JS Wright & Sons have been grading willow for a long time. It's probably just made its way into the mass marketing some time in the 30 years since you last owned a bat.
Somewhere around 80% of the world's pro bats have willow from JS Wright & Sons.
Gray nicolls grading in my opinion is loose. I have seen some ordinary grade 1 bats (both appearance and performance)
