This looks cheaper, what's the difference ?

Is this loud enough to passive aggressively sharpen your pencil down to a nub?

This took me back to some shuddering child hood memories whilst growing up in Asia.

    Amazon's Choice for "electric sharpener"
    Ok.

I remember pencils in primary school 45yrs ago…lol

  • If you have a thick table this will come off every now and again. Does eat up a lot of pencil when sharpening as it is a very narrow point.

  • Electric is more satisfying.

  • Any electric ones

I bought a similar one for my son around 30 years ago. Now my grandkids use it when we found it in garage last year. The one we got is metal one and got few different holes for different size pencils. It is made in US maybe thats why still going good.

      • I have that one with the suction base instead of the mounting base. Suction base has stopped sucking but the actual sharpener itself is still awesome. Does sharpen to a fine point and chew up a fair bit of pencil as others have said, though.

        • Yeah, I also have one with suction mount and have same issue with it. Suction lasts only for sharpening pencil one time.

Another thing I noticed that it is bit hard for kids in primary school as you have to hold the pencil bit tightly to prevent rotation.

X-acto has double helical blades so bit longer life.

Derwent has pencil grip and can be used without clamping as your one hand is free to hold the sharpener.

  • What’s wrong with a penknife?

A penknife will not fit in the little hole

Victorinox at $6 you are better off with that

I had a similar one and I see in the Amazon reviews like in mine the teeth in this will leave little bite marks in your pencils like my old one. According to that review Dahle 133 and Staedtler Mars have rubberised claws and don’t do this…

    • Jumping down this rabbit hole Dahle 133 seems to be a good choice only ~25 on Amazon

    • Yup, it wrecks your pencils. Absolute deal breaker.

Ahhh so that's how Mr Wick keeps his pencils sharp…

Didn't even know I needed a pencil sharpener but looks like I have to buy one now! No choice really haha

Is this compatible with Apple Pencil?

Are these sort of sharpeners ok for soft core colouring pencils like Prismacolor etc?

  • This is good but be aware it sharpens to a very long thin point - great for shading, but very fragile tips.
