Was looking for a cheap travel insurance covering COVID-19 and found again World2Cover with 20% off. Good to know that they don't have any exclusions for pandemics and epidemics in case a new virus decide to show up

Mod note: Not all policies offer COVID-19 coverage.

I've always found World2Cover to be excellent value.
Just noticed that 28 Degrees Credit Cards are offering free travel insurance subject to some limitations (doesn't appear to cover car hire excess) and some T&Cs - Minimum spend $1000 on flights.

What sorts of things have you claimed for? What was the claims process like?

      • Excellent value in terms of insurance cover/cost in comparison to other insurers.

I've had some experience in relation to minor damage ($100 type claims) and the claims process was very efficient.

I also had some covid cancellation claims (for pre-covid incurred expenses that were not fully refunded) and found them to be very fair.

  • I found SCTI to be cheaper and I think better coverage.

We provide certain policies which include limited benefits for COVID-19. For all other policies we provide, COVID-19 related losses are part of a General Exclusion and not intended to be covered. Please refer to the Product Disclosure Statement for the policy terms, limits conditions and exclusions relevant to this cover. If you have purchased an international or domestic policy from us that does not include COVID-19 benefits, this notice informs you of the knowledge that there would be no intended coverage for any claim that relates to COVID-19. This applies to any section of the policy.

Remember: Don't buy insurance based on price. Do your research on customer service and claims management performance.

A good place to start is the AFCA Datacube where you'll want to look for Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co Ltd

There's also Choice but keep a close eye on their product review dates (eg thispage notes "Last updated: 06 March 2020" which means you could be comparing apples, oranges and potatoes).

    • As someone who works as an Insurance Broker - can confirm that the backing of Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance Co Ltd or Chubb Insurance are the most effective policies.

However, the only caveat I say is to please read the exclusions more carefully than the inclusions

  • Dont forget the pineapples too…..Lots of those in insurance!

  • Hmmm…. exclusions

Claims directly or indirectly arising from any government or public health authority mandatory quarantine or
isolation order imposed on You related to border, region or territory travel in response to COVID-19.

Looks like the few benefits you get are only with the top cover, and then only if there is a diagnosis or suspected diagnosis of yourself, or your accommodation provider.
    Pretty limited.

Yeh. I've been researching a few different providers for domestic insurance, the common scenario covered being if you or your travelling companion catches covid and unable to travel. The only one I found to include cover if you where to be quarantined because you have been identified as a close contact is from Medibank travel insurance. It is however the most expensive (even with 15% discount for existing medibank members), but it has the most coverage. No insurance policies I have seen will cover border closures. Also the $ limit for claiming cancellations and lost deposits is unlimited with Medibank, all other providers are pretty low ranging from $2500-5000

  • Got this previously but went unused, how did other people find it, heard mixed reviews but their coverage is quite good compared to others or was anyway

  • Does anyone know how long this code is valid for?

It mentions that they don’t provide cover if you purchase a policy and the country you’re going to is currently listed as Do Not Travel but the Australian Government. Sound like you need to wait until the places are listed as OK to travel before you buy the insurance.

  • I've had a good experience getting a claim settled (camera damage) in pre-covid travel. But I wasn't looking at them this time because of the COVID related cover (or lack thereof). Covermore is looking like the goods this time around - shame, as I liked world2cover.

  • Do people get travel insurance cover for domestic trips within Australia?

    • +1

Not usually since Medicare is effective country wide (if it wasn't, I'd be very wary)

  • Ouch, I am pretty late to the game. The promotion was over. Thanks OP anyway!
