  • I price matched this at OW from a Bing lee special last week for $180
$190 is still great if you after a small android tablet.

    • +1

Bought mine a few days ago from Amazon. How are you finding it? Is it as slow as everyone says it is?

      • +2

Got these for the same price for the kids at Christmas. I was surprised how quick they are.. Kids are using Netflix, YouTube, minecraft and little games without any issues.
Battery life is quite impressive as well.

I'd recommend. Good reviews on YouTube as well.

      • +5

Had it for a while, too slow, ended up selling it on Facebook. No multitasking, couldn't handle kids apps like Reading Eggs.

        • +4

          Opposite experience from Nils…

      • It works pretty well. It does slightly lag occasionally when opening up different apps etc.. But I have found this with most androids I use?

Watching Netflix on it looked great.

I just don't like the interface much..

      • I have two of these for my kids for the past year or so, and they worked well enough.

Seems to handle the kids leaving open 20+ apps most of the time, but periodically go and clear all apps as the youngest forgets to do this. They probably use it 70% of the time for kids youtube.

Haven't had any real performance issues or issues in general so would buy again.

      • +1

My mother got one and yes they are annoyingly slow.
Especially when switching between apps, updating etc.

      • We have three of these for our kids. They have youtube running literally all day (though they tend to just leave it running and play with something else) and amazingly the battery will hold out for a full day - I have a 6 port charger from a previous deal and plug them in each night ready for the next day - I was surprised to discover they support fast charging too.
One of them is used by a 3yo who will download EVERY SINGLE APP from every ad and despite the storage being completely full, it's still responsive and handles his games well - he obviously never closes them all either, always 10+ on the go.

Don't expect snapdragon performance or anything, it is a sub $200 tablet afterall but for a toddler or just someone using a few apps at a time, it's more than good enough.

        • +3

Giving kids open slather to all apps and and youtube freaks me out, do you use parental controls/ google family?

          • @Dollarsandsense: Yep, YouTube Kids is all they get (which does my head in as they keep pressing the settings button and getting stuck). They don't know how to navigate the play store, only press into the ad which goes straight to the game that they then download. We routinely check to make sure there's nothing sinister installed and all ads in their games (hotwheels, marble run, Thomas the tank, Peppa pig, etc.) are 'G rated'

      • Even though it was slow, which I knew before buying, it was the bad screen resolution which made me sell it. There just isnt any 8" tablet with decent resolution out there.

    • Bing Lee has $10 shipping, so same price for those not in Sydney

  • +3

OK price, but spec is a bit too low. But, again, there aren't many choices for 8 inch android tablets…

    • +1

The lack of decent smaller tablets is annoying. Even the latest MiPad is a biggun.

    • Its going to be expensive but the Lenovo Legion Y700 looks promising

  • +3

3GB of RAM. Sounds like built to fail.
Maybe would work for web browsing.
Apps these days once updated require more and more RAM to run.

    • +4

Dunno what games apart from fast action need more than 3gb on Android

      • +1

        Try Libby app.
Works fine on my phone with 8GB Ram. Run so slow on my 4GB RAM iPad to the point I felt like living in the future by going back to the paper.

        • +4

8gb for an e-Reader app?? Sounds like it isn't optimised.

          • @beebul: They know you have no choice if you want to get ebooks out from your library for free so they don't need to care.

    • +1

Its a kids / netflix tablet

    • Lol this sounds like 2013 specs

  • +2

I bought one of these purely to control my smart home. Recently finished building a home theater and have this magnetically attached to the wall next to the door to activate scenes etc. Battery lasts at least two-three weeks using it this way. Perfect for our use and saved hard wiring anything.

    • +2

Could you post a photo? If like to hard wire one really, but this might be ok.

      • +1

also interested in using the Tab A7 for controlling home assistant. Would love to see photos.

        • +2

Just imagine the tab A 7 Lite on the wall cleanly at your desired hight.

You won't see anything else as magnet will be stuck on wall directly behind tablet

thin and reasonably flush to the wall, maybe 3mm thick or so.

          • @ozhunter68: How do you manage the charging?

            • +1

@Sunny84: Simple, I imagine he just takes it off the wall when not in use every 10 days or so

( as needed ), plugs it in to a charger, charge it, and return, done. Not such a big deal,

even if it accidentally goes flat occassionally.

What app do you use? And do you have a link to the mount you used?

  • is the non lite version much better? Need to replace mums old 10" Tab

  • +6

    $50 for the specs
    $150 for the marketing

  • -1

omg 3 gigs ram! my grand ma can run faster than 3 gigs ram!

  • +1

Anyone can recommend good and better spec 8 inch android tablet?

    • +2

Don't think there is a market in 2022 for a decent 7-8 inch tablets considering you can get a bunch of 6-7 inch phones that have 4g-5g at multiple price points.

      • any recommendation for 7inch phone at this price?

        • +2

You have to wait for sale thou. Some phones might be network locked, for example to Telstra, or you intended to use the phone as a tablet then it doesn't really matter.

Telstra Nokia C30 as low as $99 very recently. I think cheapest now is ~$140

The cheapest phone already has performance comparable to the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite. Might be faster or slower than the tablet depending on the benchmark tested.

          Telstra Nokia G20 ~$150

          Xiaomi Redmi 10 6.5" 4GB/64GB ~$210 recently

          Vivo Y33s ~$230.

    • Can recommend this (much better) Samsung 8-in, SM-P205, with better screen, speed, 4G phone, s-pen (v.useful), etc: https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_tab_a_8_0_&s_pen(2019)-9651.php … but had to import it from Asia as Samsung doesn't sell it directly?

      • Yes. I owned this. Stuttered a bit. I would think it would be similar performance with the one posted here. Yes, it was a good device. But, 32GB is getting too small since apps are getting bigger. Thank you for the suggestion.

    • Matepad m6? It's shocking how there's not even mid range 8" android tablets.

Lenovo is looking to release sd888 tablet soonish if you're not in a hurry

  • +1

Apparently you can't save apps or app data to SD so 32gb is no good for me, the OS takes up nearly half of that.

    • +1

I thought they fixed that with an update?

      • +3

Yes. Samsung added the option to move store apps to the SD card on the New Samsung Tab A7 and A7 Lite. Which is a game changer if you're running out of space on the internal storage. Although not all Samsung devices support this feature and not all apps can be moved.

      • If it has been fixed then that is good news, crazy not to offer that feature originally on a tablet with small storage.

  • +2

they're always fine at start- slow down pretty noticeably after few months / updates

  • So, based on everyone's comment, is there a recommended version that is under $300 or alternative are the Tab S6 or Tab S7 range?

  • Good for kids or someone on a very limited budget. But since I got a tab s4 and now tab s6 I find them way too slow for my liking. I used to own a basic one years ago and thought it was great until I got a upgrade. If you've used a top of the line tablet before, you'll most likely hate these cheap ones

  • I was in the market for a cheap tablet and was looking at these. Had a play at JB and found them quite slow. Luckily found a brand new 64gb iPad Mini 5 instead for $210 instead on ebay. Couldn't be happier. Yes, it doesn't come with Warranty but it is yet to stutter for my use case. I would honestly skip this and look for other sources or up the price bracket slightly for better versions (Tab S4, S6 lite etc.).

    • The only good 8 inch tablet is probably iPad minis (5&6). But, I really want Whatsapp. I don't know why Facebook keeps Whatsapp for iPad from happening. Probably, they are afraid it would cannibalize their Facebook messenger

      • +1

        Have you tried this? web.whatsapp.com

  • +4

I bought one of these thinking that its size would make it perfect to read e-magazines/e-books via Libby.
Ended up selling it on FB, as it was super-slow (even after removing Samsung bloatware) and the screen resolution sucked.

I bought a used 2in1 HP Chromebook with 8gb RAM for $300 for the same purpose instead and - even though the 12-inch screen can be a bit big when used in tablet mode - the experience is like night and day in terms of flexibility, horsepower and sheer usability.

As others have pointed out, the 8-9inch tablet options on Android are all very disappointing at the moment.

    • +2

I agree the screen resolution sucks

  • +4

Bad value - pay $40 more and get the $239 Lenovo Tab M10 HD 2nd Gen (TB-X306F) with 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, 10.1" screen and more efficient P22T SoC.

    • +2

Only problem either 1 or no updates with the Lenovo, where as this should get 3 android version updates plus more security updates…

      • +2

Treble GSI ROM's are the way to go with the TB-X306F and TB-X606F - you can already run Android 12 and also avoid the Lenovo crapware

      • +1

"brad1601" Do you really see this budget model getting 3 Android updates + more security updates?

Is that not reserved for their mid range and flagship models only? I could be wrong for this specific unit.

    • Netflix 1080p?

      • Be ok just remember:

        Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite:

        • 8.7-inch HD Ready - 1340x800 pixels (179 ppi density) WXGA+ screen.
        • Video Playing Resolution FHD 1920x1080 @ 30fps
        • Audio Stereo.

        Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 (2021):

        • 10.4-inch Full HD - 2000x1200 pixels (224 ppi density) WUXGA+screen.
        • Video Playing Resolution FHD 1920x1080 @ 60fps
        • Audio Quad - Dolby Atmos.
        • I think they are asking whether the Lenovo supports Netflix 1080p

  • Some mixed reviews here. Want to use it for ebooks, occasional netflix and Web browsing. Will it get the job done?

    • +2

That's exactly what I use mine for. It's fine.
But I'm not one to chase the latest and best.
I just want functionality and affordability which this does ok for me.

    • I would go for the lenovo xiaoxin pad plus, or pad pro (for the OLED screen)

      The performance difference is significant.

      https://gadgetversus.com/processor/mediatek-mt8768-vs-qualco…

If it really is only for ebooks and YouTube, I suppose it would be fine, a kindle has far less performance. But it's still $200, that's a fair bit of money to spend on something you might be disappointed with

  • +1

I have the non-lite version and I find it fairly slow. Its fine to take on holidays and watch a movie on, but I wouldn't buy this for day to day office work like taking meeting notes and emails.

  • I'm not too well versed with the current state of android tablets, however my Lenovo Tab 3 P8 plus is currently annoying me to bits. Every so often, it will take ages to wake up into a usable state. Almost like it's struggling. If it weren't for this, it's still doing it's job.

At any rate, would this be an upgrade or would it be just more of the same. Also, while I'm asking, may I ask how it will fare against a Lenovo Tab P11 which seems to have a similar price point?

    • Lenovo P11 will definitely beat this turtle…

  • Bought this last week for $240 :-(.

Mainly for kid to watch his poems and videos.
