        -11 Votes for saying thanks?

        Slow day today guys?

        • +3

          Mondayitis :)

        • I'm late to the post but -11 votes must have meant that he edited his original post?

      • +6

why does this have 11 negs? i dont get it

        • +9

he said something like "you get what you pay for, why pay $1 for leftovers". Then sneakily edited his comment. Deserves double negs IMO.

      • +7

he edited his comment obviously, he was saying some thing like you pay $1 for left over

        • +4

Yes, his comment was "They value their health, they'll pay full price" something like that I remember.

      • .

    • -6

clearly you guys have nothing better to do

      • Whereas you take the time out of your very busy social calendar to sit around and troll bargain websites.

        • -1

since when did saying thanks equate to trolling?

  • +3

    yum but only from 10-11

    • yeah, yum but too early for Pho.

      • +13

pho is supposed to be eaten for breakfast!

at some of the best stalls in vietnam, 10-11am is too late…the pho is sold out by then!

but yeah, the deal is an inconvenient time for those who work 9-5…

        • Yeah, I know it's for breakfast in Vietnam, but the Melbourne pho noodle and the size of the bowl makes it so filling for breakfast. I always go for the large size because it's so yummy and satisfies my pho craving.

The serving in Vietnam is so small I always have to order another bowl, which is so annoying. Pho is too addictive you can't just have a small portion.

      • Never too early for great Pho!

  • Great deal!

  • +4

    I love Vietnamese pho

    BRUNCH every day this week..

    • -7

Read the ad properly, its only monday, tuesday, wednesday of each week.

      • +3

        Lol yeah doh.

So Brunch Mon-Wed this week and next week..

      • +1

I get the negs for my wrong info, but why did they neg you too?? They must be affiliated with the business I guess? Lol.

  • +4

In the small print it reads "Show the flyer to redeem……." OP, where do we get the flyer from?

    • +2

oh i didnt even realise they had that. I just went there without a flyer and it was fine. Staff was so friendly

  • OM NOM NOM

  • +6

Pho is awesome! I wouldn't mind eating it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

      • +17

Yes I did read it properly. My statement is true regardless of this deal.

        • If you ate Pho that often you'd be sick of it within a day or two.

          Just like any other food?

  • Pity it's miles from anywhere. Just think of the lost productivity to the economy for each person who goes there when they should be working…?

    Good deal though. No Neg.

  • +3

    Mmmmyum, good for the pho-natics.

  • +8

phuc dat, we dont have time to make pho!

  • +4

Oh pho phucks sakes, why do I live in Sydney? PML

    • sydney pho vs melbourne pho…. which is better?

      • Nothing beats Pho An in Sydney

        • +1

I'm sorry but if you say that then you have not had Pho.
I cringe at how people could possibly think Pho An is the best…. It is full of MSG and quite frankly Pho An has commercialised so bad… I still remember when they were in their infancy and actually had flavour (albeit still full of msg) and the right condiments to go with pho…

        • Maybe like 7 years ago. I don't know of any pho these days that don't contain MSG. Considering they are mass produced and sold so cheaply, hard not to add 'extra flavouring'.

        • +1

Some vietnamese restaurants in bankstown still do it the traditional way.

I forgot its name. They have a good soup base that doesn't have MSG.

        • +1

          So Pho So Good.

        • what da Pho!

        • Melbourne pho wins hands down.

Every Sydney-siders would recommend Pho An but it's so overrated. The flavour is too strong of the spices and I guess the serving isn't as generous as in Melbourne. Been to cabramatta, marrickville and CBD and the pho is never quite right. The worse one was in the cbd where u order a large but there's hardly anything in there, and it's expensive too.

Go to the authentic Vietnamese hub like Footscray and Richmond and the pho is so awesome. Makes me want to go and get one now.

        • @whatever

Cabramatta's still good in my opinion, but head to Canley Vale (neighbouring suburb) more restaurants. Dunno why.

      • definitely Melbourne Pho is better!

      • I aint going to melbourne to get a bowl of pho no matter how good it is.

      • Flemmington Pho is the best I've had in Sydney. Possibly best in Aus?

      • Try Hung Vuong, Footscray, Melbourne. Best so far, in my opinion.
Mum's Pho wins hands down by far though, love it with thorny coriander.

  • May the PHO! be with you

  • awesome find!!!!

    $1 pho :)

  • -3

The best Pho in Melbourne is Mekong in Swanston St.

Get their menu item 1, "Chicken Special", apart from the chicken you get the heart, giblets, blood etc. Mmmmm.

    • +6

I can tell you that Mekong isn't the "best" pho in town in Melbourne.

      • +1

Indeed. The best pho places aren't in the city

      • +1

Victoria street, Richmond is the best Pho around.

        • +3

Really? I know of excellent ones in Footscray and Springvale but have yet to find a decent one in Richmond.
One of us is doing it wrong.

        • +1

it depends on the customer imo, if you want it traditional style or a modified version geared to a more western/worldly palette. Im not talking msg either.

There is obviously bad versions though were you take shortcuts.

      • +3

aha yeah, if by "best" he meant "worst" then he is absolutely right! :P

pretty much anywhere in Footscray, Victoria Street, or Springvale is better than mekong!!!

    • +4

Gee gee gee, Mekong is the best? Go to ilaughatyou.com.au

The best ones are, one in springvale, called Dakao Hoang (used to be Pho Hung, I think), next to that small family's bakery that I always buy from whenever I went to have dinner/lunch at Dakao Hoang, which was every week…..

The 2nd best is on Victoria Street, Richmond, I have tried 3 places there, the best one seems to be the one close to the Commonwealth Bank, about 3-4 stores down, just before/after the small groceries shop.

But now I am in Perth, if Pho Hung (show you how bad Perth's phos in general) has a store in Perth, I would frequent it on weekly basis…. PERTH PHO SUCKSSSSSSS

  • $1? pho sho i'm down.

  • love some pho but it's out of the way for me (from paris end of the city), :(

  • Do I need the flyer or can I just rock up? I'm willing to skip my uni lecture for this….

  • -4

Pho 54 in Cabramatta is the best pho in the whole wide world period!

Pho Huong Vieng whatever next to the toilets at Sunnybank is the best in Brisbane

Mekong on Swantson St is ok for Melb. Good pho is also in North Richmond and Footscray

    Perth pho sucks

    Hobart pho is the worst

    Followed by Darwin pho

btw its funny how white people think all and any pho tastes good! haha just like how they believe boiled rice stired with peas, egg and ham is the best fried rice! lol

    • I've negative'd you for saying Mekong on Swanston is 'ok'… if that's ok… you must like peas, egg and ham with your fry lice!
      :P

But thumbs up for $1 dollar pho!

  • -2

To all the people arguing about the best place for pho. I've probably had it at 10 different places around melbourne, and they all tasted almost exactly the same lol :P. It's not exactly a complicated dish.

    • +1

you must be a non-asian person

      • +1

        neither do i.
that's why i always look inside - any asian looking customers. if yes, i'll follow them.
        if not, i'll move on.

    • I weep for you.

    • +1

I'd agree. And to cheapskateasian,I consider myself a picky Pho addict. The most important thing, what makes Pho so special, is its soup. In Saigon, all famous Pho restaurants have their own secret recipes (when the owner or main chef makes the soup, all other staff must get out to maintain the secret).

When I came to Melbourne, I quickly realised that most 'famous' Pho restaurants are the same, including Hung Vuong, Tam… at Footscray, Hung at Preston, and Chu The at Richmond. Some are based on South Vietnam taste, some are from the North, but they are mostly 'typical' and a bit boring to my taste.

If you ever come to Saigon, try Pho Le (Nguyen Trai) or Pho Hoa (Pasteur) and you will see the difference instantly. Just stay away from chain stores like 'Pho 24h' because they are just as boring as the ones in Melbourne.

      • +3

Been to HCM. Tried pho in District 1, District 3, and Ben Tanh markets. Strangely enough, the most famous pho joint aka Pho 2000 was the worst.

        Australia pho > vietnam pho

Australia banh mi > Vietnam banh mi

        • +1

True. Australia pho > vietnam pho

I don't understand why pho in Melbourne tastes even better than in Vietnam. I guess it's the generous serving, but then American pho is big but still not that good. I think it is the thick noodle that they use here that goes well with the dish. I think it's uniquely Melbourne style because I was suprised to discover the tiny noodle they serve in Vietnam was the authentic. Was a bit disappointed that I couldn't match a good pho elsewhere but Melbourne.

        • i'd say it would be the quality of the produce (mainly the beef).

        • Pho in Australia is generally better then Pho in vietnam thanks to the excellent meat and ingredients we have. Just because a bowl of Pho is made in Vietnam doesn't mean it will taste better then one made here. They are still made by Vietnamese people only difference is better ingredients we have here.

There is no 'one place is better then the other' imo. Most places are so inconsistent that is hardly ever a fair comparison unless you dedicated your life to judging pho quality.

        • Well it all comes down to personal preference so no point arguing here. I agree that Australian beef and the noodle are very good, but again the soup is the soul of Pho. As said, one of the most interesting about Pho is every famous restaurant has their very own taste of Pho with secret ingredients that can hardly be replicated elsewhere.

Unfortunately 90% of Pho restaurants in Vietnam are just so-so (half of them are well below average) so it may be difficult, even for native ones, to find a decent restaurant to enjoy Pho. Some tips to find a really good one in Saigon:
          - It must be crowded almost all day.
          - It serves Pho and only Pho, nothing else.
          - You can smell the delicious soup instantly the second you walk through the door.
          - Stay away from chain stores like Pho 2000, Pho 24…
          - Pho at most hotels (even 4* and 5*) and food courts sucks.

It's perfectly ok to know only Pho in Melbourne and enjoy it. But once one's exposed to the real Pho with its magic soup, I think it will be really hard to go back.

Somehow this thread got mentioned in a Vietnamese website:

      http://baodatviet.vn/Home/congdongviet/Khau-chien-du-doi-ve-…

      Here's the Google Translate result:

Recently, the site of Australia has emerged Ozbargain an interesting debate about the pho. Here, the members have compared the pho noodles in Australia with other countries, including Vietnam - "origin" of this dish…

      • ahahaha, that is awesome!!!

  • now i finally have a reason to move to melb

  • Awesome, geez. This is cheaper than the $2 packet pho i buy all the time from coles!!

  • Pho An is nothing special, their flavor is so so at best and the price is a ripoff. Try Pho Gia Hoi in Syd CBD or Bankstown for a decent Pho.

BTW, if you like spicy food, try out the spicy beef noodle soup, also a very popular dish from Viet, i prefer it to Pho :)

    • +1

"bun bo hue" is the name of the spicy beef noodle dish, for anyone who wants to look for it.

  • +1

Yum the pho was amazing. Even better is the 10% discount if you miss the 10-11 $1 deal. thats a win by itself.

    • Whats the normal price?

      • +1

normal is 8.50 but with the discount its only like 7 something. its a pretty filling bowl.

        • I reckon I have missed something.
          How do I get a 10% discount ?

  • Wow bargain! :D… too bad i live in brisbane :(

  • pho sho!!

  • Hao Phong in Footscray. Enough said.

    • Hao phong don't serve pho do they? Used to be my favourite place, but quality's gone down over the years.

      • Hao Phong makes pho, but they are better with their rice dishes. Grilled chicken on rice, yum.

  • wish I lived in melbourne!

  • Australia pho > USA pho

had pho in LA, SF, SD, Fresno, Sacrament, Santa Ana, NYC, MN, WI, OK and they all the same. Thin dry noodles as opposed to the fresh thick noodles here in Australia

Also had pho at 2 different places in Wellington, NZ and still,
    Australia pho > NZ pho

    phoreals!!

    • gee man. you've been everywhere, vietnam, america, nz. you're a highrollerasian, you're no cheapskate.

    • I think I'll give it a try.
Do you know what is the name of place or at least where it is located ?
      Thanx.

  • Has anyone been to the "my pho bar" in jindalee brisbane? i heard their soup is legit and they have a pho challenge where if you eat it within 60 mins its free lol

    • Eating a bowl of pho in 60 mins is a challenge? ;)
