so you're finally offloading the ones you hoarded

    • -1

      Hi Fuzor,

If a week is hoarding, then sure. note that the part number is slightly different to the original N36L, as they aren't the same one :)
      Happy Friday.

  • Postage is $17.95 to Melbourne as a guide.

  • Good price, however I find n36l not powerful enough to decode 3d bluray. How about n40l?

    • 200Mhz isn't a big enough difference IMO

    • Add a silent video card to either.

      • I have a 5450, no problem with normal bluray, but unwatchable with 3d one.

      • would it work with ATI HD6450? As from reading some sites the ATI HD6450 requires PSU of over 400W?

        • Depends what else you are running. Check the link just above you post.

    • Put in a graphic card like a ati 5450 and it will be fast enough for 3d blueray

      • but for some reason i have a 5450 and still sometimes blurays will stutter… and sometimes even playing rmvb with Mplayerc will also stutter or tears. could this be due to a lack of RAM? (I have a 4GB stick atm).

  • +10

one year later same price? Wut you smoking?

    • +1

      1 x 160GB NHP SATA 7200RPM Hard Disk Drive

      drive is smaller

but this is a good deal… it just seems like the public opinion has turned on this company

i think anyone can see that HP are taking a bath on these units and to expect a lesser price is optimistic

      • You'd probably junk the drive anyway.

    • I'm trying to find a reason to buy one, but can't find any. Any creative uses for these servers? Aside from HTPC.

      • -1

I agree why not just use an older pc lying around and set it up as a file server?

        • +6

          Two words: Power Consumption.

        • +1

          this picture says it all…

          http://b.vimeocdn.com/ts/116/611/116611814_640.jpg

or go thru the pages and pages of text on the past deals

        • -1

I have an old laptop that serves this exact purpose and is on 24/7 how much difference in power consumption could that add up to? Are there any other benefits.
I'm only asking because I want to buy one like everyone else but can't justify the spend..

        • +1

the capital cost saved in reusing existing components is probably going to outweigh any meager savings in power consumption.

        • -1

Repairability, if your laptop goes, it will be much harder to repair, and probably cost more than this box alone. Also reliability, I don't know if I would trust a laptop that is on 24/7 as a backup to my data, especially if it is storing the data internally.

        • Thanks for the thoughts, I have an old Toshiba A300 worth $150 that has been on for around 4 yrs and I connect my WDTV's via wifi this seems to serve the same purpose quite well, and plus I can use it as a laptop.
Having said that I'll probably succumb and buy one to keep up with the Jones s'

        • a laptop running external drives is a fine choice

however its ugly and i don't feel like running crappy $99 2tb drives all day

its your money… if you research and it doesnt work for you that's fine… its only megabuy anyway so who cares

        • You have a point I have a couple of the 1.5 tb usb powered drives ($125 thanks ozbargain) to plug in when needed, but larger volumes would be impractical on a laptop.

  • Bought an N40L the other day, unless there is free delivery I am out. :)

    • nvm

  • +2

Was gonna get it then its the n36l plus its from megabuy. Also they charge 2.5% paypal surcharge which is against paypals terms and conditions. Paypal would wanna know about that

    • Would cool down their offloading hot items via their eBay channel for starters methinks

  • search for feedback on megabuy before buying.

  • Stock Levels accurate?

I can add >40 to cart and it doesn't blink. I feel some refunds being made when they oversell.

    • +1

I would think that a stock level wouldn't move until at least the time of purchase completion. Doesn't mean there system will, just that I think you are expecting it to change too early.

      • Correct, and it will only count CC/PP purchases, bank not until its paid.

If it sells out, it will change on our website.

        Tayla

    • A successful sale is when you've paid the money, thats when the stock level drops. They might have 40 in-stock, probably more, how would you know?? Its probably a tactic they're using to sell 300 of them??

  • +3

I was Interested till I saw it was Megabuy… no thanks…
I rang them about my last order to get tracking information, the parcel arrived before they can communicate with me. Not good enough customer service or communications.

  • +1

Since I will miss out the DSE console got this instead as I needed a NAS. Got already 2 N40L being used as servers. They are good value.

  • +1

Does this come pre-installed with 1 160GB drive, but space for 4?

    • +1

      yes.

      • +2

The 160gb is installed in one of 4 drive bays. You can either remove it or switch it to the 5.25 optical drive bay which runs at sata 1.5gb using a standard 3.5 - 5.25 drive rails. To get the optical drive port to run at full sat 3gb speed you need to install a certain firmware version that has been patched. Doing this will leave you room to install 4 hard drives each with a maximum 3tb capacity.

Currently running one as a HTPC with a low profile 1gb GT520 video card for HDMI video and audio using XBMC Openelec.

        • +1

Thanks for that, it's very useful info.
Is the one your are running the same model, as in same CPU?

        • I have been running the same N36L since they were first released by HP direct @ $199 delivered.

        • I've done this running the OS on the dvd bay on both of mine :)

    • +1

you can get a 5.25" bay to 3.5" HDD adapter so you can put the system/OS HDD where a DVD drive would usually go, which frees up the 4x normal bays for proper storage.

edit: beaten - spent too long reading, g1234567 had a more detailed answer anyway

  • +1

was it 250GB earlier? why 160GB now?

    • +2

HP are cleaning out their crap clogging up their warehouse…

  • +6

Given the awful track record Of megabuy and this exact product I don't think its really worth it.Just days ago they upped the price on the n40L just to f*** with us and claimed its on sale.A bargain should make you feel good not cheated or taken advantage of.

  • +5

I would also have been keen on this if it wasn't megabuy. Almost tempted to neg just cause of seller. Their poor form on here in recent times in other deals to do with microservers makes me not want to deal with them. I suggest others do the same…

EDIT: Actually… I will neg vote. Deal seems good. Seller is dodgey. Buyer beware.

    • -1

      Concur.

  • +16

The 3 words "megabuy", "microserver", and "deal", should not be used together.

Lest we forget all those poor ozbargainers who ordered from the very first microserver deal ever…
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/44381

and who ended up getting deliberately screwed over by megaBuy when they megaBought all the local stock out from under us, and then proceeded to price gouge.

From what I'm reading they are still up to these kinds of tricks.

    So imo, megaBuy == negaBuy.

      negaBuy…

      +1!!!

    • -2

so your taking this out on megabuy because they bought the stock? what they done is smart.. do you think they make heaps of profit on these sales.. after everything they probably walk away with $15 from each sale.. do you expect after sales support when your a cheap arse expecting everything for nothing? obviously, its not what you wanted.. the vendor who posted up the deal to sell the same thing may have been selling the same thing, but it obviously expired when he ran out of stock and your taking it out on megabuy because they bought the stock? are you being serious? they didn't do anything wrong.. what they done was smart and its upto the other vendor to be quick and buy the stock before anyone gets to it or atleast have it reserved.

      • +4

what they done is smart…after everything they probably walk away with $15 from each sale

Ok, using your own math, I'm very interested to know how you would consider getting a massive, vocal & informed consumer base offside for the sake of making $15 per sale in any way smart???

    • +1

      MegaKent….'nuff said.

    • +10

My first -tive ever due to arrogent rep!

      • -5

Negging you because you're not an arrogant speller.

    • +11

The free market economy and freedom of speech in action!

Yep, word of mouth…that's why you still haven't sold them, you guys crapped in your own nest! ;)

    • I am now voting with my feet

    • cya

    • +3

Wow, did you just deliberately sabotage the chance of me ever buying anything from your company or was it an accidental faceroll of epically bad proportions?

    • +3

      Gfy

    • +2

I believe this justify a neg to warn non-savvy buyers of megabuy's unethical business methods.

    • +1

Congrats… Found yourself a quick way to get a neg.

    • +1

      LOL…

  • Not sure about Megabuy but this product for that price is very good.

    • +4

      Good price, but crap reseller…

Not worth the risk and issues…
Many of us remember them.. failing to honour orders and then selling then at 100% markup on EBAY… whilst claiming not to have stock…

There plenty of threads about it around..

  • +3

As others have said, this place has a pretty poor history. I will never support them again.

    Decent price, but buyer beware.

  • +3

A good price from a crappy seller!

  • Taking the seller out of the equation for a moment……
Is the N40L worth the $$ over the N36L?
For a basic user with WHS, downloading a few torrents and streaming videos. No VM's or any of that other techy stuff.

    • $50 good sir/madam.

      That is all.

      • Yeah I noticed that, I just don't see the point of having two of the exact same things for difference prices.

  • +13

Due to the negatives comments I've decided not to take the risk.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

  • +5

As one of the people that got screwed the first time around by Negabuy, I later bought one at about the $250 price point. I would still rather pay someone else $250 than $170 to these guys for the exact same thing.

    • +2

Cool device too btw. Threw in a Radeon 6450 and an extra 4GB of RAM and it happily hums away as a HTPC/all-purpose dev box. Capable of playing 1080p mkv's and runs the Atlassian suite more than satisfactorily.

      • What do you do for -sound- from an N36L?

Same Q, also, for Ubuntu Studio?

        Anyone know?

  • +1

Missed out on the previous deal due to these bastards!

  • The rep of Negabuy is scary enough for me not to even consider buying anything from them, even if it's 50% off the cheapest price. Chances are you won't get it. So why bother?

  • 22 left

  • I dont have a problem with megabuy. I just bought the 40l from these guys this week and received in Bundy today shipping from the other place that couldn't give a delivey date was $40 bucks to bundy compared to these guys $15. I currently have the 36L running Unraid. 1080p mkv streaming with PS3 media server no problems, run sickbeard, nzb's and couch potato and Plex. Applied russian hack to get full 3gb sata speeds instead of 133mb installed 5.25 to 3.5 inch HHD dock in optical drive. Bough lian li esata to 2.5inch HDD cable and installed 60gb ssd for cache drive. Now have 8tb of storage with partity. Oh and 8gb of RAM

Doing the exact same setup with the 40l now. So for $169.00 this is a bargin and i've bought of Megabuy 5 times and never had an issue. Whilst their shipping calculations suck!!! $15 for Microserver + 4gb ram $15

  • hmm… Seemed like a good price was considering purchasing.

Shame too many unhappy customers from the past, there's nothing for me here i guess.

  • +2

    Megabuy…haha need I say anymore…

    • for a valid neg, yes… you must :/

      • Read every other neg in this deal or any other Megacrap postings on this site or Whirlpool….

  • +1

Also calling bullshit on either your website or your claim to limited stock.

why does your website allow me to put 41 of these in my cart when there are only 40 available?

  • +6

Don't care what the deal is, I will not deal with a group of scummy, anti-competitive liars like Megabuy.

  • +2

    .

  • Yeah, what they said.

  • Hey guys how does this work. i am a noob looking for a NAS but think this might be better.

My setup is a adsl2 wifi router and want to connect this to the router. Have got ethernet cable to study and entertainment room. I would like to watch dvd and blu ray rips from this server on my tvs. 1 has LAN port and the other has a WDLive player.

Will i need a GPU to help encode the blu ray rips even though i will be watching it on my tv?

    • The NAS is just going to the file server where you store all your mkv files. As long as your networking through the same router it should be a piece of cake to set up.
Depending on what operating system you choose to install.
      No GPU or anything required.

  • Would the 150W PSU be enough to power:- 5x 3TB WD30EZRS Green HDDs (4x in raid bays, 1x in 5.25" bay w/ rack) + LP Passive HD6450 + 8GB DDR3 1333 + LP PCIe USB3 card (would 1x PCIe be bottlenecked)?

    • -1

      Nooooo. Keep dreaming haha.

  • +2

We see they do NOT show "7200 RPM" for the 160 GB drive, so this may be UK stock (as seen in YouTube videos, in past).

The N36L's price is back up - now: $219.95

And a more costly N40L is shown beside it (all this on the front page of vendor's web site.

    Thanks for the heads-up, folks.

    ORDER -CANCELLED-

Too bad… we'd have loved to have it…

  • +11

Vote BAN this seller out of OzBargain

    • Does it work and how?

    • +1

      Such an arrogant seller.
