These dual drives are back on sale. Great value for a drive with both USB-A and USB-C, even if it isn't the fastest. Awesome for phone backup with the SanDisk Memory Zone App. Also great for transfers between USB-C only tablets, phones and Chromebooks and PC's

Common complaints are that the USB can retract back into its shell is tight ports, so holding the slider on the side maybe required on insertion. These drives also run hotter than your standard plastic drives. I agree with the comments below, but also have not faced any issues yet with the heat yet.

About This Item

  • Designed specifically for next-generation devices with the new USB Type-C port. The reversible connector has a symmetric design, so that it’s always right-side up, making it easy and fast to plug in.
  • High-speed (lol) USB 3.1 performance of up to 150MB/s means you spend less time waiting to transfer your photos, videos, songs, and other files between devices.
  • With dual connectors, the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive USB Type-C lets you free up space on your smartphone or tablet, or transfer files between multiple devices, whether it has a USB Type-C port or the traditional USB Type-A port.
  • SanDisk Memory Zone app for file management available from the Google Play™ store. The App lets you view, access, and back up all the files from your phone's memory in one location. It can also automatically move files from your device to your drive to free up space.

Here's an alt 128gb dual end drive with a better mechanism for almost the same price. 64GB is marginally more expensive from this type.

Where's the male end for USB-A? (ed: does it just push through the body?)

      • +3

The body is the USB-A, look at the third picture on Amazon

        • +2

Haha, just beat me to it.

Yes, also look at the short video.

This looks like an improved design.

        • +3

          Nifty, thanks.

Got one thanks. The design is definitely better for me

and following this line of thinking, I believe the luxe version is the latest iteration and at a similar price for 64GB

      https://www.amazon.com.au/SanDisk-64GB-Ultra-Drive-Type-C/dp…

EDIT: looks to be a metal case design, so should be better for heat dissipation

      • +2

I have both and it has their quirks.

The luxe version can sustain higher speeds for a while longer but gets hoooot.
The plastic version can't sustain higher speeds but you can handle it without cooking your hand.

A good challenge is to see if you can touch the luxe version on the inside of your arm after an hour.

      • Did you read reviews?

        • +1

yep - hence the comment about the heat dissipation (but as wwwsam commented, perhaps too much so)

seems to be WD's way of managing the heat 'problem' - wouldn't surprise me if the metal cased SDDDC4 has same internals as the older plastic case SDDDC3

          • +1

@HeXa: I've taken apart the plastic and the Luxe versions and they're both similarly marked and physically identical.

I don't have them in same capacities so cannot say for certain but you could assume they're the same.

      • Thanks for sharing this, just got the 64GB!

    • You should post this as a separate deal. I kinda like this design and am interested to see if it runs cooler and since I already have 20 odd USB's, what's another one to the collection. Cheers

    • +1

its gone up to $28.90 now

    • Bought one. Thanks!

  • +2

Got this from previous deal, becomes hot within 1 min of transfer, not sure if that's expected.

Had one of the micro USB versions of this. Unsure if they have considerably improved the design/durability, but I had it attached to my keys and the entire case/mechanism crumbled away within a year. Funny enough I still have the actual USB which is incredibly durable but it just looks like a USB A plug with a micro USB connector protruding from it.

I would definitely go with the one @Koffee mentioned above as I'm sure that would be much more durable.

My only complain is that those are running slower than most usb 3.1 key…

    • +2

It seems all dual prices in this price range run slow. I think there is a newer version (this is 2017 design), but I think it's still USB 3.2 Gen 1, which is much the same

      • Why would you need Gen 2 on USB drive? Gen 1 theoretically can do 500MB/sec but you'll struggle to find USB drive that can go that fast even for reading. Interface is not the bottleneck here.

        • +3

          Transfer speed.
USB 3.2 Gen 1 5Gb/s (Use to be called USB 3.0)
USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gb/s (Use to be called USB 3.1)

  • Bought one. Thanks

  • +1

Cheers. My wife has wanted one of these for ages since she liked mine. So brought a couple.

    • +3

      A couple got a couple

      • No pun intended.

    Any deal for apple products

  • what size makes a good boot drive? is 16GB enough? or 32GB?

    • +3

If it's for windows 16GB is fine. It's only a few extra $$$ for 32gb if you have any other future plans to use it for another project

      • +1

Yep …32 GB is the old FAT max size so recognised by most systems ….these are ok for occasional boot, installs but compared to SSD muchhhh slower , and not much cache in these , but read speed is higher than write speed, if it becomes daily boot device …..also system write backs would be slow.

  • +1

What actually speeds are we getting with USB-C?

    • +1

From an old post of mine. This review covers your question and also compares the Ultra (Budget) with Extreme Pro (Top end). The guy goes into alot of detail

  • +1

These are great for mobiles coming out with no sdcard slots,.. which is starting to be the trend or this which is more compact especially if your coming from a mobile that had a sdcard slot to one that doesn't,.. very small easy to carry in pocket👍😁
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/USB-3-1-Type-C-USB-C-to-Micro-SD…

  • What's the use case for having one of these

    • to plug into a device that only has a C port. But can also use on devices that don't have a C port.

    • What lostn said + you could say move items from your USB-C only chromebook and plug the stick into your say work PC USB-A

The USB-C also is great to plug into your phone to do backup / restore all your items and come with free software to do so
