Big thank you to the SES and Lions Club volunteers!

  • FWIW apparently Wagner's "Flight of the Valkyries" is the absolute worse thing to listen to whilst driving!

    • I used to play it everytime coming down the highway into Launceston! Its great. Used to play it before exams to hype myself up & topped my year.

      • +1

There was something about the magnificence of the view that demanded a powerful piece of music to accompany it. Hearing that music will always bring back that scene.

The only effect it had on my driving was to make me more alert. But it was played in hire cars on basic sound systems at moderate volume on almost empty highway just after sunrise. Risk: almost none!

      • But it is high sound level rather than the music which is dangerous
"based on research it says shows loud music can cause accidents" in a British RAC "research". (Most RAC members are more likely to be classical than heavy metal etc music listeners!) It is only a problem because most people crank up this piece.
        http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/4740514/ns/today-entertainment…
Popular media leave out the most important findings, to go for the sensational trivia!
Also criticised were “Firestarter” by the Prodigy, “Red Alert” by Basement Jaxx and “Insomnia” by Faithless.

That "research" was just lifted from research by Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada, who found "drivers are distracted by the loud and quick pace of Wagner, which lowered reaction time in a critical situation by up to 20 percent. The Canadian researchers say listeners experience a faster heart rate and increased blood pressure, regardless of the type of music, if music is above 60 beats per minute." http://www.ergoweb.com/news/detail.cfm?id=1228

So it was not just this piece of music. Usual sensation grabbing by the media, repeated by those who do not understand the original research, but know how to grab attention!!

Other British motoring reports say a hazard is caused when the piece is played on radio - many drivers pull over on the motorways to listen to the 8 minute piece at the same time!! I doubt anyone would listen to the entire 20 hours of Der Ring des Nibelungen while driving.

The 2004 "research" has been misinterpretted so many times since then.
And for a lighter look at this "research" http://www.deadbrain.co.uk/news/article_2004_04_16_4518.php

        • And thats how you create an uban myth -
          take a legitimate study on (any) loud noise (95 decibels - "the equivalent of an oil rig") impeding reaction time (not limited just to driving) - who wouldn't be distracted at that noise level!;
add "Previous research by the RAC Foundation also shows … motorists should be careful to pick slower tempo music if they want to avoid an accident. The research found that drivers who were listening to music with a fast beat were twice as likely to go through a red light and have twice as many accidents."

Erroneously combine without any further study & report as a sexed up media warning for safe Easter driving 8 years ago. The media then misquoted that warning, those misquotes were misquoted, until it has almost nothing to do with the valid research findings on noise levels. Media warning - don't listen to Wagner & you'll be safe!

So there is no known evidence to show playing "Wagner's "Flight of the Valkyries" is the absolute worse thing to listen to whilst driving!" Unfortunately people quote media sources, rather than go to the source documents (simple with Google) & so perpetuate the myth.
It was just a media beat up!

    • And what music is recommended by that original 2004 RAC comment "Grooving while Cruising?" on safe driving? The one that "apparently" criticised Wagner.
      1. Gary Jules – “Mad World”
      2. Lemar – “Another Day”
      3. Sugababes – “Too lost in You”
      4. Blue – “Breathe Easy”
      5. Norah Jones – “Come away with me”
but at low volume please… we're British

“The findings of the Canadian study are bad news for decibel loving drivers, as they prove that not only is loud music a nuisance to others, it could also be the cause of accidents on the roads.
“Although the increased reaction time from playing loud music translates into mere fractions of a second, on the UK’s busy roads this Easter, this delay could mean the difference between a hit or a miss."

Happy driving! I'll still enjoy the occassional Wagner, at moderate sound levels, which was found to be safe.
