DT 880s at not a bad price, free shipping with prime. Lowest on camelcamelcamel is about ~$220 AUD so not too close to that but better than the normal $290-300.

X2 would have more bass and highs. The DT880 is neutral-bright.
Vlose but the Fidelio is better.
A lot of people don't seem to like the sound signature on Beyers and say it's a bit harsh, these would also need an amp where the X2s don't
DT 990 Pro 250ohm available for $205 (also Amazon UK stock)

That's a damn crazy price, might just get another pair as a backup.
It is around $210 everywhere. Not sure why you are excited for 990 Pro

Just linking it as a comparison since I think it's better than the 880 and cheaper too. I wouldn't go posting it as a deal although saving $5 and eligible for prime shipping is good imho.
Same price at umart.
I have the T70 from BeyerDynamic. These look very similar to the T70s I have except they are open back. If the headband that is used hasn't been improved then I would be a bit dissapointed. The clamp pressure is so loose, and cause of that a lot of the sound quality especially around bass and treble is lost.
But from the photos the headband does look like its been improve with the metal clips. Maybe that solved the issue.
The lowest would be when I got mine 600ohms version from Amazon Germany a few years ago, was under $200 and i think it was same price for all DT880 variants.
Given the weaker aussie dollar and inflation I would say this is not a worse deal.
I have these DT880s and did extensive research. I wanted somthing for music production and FPS gaming. I'm very happy with them. I paired them with a modmic usb microphone and it's a great set up.
Dt880 = flat/neutral response, better for music production.
Dt990 = slight 'v shape' frequency response. High frequencies are harsh to some people. Good for FPS and analytical music listening if you are ok with the high frequencies. People like these for FPS gaming due to their high frequencies which means you can hear footsteps easier.
Dt770 = classic 'v shape' with more boosted lows and highs than the 990 but less people complain about 'harsh highs'. If your main use is music listening, particularly if you like bass, then these are the way out of the 3 models listed. I've heard these are buttery goodness for hip hop listening.
I hope that helps.
When I looked into Beyerdynamic headphones, I read basically the same things online that Sandaz had described. However, I found out that I could try them out at a music store with their studio setup (Store DJ, for reference). As such, I went in to try the DT 770 Pro/X and DT990 Pro/X - unfortunately, I don't think they stock the DT 880.
I was completely shocked at how muddy and overpowering the bass was for the DT 770 Pro. The DT 770 Pro X didn't suffer as much from that, but it was still not very pleasant to my ears. Didn't have a problem with any harshness though.
DT 990 Pro ended up being my favourite out of the bunch. Adequate bass with rich vocals, and surprisingly no real complaints with treble peaks. Apart from the detachable cable, the DT 990 Pro X didn't feel like a worthwhile step-up to me.
Headphone choice is 100% subjective and whilst it's imperative to read reviews/opinions, I would strongly recommend that you try pairs that you're interested in (if possible).
I wish I'd had the chance to listen to them all in store first but I purchased in peak Melbourne lockdown. I was certainly advised to, but had to take the punt. As you said, headphones can be very person and use-case specific.
BTW for those interested in ohms and amps, I'm driving my 250 ohm DT880 straight out of a Gigabyte 570x aorus elite motherboard and its fine. They are loud at half volume and the detail is very nice to the point of hearing new things in songs I've listened to for ages. I have a pre-amp on the way to test out still though.
These need an amp to get anywhere near their potential.
Fidelio is the more cost efficient option as they will sound better without an amp….but they aren't as good as a properly powered DT880.Yeah this should be in the main post. Don't buy these without having an amp.
Yes my DT880 600ohm sounds thin when drive by my ibasso dx90 player directly, the ibasso has a sort of reasonable amp with it but not quite up the the level of a good headphone amp.
My headphone amp is quite a cheap one, nuforce, it's a-class and it runs hot, but it gives the DT880 a much fuller sound, the improvement for with amp/without amp is a lot more prominent than my more expensive AKG K812.
The DT880 is also more comfortable than my K812, it may be the most comfortable headphone I have owned, although it looks cheap with the plastic.
How they compare to Philips Fidelio X2HR/00?
