The last time that I went to Auto Tech for an aircond problem, they tried to convince me to change almost the entire cooling system, costing me over $2.5K. I went to Ultratune and got it fixed for $250. Only the faulty part was replaced.

Can you leave your car there for them to check, then pick it up later?

If so, $7 is pretty cheap for city parking ;-)

    • I was about to neg this until i saw your message

    • Yes you can. It's not just free parking. You're also giving them full access to your car without your supervision. Hope you drive out with exactly the same parts as you drove in earlier in the day.

pay $7 for rego, but they'll prob write up hudreds $$$ more in uneccesary repairs.

Pay $7 for a safety check, come back with a bill in the thousands for "safety failures"? Is that what you meant?

  • register in Qld then toavoid these kind of stupid 'unexpected expenditures' for every 12-month cycles???

    • If your car is roadworthy nothing should be unexpected, if anything all of Aust should move to a similar system it would help keep more shitboxes off the road….

Avoid ones doing cheap deals like this as theyll just try knock you back on anything they can….

I have experience with cheap rego check. It may cost $7 but they will not give the safety tick until you make thousand of dollars repairs with them first.

    Beware!

    • +1

of course you can get the repairs done ANYWHERE which negates that idea

      • ANYWHERE? come on, they have to find out something they could do. Cought a doggy one before, end up paid $100 just for a pass.

  • I think buyer's should be careful with them. a eSaftey Check is only $30 with a reputable mechanic, do it once, do it right.

  • $7 for a safety check, how much to "Repairs" cost? Not a bargain

i purchased a coupon deal before and my car was fine. they said i had to pay $157 for new windscreen wipers. i said i was going to change the windscreen wipers myself and they said i would have to book back for the pinkslip check and it would take at least 2 weeks.
i could not wait that long for my pinkslip and ended up paying for the new wipers to get the pinkslip check right away.
Plus at that time you had to pay for the engine oil which was more expensive than other places but i knew that in advance.
i was so disappointed i have not gone back even though i have paid for 3 more services (purchased at the same time). Please be very careful with them. went to worldsqare

    • I would report them to fair trading for the $157 wipers.

      • Also report to the MTA at the same time. Then again they'll figure out something fictitious to back up their claim.

  • I'd be weary if they fail a pink slip then enter it into the system - this pretty much remove your rights to shop around for another shop to do the pink slip (while turning a blind eye at smaller, non-life threatening issues) as re-inspection (IIRC) has to be performed by the shop that did the first inspection.
