That's a great price but my local parks and school ovals likely aren't going to look any better in 4k with a filter over it.

One day I'll upgrade to DJI, but given I only fly a few hours per year, it doesn't seem like a great investment.

Wait till you can fly on top of the DJI drone

      Like neverending story!

    • +1

The main question is are your local parks and school ovals allow you to fly a drone in the first place?
So many places now are banning drones.

      • FPV is a grey area by itself - hence why I keep away from people.

        • +1

It's not just about keeping away from people. You can see signs posted in many parks banning flying any drones or remote controlled planes.

          • @edfoo: I've never seen one, but of course I'd adhere to it. I assume they aren't as common where I live.

I've got the apps which show me where I can and cannot fly.

      • +1

No individual body can “ban” drones, these aircraft’s and airspace is under the jurisdiction of casa, all they can say is no takeoff and landing from the area. So if you really want to fly then just take off somewhere else and fly over

    • Thanks for letting us know of your goals.

  • What's the name of the flying creature in never ending story?

  • +2

This looks like a ton of fun, but seems like there's a million hoops to jump through to fly it just about anywhere.

  • +3

Can you fly this in Australia?

  • +5

    I miss the Bunnings blunder.

    • +6

I got a $250 gift card out of that. Good times.

  • Refer to this link:
    https://www.casa.gov.au/drones/drone-rules/flying-first-pers…
"You can fly FPV indoors for sport or recreation provided the drone can’t get out of the building. You do not need CASA approval."

    • +4

Sounds fun flying a 1kg brick that does 0-100km/h in about 2 secs, indoors.

I guess technically legal if you fly in bandos.

      • +3

CASA are really behind on the times when it comes to FPV.

In order for you to fly an FPV drone outside of a building they expect you to pay $100 for an authorization to do so. It's the idiots who fly in restricted spaces and around other people that give drone operators a bad name.

      • That particular law is really designed with micro cinewhoops in mind. But no way would I be flying a DJI FPV inside.

  • How will CASA even find out that you're flying this drone without their approval anyway? Will it be due to other people reporting the user and taking a photo as evidence, or will they track the device somehow? I'm actually curious because there was someone flying a drone very close to where I used to work and that drone was very close to people. The drone was just 20 meters above them, I tried to report the drone but the questions were that do I know who the operator is and that do I know where that person is, I clicked "No" and was pretty much told they can't do anything about it.

    • So it’s hard to get caught and CASA knows it. They also make the most of it if they do get a scapegoat so I guess it’s a deterrence/honour system

Saw a guy flying a drone in the middle of KingsCross CBD last night. Thought there was a giant mosquito above the Taxi, nah, blinking lights and he landed it right in front of us in plain view.

    • +1

Chance of getting caught is very low. However, if you cause injury to someone (or do property damage eg to an actual aircraft) and you are violating the rules you are going to be in deeeep shit.

  • +1

Just wondering if I could use it to fly on top my own house to check solar panel and gutter etc? Thanks.

    • +2

I've been doing this for quite some time, checking the roof tiles, etc. You don't need this expensive drone to do this. A much cheaper and simpler one could get the job done perfectly, e.g. Mini 2, which is also the one I'm using for this task.

    • +1

You can but you are not "allowed" to.

      • Now allowed to check your own roof? Oh snap lol

      • Unless your house is next to an airfield then you definitely can. Outside 3 miles of an airport, up to 400ft is fair game. (Even closer if your drone weighs under 250g like the mini 2)

      • As long as you don't use the FPV goggles, you can do this within the law. You can fly on your own property.

      • Unless you live next to an restricted airspace like an airport, you most definitely can..

Edit: sorry, to add, with a NORMAL non-FPV drone aka not this one.

    • You can get a mavic pro and the gen 1 goggles used for under a grand. That would do a better job for inspection since it has 3 axis gimble, head tracking movement on camera and higher res feed from the goggles.

      • Do the dji goggles pair with the mavic? I Thought this wasn't possible?

        • Not those in that combo, the earlier gen 1 DJI Goggles. A cheaper alternative is to use an app like Litchi and mobile VR headset.

  • +2

Crazy price! Adding to this, the dji fpv batteries and fly more kit were $75 off at XM2 Store this morning. Code was DJIFPV22.

  • FYI although dji make decent drones, their chinese customer service is pretty drone-like too.

Furthermore, recently their app became broken for a lot of phones and android 12. it crashes every time you try to open it immediately.

They have a new version but they can't get it approved for the google store - which seems shady.

I asked them for a refund of my mavic 2 pro since it's now an expensive paperweight and they would not oblige.

Also on top of that, I will never buy another dji drone because of the fiaso with their smart controller - an 800 addon which they touted as an incredible bright controller. Except for the fact they made it incompatible with their new dji mavic 3 and now it's another expensive paperwight.

    buyer beware.

    • With DJI, stick with iOS devices if you value your time.

  • If I had a use for this, I'd be all over it. Very impressive.

    • Here's a use: hand/eye coordination… keeps from getting old and stupid.
Then race with 18-25 yr olds to feel really useless.
