hate to admit, but thats a good deal.. only problem is…

    "catch of the day"

and needs adding of more ram and it would be a decent rig i guess..

  • Hmm, was looking for a FULL HD laptop for ages. Glad deleting CoTD after their iFail event, I'm still able to get notified of good deals from OzB :D

You might be lucky to receive it within the 2yr warranty period…

Not sure why they'd bother with a 540M GT. It's really not much of a gaming chip (there's no way you could play any recent games at 1080p) and it's overkill for anything else.

not to be a grammar/spelling nazi but that tat is really bugging the hell out of me.

    • +2

What about the u instead of you?

      That is annoying

      • Hey, spare a thought for the poor missing demonstrative 'this'! No doubt kidnapped & held hostage with the rest of the function words & tenses! :p

These things have 4 ram slots and with 4GB going for around $25 I wouldn't let that put you off. I laid down an extra $75 and now have 16gb ram :-) Throw in an SSD and it is a beast.

Pity about the average video card though.

  • how does this compare to MSY laptops on offer?

    • If you are not looking for a full HD laptop. This deal is pretty bad, not even a bargain.
You can get a laptop with the same or even better specs to msy for the same price or even much less.
And this is cotd we are dealing with.

For anybody buying one of these, just format and reinstall windows as the many ASUS bloatware that is pre installed will bog down your resources. You can always install specific ones you want later.

Other then that a great laptop for the price.

    • I just bought an ASUS, waiting for it to arrive. I'm not too confident about formatting and reinstalling, but which bloatware would you recommend removing?

    • I installed a 'copy' of windows 7 and reduced boot time from 2 mins to 1 min
and also forgot to put the legit serial key in doh

    • Is it enough to uninstall the bloatware, or do you need a fresh copy?

I don't suppose you know if you could use the included OEM license key with any Win 7 Home Premium disc do you? That would be good, instead of having to buy a new license.

      • fresh copy is best but you can do with just uninstalling.

  • 2nd gen Intel?

    • oh and, anyone knows what is the actual model of this laptop? would love to read reviews first before buying :)

It's in the product specs section on cotd. N53SV-SZ959V

    Processor:
    2630 is a 2nd gen i7

    Screen:
the 1080p is a HUGE bonus as most 15.6 screens are the cheap and nasty 1368x720 or whatever strange resolution … a massive portion of the 15.6 laptop's have the same screen from cheap & dodgy manufacturers, so you'll really notice the diff on a full 1080p (that & it's been a long time since i've seen a descently priced lappy with 1080p) …

    Video:
while the 540m isn't mind blowing compared to desktop video card's, it's still a long way better than the 520m (which is what you get on a lot of the <1k 'gaming' laptop's)

you can't really complain about the specs, my toshiba is an entry level 2nd gen i7, with the 520 video (so both are lower than this machine) and mine is held back by the 5200rpm hdd … get this & get the ssd and you've got yourself a respectible gaming laptop for half of the price of some of the other monsters …

as a side note, DONT use the asus onboard software to flash the bios, it fries the laptop, i'm in the process of waiting for a new bios chip to be delivered from the UK (and then i have to figure out how to get it onto the motherboard)

    • Asus is good brand, but note that the i7-2630m was release Q1 of 2011 -> 1 year old.

      Currently most i7 are using 2670QM(released Q4 2011) & new rebadged GT630m(GT640m).

So cheaper price for yesteryear's technology does not equal bargain…

U should get Asus to repair it for you locally. Isn't the Bios chip permanently soldered on motherboard?

      • +2

There may be 3/4 of a year between their release, but the CPUs are basically the same (same architecture, only 200MHz difference in speed), as are the GPUs (the GT630M is a rebadged 540M). Age of release is irrelevant if the architecture is the same.

    • Order yourself a BIOS chip removal tool (assuming you can pop the BIOS out like a desktop motherboard) if you have to do it yourself.

But Asus have global warranties, so surely you can take it to a local repair centre? It should be a warranty claim, given their utility did the damage?!?

  • I always a bit hesitate about the heat problem with this kind of machine with i7 and a gaming video card in it.

    • I've got a Qosmio X770, with i7 and GT560M, and it handles the heat fine. The fans push a lot of air (but also make a bit of noise), but it quiets down a lot when not under heavy load, and actually reduces the power consumption A LOT (down to 20W - 30W, from ~110W). This has the same hybrid graphics, so assume it is the same low power once it drops back to the integrated HD 3000 graphics (which should be enough for HD video).

Just gotta make sure the vents have good airflow. It heats up everything near the output vent.

Got myself one of these as a dedicated live music laptop :-) Bit with 1 minute to spare!

It is probably worth noting that the keyboard on these things is pretty terrible and it is hard to tell from the picture but they have a massive speaker between the screen and keyboard, making them look a bit ugly. I am still very happy with mine (I don't use it for gaming and use external keyboard) but just thought I would mention these 2 things so people are not surprised when they arrive.

    • Read that in reviews too re: keyboard. How is it terrible? Usable still?

      • +1

Yep, totally usable but the keys don't seem to be in the same configuration as most other laptops I have used recently. Best to try enlarge the piccy to see what I mean.

    • That's pretty good too, but I'm looking at 15" (desktop replacement, almost) rather than a smaller sized one.

  • +1

Expired now anyway (as at midday).

  • Looks like it's back on again, this time even cheaper at $899.
    There's also one with i7 2670QM instead of a 2630 at $849 but with a 320gb instead of a 640gb hard drive.
