What Price Rises Have You Noticed Lately?

Price rises happening across the board, some of the things that I have noticed are:

Prices are before the weekly half price sales…

Product Was Now
Quilton 2 ply tissue box 250 sheets $2.50 $2.70
Zooper Dooper $5.80 $6.20
Kettle Chips $4.65 $5.00

The local fish and chips shop has increased the prices on nearly every item as well.

In Melbourne petrol is hitting a 6 week low.

      • +4

make the most of it while you can.. xmas holiday "Cycle" is due any minute now

      • In May this year, Melbourne petrol was below $1.

I remember I had it near Southland and it was 76c (after the crazy 10c + 4c + 4c discounts)

If we are to only go back 6 weeks, of course it is "6 weeks low" but that's only 1/4 of the story.

        • +1

You’re dreaming mate, it was not $1 any time this year. Get your facts right, you may be thinking late march early April 2020. But that isn’t a fair comparison when you had supermarket fights, chaos and fear everywhere etc etc.

          • +2

            @cloudy: You are right!

Just looked at my log book and I filled up on 09/05/2020 at 77c.

            On 27/11/2020, I filled up at 98c.

Lowest this year was 28/02/21 at $1.15.

  • +11

    Everything, houses, cars, food, lube

  • Blue ribbon ice cream. Was $4.90 for the longest time, recently gone up to $5.75.

    • +1

      NO!!!!!!

    • +1

Yes - has been $4.90 for ages and now woolworths have the cheek of saying its now on "everyday low price of $5.75".
Makes you wonder how many other examples there are of them putting similar wording to make it look like its a genuine price/offer when its actually gone UP!

      • Also supermarket brand chicken tenders, from $3.50 to $3.80. I buy them because they have the highest percentage of chicken breast even compared to the named brands.

By the way, blue ribbon vanilla is the best vanilla ice cream. :)

      • +2

Same as Coles. "Everyday low price" of $1.30 as if we never noticed what it used to be.

        Cartels they both are.

  • +1

Of course it has to be Celery

    AdBlue

    • AdBlue is the 2021 version of Toilet Paper*
      (Do not substitute either).

      • Apparently it isn't an issue because we can just "PiSs iN oUr aDbLuE tAnKz." according to this post

public transport was expensive enough already..

  • +1

    Paper based products.

    Aldi 24 pack toilet paper

Cheapo home brand tissues 99c to1.30

    • Aldi 24 pack toilet paper

$7.99 to $8.99? Not as steep as cheapo home brand tissues.

      • $7.99 to $8.99?

Yea, my iPad cut that off after I typed it.

  • +3

Smiths Chips, used to be $1.75 on sale ($3.50), now $1.87 ($3.74)

    • +1

      That's annoying

At least they didn't shrink the bag again…it'd disappear!

    • +2

And the Smiths "Thin Cut" ones that were always $2 and never on offer are now $2.20

  • Dove body wash. The catalogue price at supermarket was usually less than $7. And now it's $7.5 with half price sale at Woolworths.

Hope the catalogue price at Chemist Warehouse will still be below $7…

  • +3

Woolworths milk…It was $3 around 1.5yrs back and now its reaching $3.90 under different labels like drought relief ….so almost 33% hike while salary is still same as it was

    • +2

Milk has been at unsustainable prices for years going back to Coles $1 a litre promo which decimated the industry.
It's starting to go back to pricing previously to what it was.

  • +1

    Hungry jacks vouchers

Banh mi place increased their price by 70c, the third time in the past two years.

    Petrol

Gym memberships are now closer to $2 a day pro-rated…

Milk, Petrol, Food/groceries, strata fees, traffic violation fines, Fast food, Shipping costs of Auspost, sendle etc. within or outside Australia.
    AND just so much moooooore.

But you know what hasn't changed ?

    15cents plastic shopping bags ???

    • +3

      15cents plastic shopping bags ???

      Used to be 10c

      • +1

I feel like I want to say something but on the second thought… better not.

But 10c in some place, 15c in some other places. For some, you can get it for free still. You just need to know where.

        • +1

          where how

          • @LordSydney: Gotta save money where you can! Yesterday, I saw someone at Aldi's take a plastic bag from the checkout lane next to mine and then walk 2 registers over to pay. :)

            • @eyeballz2770: I've seen people do that with the chiller bags, except they swiftly removed the tags and dropped a few cold items in the bag before loading on the conveyor. :)

          • +1

            @LordSydney: The "Oops" method.

      • Its been quite a long time since they increased to 15 cents from 10 cents.

  • +4

Humans also have been increasing in size.

    Younger kids are much taller.

    And will require more calories.

  • +3

    Definitely not Bitcoin!

    • Rekt

    • Good.

Been waiting for a good bloodbath to load up on dips.

The fiat truck is backed up and ready.

      • dollar cost avg?

        buying now?

        • I'm sitting on my hands and eyeing BTC, ETH and all L1 in the top 20. BTC could bleed to $42,000 in the next 30D.

      • You got 99.7% of your savings in crypto. Backing up the final 0.3%?

        • Digital asset backed loans to borrow stablecoins to accumulate more assets.

          • @rektrading: But you already borrowed against them for your living expenses at 1% APR.

            • @netjock: I only borrow enough to pay bills. The rest is set aside to buy tasty dips.

              • @rektrading: Why don't you pay the bills with the rest is set aside then borrow at 1% to buy the dips (tax deductible) instead of paying 1% all the time non tax deductible?

Who on youtube sold you that dud of an idea?

                • @netjock: Do you mean selling assets into fiat money to pay bills?

                  • @rektrading: It was fiat before you used it to buy assets. Then you borrow against it into fiat to pay it. Isn't that like buying Ampol shares, then asking the bank for loan against your Ampol shares so you can fill up on petrol.

                    • @netjock: I see what you mean.

Legacy banking calls it an ELOC and it's known as a CDP in CeFi/DeFi.

  • +4

    Everything.

The $1 coles tissue is now $1.30 (30% inflation).

    • This one is nuts. Maybe time to use those pocket squares left unused to blow my nose.

    • +3

      It was 95c before.

  • +3

Petrol is probably the crazy one.

  • +7

I'm glad that wages are the same. The co-operation by small businesses to hold on and wait for international visa holders is admirable. It's almost as if they could afford to wait for the lovely travellers.

Or my favourite at the moment is all the bleeding hearts in the media crying that they can't get workers. No one wants to work…

No, what they should be saying us they can't get workers for the piss ant amounts they are offering to pay people.

  • Ozbargain platinum membership.

    • I'm glad the price is going up, they're letting in too many people these days.

  • +4

Shrinkflation + inflation is here to stay.

People can expect more and more of both in 2022 and beyond.

  • +4

Frozen fruit - was $4/500g and now it's like $5.80

    • I can't believe it went up in price so quick!

    • +1

      This.

Shame on woolworths for attempting to obfuscate the huge price hike with "great low price" red stickers

    • +1

From Canada instead of Chile now.

  • Milk.

  • Spam has not gone on half price sale for long time

  • One thing I noticed recently. With Chemist Warehouse 10% off, it increased the exclusions to exclude things like Panadol. I noticed even some common brands are excluded too.

  • +1

    Frozen blueberries & raspberries 500g.
    Before: ~$3
    Now: ~$5-$7

    Such a freaking joke.

  • +2

if you're paying $5 for chips then you're definitely not Ozbargaining right.

But yeah, the inflation figures are a little undercooked methinks, rent and everything else has been sucking Australians dryl.

  • Local takeaway store got rid of their $2 for 3 potato cakes or 3 dim sims (mix and match).

They also removed prices of food in the bain-marie so it's going to be a surprise when they add everything up.

  • +1

Chocolate milk at aldi went from $2.50/2L to $3.50/2L in less than 6 months. Also changed to a new brand and the new stuff isn't as good.

  • +1

Nivea deodorant. Use to be 3.50 at chemist warehouse now standard price is $5.

  • Homebrand jam (Coles/Woolworths/Aldi) $1.39->$2.00
    Homebrand cream 600ml(Coles/Woolworths/Aldi) $3.00->$3.20

  • +1

Coles homebrand frozen mixed veg $1.60 pre pandemic to $2 now. A 25% jack. If this is not the most basic of basic I don't know what. Where's the 2.5% CPI

  • +2

    (Coles/Woolworths) Home Brand Raw Sugar 1kg $1.10 —-> $1.60
    (Coles/Woolworths) Home Brand Raw Sugar 2kg $2.10 —> $2.80

(Meaning it's actually cheaper to buy CSR when on special for $2.50).

I think it's $2.69 at ALDI, up from ~$2 (need to verify).

    1kg & 2kg

    (Coles/Woolworths) Home Brand White Sugar 1kg $1 —-> $1.50
    (Coles/Woolworths) Home Brand White Sugar 2kg $1.80 —-> $2.20

    1kg

    (Coles/Woolworths) Home Brand White Vinegar 2L $1.20 —> $1.40

  • +4

Almost everything at ALDI. Sneaky price increases by 20c, 40c, etc. across various product lines.
They only mention a select few products they have slightly lowered the prices for within their catalogues.

Milk has also gone up. 2L up to 2.60 (before: 2.39).

  • +1

A while back, but ALDI Mineral Water went from 69c to 95c this year. This was also the case for Coles/Woolworths brand, went from 75c to $1.00

  • -1

    Vibrators

  • +1

Tim Tams when they are on special (I only buy them then) - used to be $1.82 on special but now the cheapest special is $2.00 - haven't seen that $1.82 special for months now.

The supermarkets need to have a new advertising campaign…

Up, up … The prices are up.

    • +1

Didn't see the Coles' pointing down finger signages anymore.

Maybe they are replacing it with "middle finger" signages.

Chicken shop increased their prices twice this year and removed their specials (on the more quieter days) and switched to preferring cash or having a surcharge.

Also noticed grilld burgers have shrunk heaps… It's now smaller than the chips cup

Tech - phones, tablets and laptops etc have also increased.

    • +2

dont support that chicken place anymore - trying to dodge tax

      • -1

thats a ridiculous comment, preferring cash or surcharging cards is a legitimate way of lowering cost of business

        • +1

          It's a fair comment because it's true.

Cash is the go-to medium of exchange for money laundering and other illicit activities.

Cash is anonymous, fungible, and portable; it bears no record of its source, owner, or legitimacy; it is used and held around the world; and is difficult to trace once spent. Additionally, despite its bulk, cash can be easily concealed and transported in large quantities in vehicles, commercial shipments, aircraft, boats, luggage, or packages; in special compartments hidden inside clothing; or in packages wrapped to look like gifts. Criminals regularly attempt to smuggle bulk cash across the United States’ borders using these and other methods.
