Ghosted after I Got The Job at Kmart

Last month I applied and got accepted in Kmart (Western Australia) for a casual retail job.

I was told to do online modules and ring the store regarding orientation. After I completed the tasks and rang the store I was told I would receive information in a few days. However, they never sent me anything and I kept calling only for them to say they will deliver information but they never did.

Last week I called and the person answering the phone said that emails will be sent by the 16th which was false. I also left a voicemail, texts to the line manager who never responded. Finally this week I called twice only to be told to leave my name and phone number but they never got back to me.

Did anyone else have a similar experience or offer any insight into this situation?

Only true for 50% of the population ; )

  • Hi,

Did you get a Letter or E-mail confirming your appointment?

    • I signed the job contract.

If you signed the contract then ring head office HR directly and see what they have to say. Some store staff are just morons and wouldn't give a flying toss about a casual who hasn't even started yet.

Start looking for a job elsewhere .. if they are this organised you'd be better off unemployed.

Anything incriminating on your social media profiles?

    • Certainly not, I am very vigilant in keeping my social media accounts as plain as possible.

In my experience working with young people and employers such as KMart, they prefer to roster younger kids for casual shifts in the first instance. So while you might have done everything to be employed by the company, the store manager or similar might not have you as a priority, depending on your age. However in this time of workforce crisis I’d imagine they’d be short staffed and looking to give shifts to whoever they could. Unless the store manager is off sick? Can you actually attend the store in person and ask to speak with the relevant manager?

If I go to somewhere like Kmart or Big W and I am looking for something specific, or at least not a broad category, I will ask one of the older staff every time (assuming I can get one).

Broad generalisation I know, but more often than not I will have the very young staff tell me they think it is in that section, and point over somewhere, while the older staff will not only know where it is, but how many they have in stock, how often they get restocked and what angle the items are on the shelf.

  • guess they were looking for soemone
then omicron hit (less in wa but would expect consumer confidence lower everyhwere) then Jan came and business slow so they didn't need casuals

also half year results for Kmart was bad, maybe head office ordered for reduce casuals (cost more)

Who is Jan and what does she have to do with KMart?

  • I'd say they are still deciding whether they need you as a worker or not. This has happened to me once. I got a position at Woolworths and didn't have shifts in my department for months. I had four initial shifts where everything seemed okay, but after that nothing. Four months later, I had three casual shifts at another store two hours away. After another four months of nothing, I got changed to a nightfiller and had constant casual work for seven years. I'm guessing they had to hire me for quotas, but didn't have enough budget to roster me if that makes sense.

    • Woolworths is a total mess honestly man. But certainly different people different managers, different stores etc. have different views

Walk in and start working, the ol' Costanza trick

    • Oye boi search up Too Apree on youtube

    • Be sure to take the small office if they ask

  • If that was me I'd be contacting tha same as suggested above like the Kmart employee's helpline number or may be Wesfarmers employee's number or something similar. ask them what the heck is going on? Give them screenshots of the outcome of your job application, and see their reaction towards it.

Honestly speaking I'd seriously angry at that line manager or store (if they were tha one's who actually sent the email, and afterwards changed their mind and decided to change your employment outcome or whatever instead of leaving ya on your own).

I THINK I once received a call from coles store about my employment application, I ended up calling that store from google number and asked them I got a call back from you guys or not? I told them i recently applied a job in their store, She said may be store might have called me, and redirected phone to someone else who set up a time for interview.

Somehow managed to get interview done, rejected outcome received in their online process before the interview even done. Yet still did the interview. Got not a single response from them since that ages ago. Nor I am still sure whether that store actually called me or was it some other number that called me. I could see the number that time.

That's what disposable ghost accounts are for…

  • Maybe they don't like you and hope you will go away, but they don't want unions to get involved

  • One would think the issue is most likely because even though we are not technically in lockdown, spending is still at low levels compared to two years ago. Not much spending = no need to hire new people.

  • Contact FWA (Fair Work Australia).
    https://www.fairwork.gov.au/starting-employment/before-start…

Possible the people you are telephoning are on leave with Covid-19 Quarantine or that the Store has placed a freeze on new employees?

Maybe go in to the store with your paperwork and ask for the Store Manager.
Ask if you can set up a time to discuss your start date and Tax File Number and provide Bank Details for pay office.

Keep a record of names, places, what was said and agreed to and by who.

  • I would nearly say hr says you've got the job but other casuals the store already has are now filling those extra hours as the store/shift manager already knows what sort of workers they are and dont want the hassle of supervising a neebie. I've seen this happen before in other types of businesses.

  • Happened to me when i started at coles years ago, the manager was on leave and i was left in limbo for 3 months. So its not unusual but annoying as you get no benefit from this
