Cleanshot X is a screenshot capture and annotation tool for macOS. I use it multiple times per day.

From the website:

Give your friends the superpower of productivity!
We are sure you know someone who could benefit from a great screen capture tool. Show your friends that you care by giving them CleanShot.

For every gift purchased we will plant a tree.

After completing the purchase, you will get a link that you can deliver to your friend.

I don't know if you can gift a copy to yourself with the same email address.

doesnt macOS also have a shortcut key like windows' windows key+shift+S

    • Yes but it just dumps the file into a directory. This gives you a nice set of tools for editing and annotating the screenshot. It also uploads the screenshots to make it easy to share them.

You can change it to dump the file to desktop, in the format you prefer.
I prefer PDF to my desktop

      • Since Mojave (I think) you just click on the preview in the corner of your screen right after you take the screenshot. Then you can annotate, copy, paste etc without it ever needing to go to file. Cleanshot is really superfluous now.

Seems expensive for what it does.

    Licensed per Mac…

I hate companies that charge extra depending on the number of Macs you use it on.

  • The code ‘newsletter’ is not working for me: You need to enter a valid coupon code.

  • Yes to all the criticisms.

Having said that - I actually bought a license a few weeks back, and then another one for my other Mac. It’s not perfect - I’ve got some issues with being unable to access previously taken screenshots (something that Capto does very well). But it’s a neat package. If you take more than the occasional screenshot it’s well worth considering.

Accessing old screenshots is annoying until you realise which folder they're saved in. Right click on menu bar icon > Preferences > Export location to check/set it. I also have set copy to clipboard under advanced preferences to image only, which makes it as I generally want to paste the screenshot straight into something.

  • This is one of the best choices for screen recording on Mac.
Able to record the internal sound as well as mic

how are you able to save it in a format (without running it through some conversion process/script) after choosing your area to capture?

every time I've done it .. it always saved as a png and on the desktop. =(

      update:
nevermind, I just googled it .. thanks for letting me know I could even CHANGE the format to something else. =P

      • No problem. For my workflow, it works out better to save as PDF, and onto my desktop.

  • On the mobile view at least it doesn’t make the license model clear. Just be aware you are paying for 12 months of updates. You can use the app past the 12 months but you won’t get any patches or new features unless you then renew. It’s a semi-subscription model where you don’t lose access to the app but you may find you need to pay again down the line if an OS update breaks it or something of that nature.

It’s a quality app but not worth this price to me. As a criticism though, the app used to be sold under a perpetual license and I purchased it on sale when it has that model. They then pulled the rug out of everyone’s feet and shifted to this different model and I was given only 3 months of updates/support for an app I’d purchased outright with no notion of a support period. While I don’t begrudge them changing to a more sustainable business model, I’ve had other companies do change models but offer existing customers much longer than the 3 months I got for this app. The only reason I still have it is because it’s included in Set App which I currently have a subscription to.
