • @Rod M: Right, you posted after me what you mean was when you have to turned on Ray Tracing. Yes, the FPS will drop like a bomb in every RTX 3000 series card at the moment.

          • @Rod M: By 'RTX' do you mean Ray Tracing or the 30 series Nvidia Geforce cards?

      • +3

FWIW as it may help someone, a few months ago I was choosing between a Radeon RX 6600 XT and a Geforce RTX 3060. I read many reviews comparing the cards and watched many of the FPS side-by-side comparison videos on Youtube comparing the 6600 XT to the RTX 3060 (and other cards at the same time, as well).

The 6600 XT overall is better for gaming than the RTX 3060. The only catch is that the 6600 XT doesn't have dedicated ray tracing cores like the RTX 3060. Whilst at 1440p on Epic detail settings on Fortnite, my 6600 XT returns FPS of 100-120 (think I've got the 120 FPS limit turned on in Fortnite too), as soon as I turn on ANY of the Ray Tracing settings, it slows to a crawl and is pretty much unplayable. Interestingly enough, I picked up a RTX 2080 so I could check out Ray Tracing and even on mid-level Ray Tracing settings on Fornite (admittedly at 1440p), FPS takes a massive hit and the graphics don't look significantly better. I changed the resolution down to 1080p but FPS still takes a substantial hit so I've turned Ray Tracing off completely. Unless you have a RTX 3080 and above, give me high detail and resolution over Ray Tracing anyday.

    • -1

      Substantially worse than a 3060.
This things pretty close to an old 1070.

I'd think of this as a decent 1080p card or 1440p card if your ok with turning down a lot of settings or running @ low fps.

    • use passmark to compare CPUs and GPU processing power

      RX 6600 = RTX 2060

will destroy anything in 1080p, good 1440p gaming too

      decent VR experience

2060 is a great card, considering crypto prices this looks like a good deal imho

Value also depends on what your current GPU is or if you are building from scratch. Beside the % increase in performance if you have an existing GPU plus the value that you get back from selling the existing one. What I managed to get from selling my 2070 makes it easier to buy a 3070 TI in the end even though it was way above MSRP. From a 3070 TI, the next justifiable upgrade path would be the next generation GPU if the price/value is right. Hoping Intel ARC will provide pricing pressure on AMD/NVIDIA offerings.

  • +10

I personally feel like we're in price bumslide territory for GPUs. Sick looking crypto, Eth going POS, lots of people predicting chip shortages easing, Intel getting it's Ark on. If you don't need now, hold out even another 2-3mo to see if the current minor dip in prices will continue. I can't see them going up.
