Want to cut lawn with a Scythe/Sickle

Are you sure? It's bloody hard work, especially on the back.

If it's a small area get the cheapest. If a big area get the best, Spear & Jackson would be my recommendation.

    • Yeah, my dogs fight using a lawn mower so I have to hire someone to do the lawn while I walk them. I am guessing they won't fight if I use this since there is no loud motor so I will save heaps.
Thanks will try the Spear and Jackson.

          Tie them up?

        Scythe + dogs running around…

Good luck with that while you're swinging it around

          My thoughts exactly.
Pup: "Look owner is swinging a shiny new toy".
Nekt minut - Vet: "That'll be about $$$$ to patch Pup up."

        • I tried putting them behind separate gates, but because of the noise they bark nonstop and then after mowing and the mower is out of sight they fight when they are put back in the yard.

@ValuexHunter: There sound like more issues than just mowing with them both…

          • @ValuexHunter: It sounds like you need some training and discipline for their owner

You could use a push lawn mower? It's hard work but there's no motor.

        • Nah .. the dog will start fornicating

Do you know how to sharpen a blade?

    • I was shown how at TAFE for commercial cookery though we never actually practiced it.
If it turns out bad my local butcher does sharpening so I could ask them if they will do it.

Look I've got no experience using a scythe personally but I think you'll need to sharpen the blade as you go. This site says - "In the field a sharpening stone is used to sharpen the blade edge, often as frequently as every 5 minutes, to keep the blade sharp and cutting well."

Not impossible to learn but if you're just doing it for the novelty of mowing your lawn like you're the grim reaper then it's probably not worth it.

      This^^

or just pay the local teenager mowing lawns to do it… scythe would be beyond my last option and would leave a shit finish.

Ah, the forums that just keep giving.

I think you'll find a scythe only works on grass that is quite long

Maybe better off with a beard trimmer… even cut that way

    1. The second one you linked to is the right one - see vid for how to use: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9VtodSwAbY The other two are for killing zombies maybe.

    2. The advantage is that you can leave the grass long and then cut it every few months. Only negative is if you have issue with just leaving it there - just rake it up and put in the compost or just leave it on the ground to decompose

    3. It's not that slow if you have the right tool and use the right technique.

PS: Remember to post a vid of you in action.

If you're going to buy it, make sure you get all the necessary gear to go along with it.
For instance, someone above mentioned a sharpener.

Where to buy a good one?

Why not do it properly and make your own?

To make a scythe from scratch, you must first invent the universe
