Pretty lightweight payload on this model, but I like Manfrottos that I have had in the past.

I have this one and although I like the functionality, one of the locking pins has broken in one leg - quite annoying given it has only had light use! Still trying to see if I can do a dodgy repair job myself.

    • That's the problem with them. I have one too. Served well enough for years, but when the locking mechanisms fail as they do, replacements can't be sourced locally. If parts/kits could be sourced from the manufacturer, no doubt the cost of repair would just triage replacement vs repair.

Agreed! It's annoying to throw something out with a relatively minor problem.

        • Mine is still in service -held together with that ubiquitous mend all duct tape, but it is just as you say.

wonder if there are any deals for carbon tripods…

Great little tripod. Had one last 10+ years. Eventually the locking clasps broke on the legs one by one & due to the way it locks & how thin the plastic is that houses the pin, no glue would fix it sadly. If I had access to a 3D printer at the time, it might have worked perhaps. Very temped to get another one…

    • +1

Good idea about a 3d printed part. It looks like someone has already designed a fix: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:37672

      • Do you think 3D printing is childsplay? :s

        • Well I've done a fair bit myself already…

      • Nice! Wish I hadn't got rid of mine now. 😂

Couldn't resist. I just bit the bullet to replace my original with broken clamps. That Manfrotto original will now be my source of scavenged clamps for future repairs if required. Although they were a lot dearer back then, I've had sterling service from the first for more than a decade, so can't really complain. Regular street @ Ted's is just under the $100 free shipping threshold making the Amazon PRIME deal particularly sweet at $78.38 inc shipping, and with 4% Cashrewards even sweeter. Grabbed the discounted Manfrotto smartphone holder for $15.16 from Amazon as well. Although it appears the Compact Action no longer comes with the 785PL QR Plate included any more? Will scavenge that from its predecessor too. Thanks for the heads up OP.

        Glad it helped! :)

These can't be beaten for a good brand name, portability at a low price. Having used them for years for news and journalism work, it's important to understand its limitations. Specifically, tilting and panning are free rather than on a track, so video results depends on how steady your grip is and when you lock it off, the shot tends to drift a little.

For static shots, however, it's terrific. All the locking mechanisms on the legs can be undone rapidly with one hand and similarly when packing away, you can pretty much close up all locks with one hand movement for each leg.

  • Stupid question: Can I hook my phone to the tripod? Instead of camera
