Fishing on an inflatable kayak is like using a colander as a stand up paddle boat

So ahhh, how recommended are using these if the only water knowledge is swim school before you're 10 for a few years and not really using much of that knowledge (or stamina) in the last 15+? 😅 Heck, I don't even remember proper freestyle form.

Been super keen on kayaking since doing it on a school camp at like 17. Thinking of the bigger picture, even going solo (they have the K1's on sale for $199 aswell), I'm now a little worried about having issues by myself on a river or even not far off the beach. I think a lifejackey is necessary from memory and probably some sort of GPS/beacon/radio if something goes wrong?

Anyone got any tips/recommendations on where to get started? TIA! <3

Would recommend a non inflatable yak if you can transport it. Start in estuaries, lakes, lagoons and protected bays until you're confident to take on tidal and flowing streams.

Watch the wind forecasts and keep your life jacket on at all times. Probably don't need a GPS. The boating HD app is pretty good on your phone.

Always use a paddle leash as well

        I wouldn't recommend a non-inflatable kayak if you're a beginner or unsure.

I have the Challenger K2. I find it more stable than non-inflatable (due to higher sides). Plus, it can stay afloat on just one chamber for added safety (in addition to your PFD).

It had been stored on a shelf for 2 years, but used it around the canals at Mooloolaba a couple of weeks ago. Kids love it, too. And the dogs (who also have PFDs).

Also bought the Excursion 5 and got a 54lb thrust Watersnake trolling motor + motor mount + LiFePo4 battery + battery box with 60A breaker + 200 Solar blanket. Worked really well on the Mooloola River with the kids and family. Cost around $1k and it is a good addition to our camping kit (battery, box, solar). Black Friday deals worked well.

I am a bit of a convert to inflatables. We would not have taken a rigid on holiday. So my advice is that unless you live on the water and/or have racks ready for a rigid, try an inflatable and see how you go. And maybe get swimming lessons. But wear your PFD (make sure you get a comfortable one).

    • I also got an Excursion 5.

I found this from amazon, not sure why ozbargain doesn't allow me to post the link,

Giantz 100Ah Deep Cycle Battery & Battery Box 12V AGM Marine Sealed Power Solar Caravan 4WD Camping

      • I’m not sure if anyone aware that excursion 4 & 5 were sold $120 & $170 respectively in catch of the day back in nov 2021 when CR also further gave another 15% capped at $30… wish the deal will be back again

  • You fellas are soo awesome on OZB! Thanks for the decent writeups!

It probably won't see that much use, maybe once or twice a month if I can so probably makes more sense to get an inflatable but I definitely understand going for a solid kayak if applicable.

Definitely have to grab a decent PFD and yeah, paddle leash sounds like a really smart idea aswell!

Yeah, thinking now open water is probably a dumb idea but lakes and stuff seem chill to start out. I remember my school camp partner and I got bored on the Murray and ended up slaloming the tipped-in trees/branches to keep us entertained at times.. 😅

I'm really eyeing that K1 now… Thanks again for all your advices!

  • Anyone know if the K2(2 person) can be used by for 1 person? I want to buy this mostly for myself but occasionally with son/wife.

    • +1

From what I've read, it can be used in one or two person mode.

  • How big is it folded up

  • Does anyone know if the included pump for this will work with an Adventure Kings SUP? About to buy one and not sure if I need to get an extra pump

  • we bought the 3-person version from Decathlon. I am still not sure if we should keep that one and buy something cheaper, like the one posted here. Any comments? btw, stand-up boards are very popular these days. I am considering getting one too.
