this laksa is good. feeds around four. follow the recipe (water and coconut milk) or it does get a bit spicy

    • what is the different between curry and laksa?

      • +11

Laksa is a Malaysian dish of Chinese origin, consisting of rice noodles served in a curry sauce or hot soup.

Curry is a dish of meat, vegetables, etc., cooked in an Indian-style sauce of hot-tasting spices and typically served with rice.

      • +3

Asam Laksa is tamarind based, so it's more sour. Curry laksa has a few more herbs (fennel/cumin,etc)

        • It seems that the Assam laksa is less likely to have that earthy shrimp taste (belcam?)

          • +1

@voteoften: Er, not quite. Assam laksa has no prawns; it's fish-based, and like @rhimes said, sour because it's got lots of tamarind. We do eat assam laksa with he kor, which is a kind of shrimp paste, but it's got a completely different flavour profile and appearance to belacan. He kor has a consistency of molasses, is used more of a condiment, and you eat assam laksa with or without it. Fresh herbs such as torch ginger flower, pineapple and cucumber are eaten with it also, whereas in curry laksa you have more cooked ingredients, like tofu puffs. The noodles used are also completely different.

Curry laksa is more of a KL thing, while assam laksa is something that we northerners eat more. In actuality though, there's so, so many different types of laksa out there; each region has a completely different type, so it really annoys me that people keep saying that "laksa" (when they mean curry laksa) is the national dish of Malaysia when there are so many variations.

Please confirm which Laksa brand is good as I can see a few when clicking on the link e.g.

      1. Chilliz Assam Laksa Paste 200 g, 200 g, Assam Laksa (3/5 rating)
      2. Tean's Gourmet Curry Laksa Paste 200 g, 200 g, Curry Laksa (4/5 rating)
      3. Por Kwan Laksa Paste, 200 g (4/5 rating)
      4. Osha Curry Laksa Paste 2x220g (0 rating)
      5. Curry Laksa Paste - 250 gm (0 rating)

The Chilliz brand has poor rating for some reason but that's for Assam Laksa.

On further investigation, I can see Chilliz Laksa Stock Curry Paste 200 g, 200 g, Laksa Stock Curry. However, that's out of stock so how did you find it?

The reason why the Assam Laksa had 1 bad review was because the person buying it is not aware that Assam Laksa (a Penang dish) has fish in it.

Unfortunately the listing doesn't help, but if you were a Malaysian, the 1st thought of Assam Laksa is that it is a fish-based laksa.

        • You are so right to say that.
I am always confused when it comes to curry laksa but it is actually curry+noodles.
My understanding of curry laksa is something like Nyonya Laksa or Kallang Laksa.
My closest reference to it is the Secret Recipe's Curry Laksa.
It has galangal, dried shrimps and vietnamese mints.

        https://www.amazon.com.au/Teans-Gourmet-Curry-Laksa-Paste/dp…

this one aint bad as well
        very similar to the above

        • Quite expensive for a paste. $3.40?
Been a while since I bought any packet stuff. Thought it was going to be $1.50 or so.

      • Tried a few of these brands but i still go back to Teans..

      • Who doesn't love a good Laksa?? Jim's Malaysian does it really well, down in Hawkers Lane.

I also would like someone to Please confirm which Laksa brand is good to make at home.

        Thanks in advance

Isn't this the normal price? I started following this product after the last deal at $1.78, and it's been this price ever since it ended.

      This has become OzAdvertisement

    • +4

Apology, didn't check the prior price. I was looking for this and compared with my local grocery, found it cheaper in Amazon.
Might be useful for someone that is stocking this for the holiday season. Cook something to "impress".

Mod, please feel free to delete this if this is against the rule.

+1 for OPs to promote at least a cursory check of previous deal prices at time of post/description rather than have each OzBargainer look individually themselves

This is one of the reasons it is great when people link specific items with descriptions to be able to discern whether there are deals present.

Been monitoring the product and this is the normal price. But still cheaper than my local Asian grocer.

Anyone got a good recommendation for a satay base?

    • Peanuts

    • 200ml of coconut milk or made up from coconut powder, 1 tablespoon red curry + 1 of curry powder + one of fish sauce + 1.5 of Brown sugar + one of light soy sauce (or dark but half amount)+ 3 of roasted unsalted Peanuts crushed in Mortar (or Eta crunchy Peanut butter but is will make it salty so cut fish sauce x half) one of fine chopped coriander after it thickens and a little lime juice. (all Level Tablespoons)
Warning: can be addictive and fattening

  • the Laksa is very good. Highly recommend.

  • +1

This is normal price. It was $1.75 when its on special.

  • +1

I find some laksa pastes/kits are especially "shrimpy" flavoured - Any feedback on the level of shrimpy-ness? I understand shrimp paste is a key ingredient and required for a laksa, but just don't like it to overpower the dish.

    • +1

      Definitely don’t try Asam Laksa

      • My partner loves the Assam Laksa

  • +1

This is my favourite curry laksa base. Haven't tried the others in the same line, but as stated above usually cheaper at Asian groceries

    • A coupler commenters said that Amazon is cheaper than their local grocery!

      • Oops my bad, but it has been cheaper where my Asian groceries are (probably because there are like 5 competing places)

  • I think I just got the last laksa

  • how do you make a genuine nasi uduk?

    • -4

Well nasi, you quickly bend over when you see something coming towards you. Hope this helps.

    • Might be cheaper to eat at a restaurant if you are only eating for 1 as the ingredients are not that cheap.

I was looking for banana leaves a few weeks ago and was shocked at the price (more than $1 per leaf). Ended up just using foil ;)

  • Uncle Roger

    • fried rice. not laksa.

  • +2

This is the normal price for this product. Highly recommended though - genuine nasi lemak taste - as good as it gets.

    • yeah seems to be the normal price according to camelx3, so no bargain here :/

  • Not a bargain.
