If you increase the RAM to 16GB the price is $854.10 delivered

If you wish to compare the performance of the AMD, Zen 2 based, R5 5500U to the Intel i5 1135G7 you can refer to Passmark. The AMD R5 5500U will have better multi-core performance compared to the i5 because it has 6 cores vs the 4 cores of the i5.

If you want to know how the AMD Radeon Vega iGPU performs in gaming, you can refer to this YouTube review if required of a similar spec IdeaPad 3.

  • 16 GB option.. You mean 4+16?

    • +3

If you select 8GB soldered, it automatically adds an 8GB SO-DIMM from my experience in the configurator.

  • this seems better spec than the $700 HP deal from HN ?

    • +2

The Vega 7 in the Lenovo is about 25-30% faster for some 1080p gaming.

    • +1

If you're doing simple office work (email, word, etc.) then saving the $70 on the HP is probably worth it, or if you dont have edu or prefer brick and mortar.

This lenovo is better value if you're going to be doing some light gaming to use the iGPU or doing more compute-intensive stuff (photoshop, video stuff, data or other processing/programming) but if that's the case do go for a 16gb laptop (e.g. get the upgrade on this).

    • +1

The maim advantage is that the additional 2 cores in the AMD Ryzen based Lenovo system will provide some breathing room for applications. If the 4 cores in Intel based HP get bogged down you will notice it.

  • It's showing $829 to me. How did you get the additional discount?

    • You need to apply the discount code

      • Where's the discount code? I can't see it here and it doesn't appear to be in any of my lenovo edu emails
edit: Nevermind, I see it… wow I'm blind.

  • The SSD is too small.

    • +1

Just means you will be managing disk space almost from day one. Not ideal.

Minimum 16GB on any PC in 2022.

    • The SSD can be upgraded via the Lenovo configurator or you can DIY

  • Is the SSD replaceable in this model?

    • +1

Yes refer to the YouTube video I posted in the OP if you want to DIY. You can also upgrade it on the Lenovo website prior to checkout.

  • are these fairly lightweight?

    • +1

Screen resolution alone would make me say no all day long.

    • +2

Your post has a slower CPU, like the HP deal. Its also 10th gen Intel, which is even slower.Additionally it has a lower resolution screen compared to this deal.

  • Is this good for students or is it way more than enough?

I have a Lenovo duet two in one Chromebook and it is slow as hell.

    • +1

It's more then enough for students in terms of computer processing power. Your duet would either have a ARM based or Intel Celeron CPU, which the 5500u would easily blow away in terms of performance.

If you compare the AMD R5 5500U to the Celeron N4020 in one of the Lenovo Duets:

The AMD 5500U scores over 13269

      The Intel Celeron scores 1595

      • Nice, been shopping around and I like the price but I realised it's not a 2in1. Keep shopping…

        • If you need a 2in1 with a good CPU and battery life, you would be looking at $900 to just over 1k at the moment from the Lenovo Edu store depending on the configuration.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/671808

        • Do high school students need a 2in1?
Unless your school tells you specifically then I'd assume not.
2in1s tend to be bulkier, heavier, more expensive or much lower spec for similar money.

          • @Phoebus: really? I just like rotation between tablet and laptop.

          • @Phoebus: Makes sense that for 2in1, one needs to compensate over the other. and good specs would be losing

How much does this cost at retail usually?

JB are selling similar kinds for pretty cheap like $500 off.

With this, I like how there's selectable memory.

Super confused with the numbering. I thought Ryzen 7 is the latest version but 5 is better

    • +1

The Ryzen 7 3700u CPU in the deal you posted is two generations old.

      AMD mobile CPU generations

3000 series mobile is from 2019
4000 series mobile is from 2020
5000 series mobile is from 2021

There has been a significant performance jump from 3000 to 4000/5000 series mobile AMD CPUs.

      • Is this for a limited time offer only?

  • No education email 😔

  • what is the "Extra Storage Holder" option for? it states "HDD Update It Yourself Kit (Only Single SSD)" is this to add a second SSD or just tools to open the laptop?

anyone know how to be sure an SSD will fit, should i be searching for a specific SSD?

    • i think it means you can add a 2.5" drive

  • good deal. too bad no edu access.

    • See my comment above for a similar unit if you don't have edu access

      • i'm not too sure if the hp is on par with the lenovo

      • Which laptop would be better for gaming, Hp or Lenovo? (Just light gaming. Which has fastest graphics?)

        • IMO Lenovo (the HP is OK though if you don't have edu access)

  • I actually subscribed to the newsletter for the 10% off, however, still have not received the newsletter yet after 3 days.

  • Is an 8GB ram enough to run multiple windows including those auto-startups without any lag?

  • Hey guys, why is this laptop so cheap even in its original price? Like the specs are not too bad, compared to other similar specs of Lenovo they are higher.

    • +1

The IdeaPad 3, non Pro, is their entry level laptop. The higher tier laptops such as the IdePad Pro have the following features for the AMD spec which make it more expensive

      Aluminium chassis vs plastic
2k screen, with higher brightnesses and colour gamut, vs 1080p, lower brightness and colour gamut
Faster Ryzen CPU such as a 5600u
More port selection or access to higher speed i/o
