Canon EOS RP with 50/1.8 STM $1527 ($1427 with Cashback) Delivered @ Georges Cameras

150

lowest price I reckon so far? Canon cashback post.

it is the cheapest full frame camera Canon made.

good for: portraits, still life, landscapes (no challenging lighting), and as a general consumer camera that gives fantastic results with little effort. trust me, UI is miles ahead of what any other manufacturers have done in that space. Canon design and UI are the best, the end.

however focusing and shots per second aren't fast enough for sports, dynamic range isn't great for challenging lighting, video capabilities lag behind Sony. also silent shutter is very limited. also there's no in body stabilisation, however if you get IS lenses from Canon, they are fantastic.

however if you shoot jpeg, and want good shots out of camera, with little or no editing, Canon RP is great deal on a budget.

I shot Canon RP for about 10 months and took a lot of fantastic photos. with a 24-105/4L there's little that you can't do

honestly though, I switched to A7iii and while interface is mind boggling, I am not looking back.

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2021

Canon EOS RP Full Frame Mirrorless Camera, Black https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07NPVXHF7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_g…

    • amazon comes without 50 1.8 lens

  • +2

Imagine thinking you can’t take landscape photos with a 12 stop, 2020 era $1500 dslr lol

And what ‘sports’ is it not fast enough for? You aren’t courtside at the NBA shooting for Reuters.

It’s a consumer level camera for consumer level applications. And it’s perfect for those.

    • +2

at 4fps with full focus you'll just miss the shot

yes I am not shooting for Reuters but it's kinda good to cover kids sports activities at school

      • You can get to 5fps according to Ken - a 20% increase, but, as you said, useless for Sports unless you're stopped down, missing out on bokeh and highlighting the subject.

        " Getting 5 FPS

The EOS RP only runs at 5 FPS in ONE SHOT AF or MANUAL focus modes, making 5 FPS only useful for a subject that stays in the same place — which makes it not that useful. If you're in SERVO AF so you can track something that's moving, then Continuous Hi runs at 4 FPS instead and also tracks exposure from frame to frame.

To get to 5 FPS, first select the high-speed continuous advance mode (Q/SET > find advance mode on rear LCD > High Speed Continuous or use the M-Fn button), and then select ONE SHOT as the AF mode on the rear screen, or move the lens' AF/MF switch to MF. Also turn off Flicker reduction and oddly Canon says to turn off lens Image Stabilization.

Exposure only tracks (changes) from frame-to-frame if you're in SERVO autofocus, so exposure is also locked at 5 FPS."

      • If you can’t shoot kids playing sport with 4/5fps, that’s not a camera problem.

        • OTOH, if you can, it may point to a fitness problem :-p

        • o rly

let's imagine you're shooting a kid batting in cricket. with 4 fps good luck catching a shot of ball on the bat

same for say long jumps. good luck catching the moment of the kid just landed on the sand (and choose the best shot afterwards)

10 fps gives much more choice in between. not only sport, any action really.

      • Wow, only 4-5 fps, that's kinda pathetic for a camera in 2021. Really pales in comparison to A7iii

    • Mirrorless but I get your point

  • Other than megapixels what's the difference between RP and R?

    • Best to look up reviews as there are a fair few differences - but to start with, the RP is lighter / smaller (for a positive) which is why I like using it over the R. The R has various tech upgrades including closing of the shutter when removing the lens, top facing digital display etc.

    • As someone who has owned both, my opinion is that the biggest differences between the RP and the R are:

      • The R has LP-E6N battery, which lasts a lot longer. It's what you will find in the XD (5D, 6D, etc) and the rest of the R range.
      • The R is a lot quicker
      • The R is a LOT more comofrtable in bigger hands (RP's smaller height digs into my hands)
      • The R is a bit sturdier, but also heavier (worse to carry in a backpack, but balances better with lenses)
      • The R has a screen on top (preview settings, I missed this more than I thought I would on the RP)
      • The RP is a lot better value

I went from the RP to the R and now I'm looking at going back to the RP. If I was still shooting professionaly, or you shoot fast sports as your hobby, then I would choose the R (and that's what I recommend if it's your goal).

But, I'm shooting land scapes and portaits as a hobby these days, and I have EF-M cameras that take the LPE-17 batteries (same as the RP). So, that's what I recommend if that's your situation.

  • +1

I just order mine from camerapro yesterday. They have it for $1359 after cashback with the Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM Lens

    • Just looked it up and the price you mention is for without the lens - guessing they changed it?

      • The wording of free lense is still in the page. It does mention while stock last though. Maybe use the online chat to see what happened.

      • "Buy Canon EOS RP and receive Bonus Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM Lens valued at $339. Limited-stock. T&C's apply."

  • Thanks OP. Do you know of any deals for the EOS RP with 24-105mm lens?

    • +1

no, maybe something will surface tomorrow

I bought mine on boxing Day sales 2020, exactly a year ago. Leederville cameras dropped RP 24-105 STM kit to $1750, I price matched at Harvey's (hall of shame I know) and Canon gave a $250 cashback on top, so $1500 for RP 24-105 kit

hopefully there will be a better deal this year? tech is supposed to get cheaper over time?

it seems to go backwards recently though..

otherwise I picked up 24-105/4L which is much superior to the STM counterpart for $1400 on one of eBay sales in June.

can't go wrong with the combination of RP plus 24-105/4L. grip extender recommended though. RP is nice and light, but with bigger lenses like 24-105L or 100-400 STM you kinda want a better grip.

Canon released the 16 2.8 STM that's a fantastic lens. if you've never shot ultrawide get ready to have your mind blown

but you know that's one of the reasons I dumped Canon: lenses are either super expensive or low quality

with Sony at least there's more choice and it's more flexible. like 16-35/4 Zeiss is fantastic for photo reporting, video work, landscapes, events you name it, is relatively light, built like tank and has fantastic glass in it. got mine for $1k. Canon equivalent is upward of $2k. same about 70-200/4, Sony counterpart is $1300 while Canon is twice that

yeah I get it, Canon RF 70-200/4L is revolutionary because it's more compact and lightweight, but hey I just need great image quality, and I actually prefer fixed (non-extending) zoom design for a peace of mind (dust free)

      • Thanks mate for the great details. Indeed, my preference is for a 24-105/4L USM lens but unfortunately all the bundle deals I have seen so far are available only with STM lens.

Agree with your comment on Sony. It's just that I already got a few lenses for Canon (DSLR) and moreover, the heart is not wanting to change the brand loyalty :-). Just one of my stupidity :-).

        • yes I hear you

a few months ago that was my thoughts exactly, and I had lots of cool Canon glass. it was hard to part with the RF 100-400 STM glass, there's no alternatives on the market. Also Canon 300/4L is the best lens ever made, no one else has one. or 200/2.8L for that matter (long black prime). but life is life, all gone now

Canon lagging behind the competition in pretty much everything finally got to me, and I sold bodies, glass and all while it holds value, and switched to Sony.

  • I ordered on 10 January. I was wondering why it's still 'Processing' on my order history on 14 January. I went to go to their live chat support, and they said that the stock will have an ETA of March, which is unacceptable since they didn't say that it's out of stock in the website. Cancelled my order now.

My advice is to check if they have stock before ordering. They don't show that the item is out of stock. They'll just grab your money first.
