Buying First Electric Mountain Bike

Hi guys,

I'm new to bike stuffs and looking to get electric mountain bike.
Mainly for commuting to work and casual ride on trails.
Budget is around 2k.

Looking around and can see a few options available:

Just want to get opinions or are there better options?
Thanks

  • 29kg weight big oof
That's like twice the weight of my mountain bike.

Ideally neither would be my option simply due to the really average part quality (you're paying for a $600-700 bike with $1200 worth of electrical componentry.) The cost price on a bike such as this would be around the $1200-$1300 mark.

If you held a gun to my head maybe the NCM as it has a greater gear range (the coyote is a 1X)

Honestly though right now $3k is the minimum i'd be spending on a electric bike given the componentry they compromise on to get to the $2000 mark.

The Suntour suspension they've specced is really cheap and not great, particularly for a 29kg bike
The brakes are pretty trash and would struggle on the best of days pulling the bike up.

    • Good point. Wasn't thinking about the weight.

Do you have any recommendation for a 3k bike?
What is a good component should I look for ?

  • -1

awesome, if you're not cheating, you're not trying. lol

  • I'd go for one of these

    if you can get stock.
Frame's far better quality and would shave at least 3-4kg off the weight i'd imagine.
Although the brakes are similar i'd much rather go with a brand that specs decent electronics and frames.

  • Is it for a REGULAR commute? You can get away with cheap stuff in bicycles if it is just an occasional weekend ride on a trail, but not if you are going to be using it as regular transport.

For an e-bike, like any bicycle, I'd pay more attention to the groupset (basically the drive train plus brakes) than anything else. That will determine durability, maintenance and comfort. Even cheap electrical components are much more reliable than mechanical elements, so the mechanical is where quality pays.

Hub motors are generally better than wheel motors (although more expensive) because you can use your gears to control needed torque. Other than that, though, I agree you do need to watch the weight. Oh, and disc brakes are far better than caliper ones, for roughly the same reasons they are better in cars.

    • I think you mean mid drive is better than a hub (wheel) drive. Hub motor is typically the motor in the centre of the wheel.

  • Hope to use as much as possible depending on the weather. And some occasions on trails.

  • Those will be OK for commuting and terrible on trails.

They are both cheap bikes with e-bits. If you want to ride off road you need a mid-drive bike or one wheel will be too heavy and make handling horrible. I wouldn’t be surprised if those bikes also have a sticker on them saying they aren’t suited for off road use.

You also really want decent suspension (adjustable air suspension)to use off road.

TBH stick with the e-bike for commuting and pick up a second hand hardtail Mountainbike that originally cost around $1500. Should be able to find a good one for $500-$800.

    • Care to share a link or two please?

      • Link for what? Second hand bikes? Just look in your local area, then google the model you spy to get the RRP

      • Facebook swap groups on facebook marketplace, that's the place for 2nd hand bikes!!!

  • This is the best buy in your budget IMO

For a first mountain bike, it's excellent. You won't notice the shortcomings. I had the exact same one and it never skipped a beat. Of course after a few years I had to upgrade because I naturally got a lot better, but it served me very well.
