How Often do You Wash Your Air Fryer?

Just wondering how often you all wash your air fryer? I use my air fryer almost every day to heat up store bought Frozen Hash Brown but I dont wash them straight away. Normally after couple of days or could be up to one week. How about you?

Depends on the contents and the mess left behind.

Chips and hash browns - whenever I feel like it
Marinated drum sticks - straight after dinner

    • Ditto.

      • i marinate the drumsticks after cooking … keep the crunch, still get the sauce

        • +6

          This seems somewhat illogical.

        • Wouldn't the 'crunch' go soft if you let it marinate after cooking….and go cold and just need to heat it up again?

Or do you just mean you put sauce on after cooking?

  • +2

When it needs to be washed. Really depends what's being cooked.

  • +1

    foil for most uses
wash straight after cooking if it leaks to the side

    • +11

I used foil as well but found that baking paper works better as it does not stick.

      • +34

Doesn't foil/baking paper block the holes which makes the air fryer less effective?

        • +3

Yes it does. It also ruins the spiral airflow which is specifically designed in the base contours for a reason.

As others have said, stick basket in washing machine if cooking meat or anything messy. Just fries or frozen pastries you can get away with not washing every time.

          • @Hybroid:

It also ruins the spiral airflow which is specifically designed in the base contours for a reason.

            that depends on brand/model.
they dont all have the 'philips' like contours on the bottom

          • +5

            @Hybroid: Omo or cold power?

            • @TEER3X: OMO 3 in 1. Half price at Coles every other month.

Foil at high temp no good for your health

      • -2

how hot do you think you're getting an air fryer?

        • -2

          Try touching the heating element…

          • +3

@skillet: perhaps you could try slightly more scientific ways of determining or explaining heat, and how that heat within the air fryer puts you into 'high temp' which would cause aluminium foil to produce health impacts
            .

      • Please, do go on. I'm keen to hear your reasoning

      • -1

salty or acidic foods aren't recommended eg things like tomatos and beets. They leach more than other foods. just use baking paper for them.

    • think you need to take a course on air frying basics

  • uh, hardly ever. unless its a roast pork. Then ill clean it when i use it next :D

  • +39

I respect that you eat hash browns every day.

    • +1

Hash brown, half Avocado, Bacon, scramble egg and baked beans almost every morning for my big breakfast when wfh. If I have to go the office than just pop two hash in the air fryer before shower then take them on the way out to eat on the train. Saves money than buying out.

      • Delicious!

  • +4

A quick wipe over with some paper toweling after I use it and it's washed every week or so, depending on how often it's used.

  • +14

How are people not washing the air fryer after every use??!

    • +24

How? It's easier than washing it
      .

    • +8

If there are no crumbs or liquids remaining, could then give it a wipe.

    • +11

      Not washing my oven

      • +1

Well i guess you can use foil for oven, or wash the trays…

      • +1

Do you just dump stuff on the floor of your oven?

    • +2

IKR, this is like asking whether you should wash a frying pan every time you cook in it if it's only a 'bit' dirty… people are crazy.

      • No we are just lazy

  • +25

I clean my air guitar daily so of course i clean my air fryer daily too.

I want to see a split for male and female voters..

    • -1

      Why?

    • +1

I want to a standardised IQ score for each cohort too.

  • Any tips on cleaning my old philips one? :/

    • +3

Take the basket, bowl and plastic tray out. Stick it in dishwasher. Done.

  • +1

How long do I airfry hash browns

    • +1

10 mins at 200 C. Olive oil spray for extra crispyness.

      • +3

Canola or peanut oil higher boiling point

        • +1

          higher smoke point

      • i wonder if just using a frying pan is easier? I dont own an air fryer or really eat hash browns

        • +1

Buy an air fryer. You will find things to cook in it.

        • Not easier at all. They tend to stick on frying pan if you dont use enough oil.

  • +3

Wipe it when it needs it. Washed it once in 2 years. The non-stick surface makes it easy to clean.

  • Is it annoying to clean? Can they be cleaned in the dishwasher? Thinking getting the kmart 3 in 1

  • +2

Im male and clean after every use but we only use it for larger meals and I couldn't not clean a dish etc straight after a meal and we dont have a dishwasher. Ive never done frozen hash browns if it's just for yourself and it's Frozen hash browns not meat or any cooking oil you should be safe to clean as you said every couple days I personally couldn't not clean it.

  • +3

F me is this an IQ test If its dirty, wash it. Or don't wash it. Put some hot water and detergent in it after use. Then turf it before Next use.

  • -2

Next you will be talking about underwear… forgive me…but I feel Ozbargain can do a lot better by filtering out these utterly ridiculous questions. It is commonsense to clean your filthy rubbish.

    • +1

Agreed. Need to wash underwear after 4 days of wear. How filthy are these people?

    • Everyone has different sense of common sense.

  • +1

I put a layer of foul under the mesh. Then just replace that when it gets dirty. Saves having to scrub the base clean all the time.

Like most cooking devices. If you use it often enough then it's okay to leave oil and bits in it. But if it's something you only use every month or so then best to clean it after each use.

    • layer of foul

      It'll make it foul tbh…

    • Isn't it extremely obvious that this is not how it's meant to be used? The base has that shape for a reason…

      • Yea I mould the foil into the shape of the bottom.

    • I used to do this too but find that the oil sticks underneath the foils with hardened food scraps which makes it harder to clean. So I just wash them every couple of days after used. I mainly used them for hash brown or frozen fried food so theres not much oil.

  • +1

When I run a cycle of dishwasher.
Depends on the mess as well some have to wash right away.

  • +1

Depends on how much material remains I suppose. Chips and nuggets are good for several days whereas marinated foods needs to be an immediate clean.

You can get away with just cleaning the grill mesh regularly but leaving the base for several days. I line the base with foil to help with cleaning.

  • Immediately unless it's light stuff like bread or doughsticks. While hygiene is part of the reason, it's mainly to prevent the leftover stuff from imparting its flavour on the next food that goes in.

p.s. I make sticky BBQ pork and pork crackling with my air fryer. I also defrost frozen breads with it.

  • once a couple of weeks.

Hot water + detergent then cook for a few more mins. Rinse out in warm water after.

    • +1

By cook, do you mean run the air fryer while the detergent mix is inside the basket?

  • Don't forget to clean the heating element area too and not just the tray.

  • +1

    Seasonally

  • +1

how do you clean the sticky mark caused by the oil that got heated up? tried to soak the basket overnight with soap and hot water, still couldn't really get rid of it

    • Oven cleaner or a tub of Draino/drain cleaner crystals dissolved in water. Gets all the greasy mess off.

    • -1

Did you try a bit of elbow grease?

  • So 6 people wash it everyday even when they aren't using it?

  • I put aluminium foil at the bottom. Change the foil every month or two if I use it a lot. I only need to clean the grill part.

  • +3

Are you supposed to wash it?

    • +1

I've never cleaned mine. And I'm alive still but I can see the build up growing higher.

  • I don't even know how I would stay in shape eating hash browns every day. I don't know how you do it.

  • +1

If used for dry food like heating up bread/toast etc. I will just leave it. Anything with oil or stickiness, we will just stick it inside the dishwasher.

  • Once a day regardless if I used it or not.

  • -2

    disgusting

This is why I will never eat food made by anyone else. You never know what the condition of their kitchen or oven/air fryer is

    • +3

You've never eaten at a cafe or restaurant before…?

    • +1

There’s some real grubs in this world.

  • ? Whats the issue letting it sit? The heat will kill anything. Just make sure to eat food hot.
i.e. cleaning would be more for taste contamination than for health.

  • +1

Interesting to see the varied basic food practices and hygiene of the oz community.

  • +1

If it’s just chips or an apple pie I’ll reuse it.
If it’s fish, chicken or meat I’ll wash it either straight away or sometime before using it next.

  • Every time we use it? Isn't that normal?

  • +2

man i'd wash those guts more often than the airfryer if you're having frozen hashbrowns everyday…..

    • +2

I think OP heats them up so they are not frozen when they eat it

      • man i'd wash those guts more often than the airfryer if you're having frozen hashbrowns everyday…..

  • Has anyone cleaned the top metallic part of the airfryer? Mine is starting to turn quite dark almost black.

    • Yes, it's worth wiping down as oil splatters there. I haven't cleaned the element tho. I figure anything on it will be burnt off.

  • Once a year?

  • Everytime we wash ours, HN refuses warranty!

    • +1

I just get mine replaced under warranty when its dirty

  • The responses in the poll are directly linked to the gender of the respondents!

  • Not as often as I should. Though now I've moved in with my partner, more often then I used to!

  • Every 100 seconds

  • I use silicon mold for cake. then wire rack to elevate. I just wash the silicon mold and wire rack

  • +1

We're a few days in and I can't believe the vote is so split.

    • Ikr. Its 50:50

  • Every time. It's dishwashable, just chuck it in there and don't cook in dirty cookware like an animal.*

    *with the skills to cook

  • Usually at the same time as I fry my dishwasher

  • I just bring the air fryer basket into the shower with me. Saves water.
