Some studies show it can be an effective treatment for covid as well. See FLCCC recommendations

    • +3

Probably as effective at treating COVID as inhaling the freshly released flatus of a wild boar

      • +2

Where can one procure said wild boar?

      • +5

        Data says otherwise
11 different studies average a 78% improvement when used in early treatment

        From a news article -

Melatonin, a dietary supplement often used by insomnia sufferers, could be used to possibly help prevent or treat COVID-19, according to researchers at the Cleveland Clinic.

The hormone — which regulates the sleep-wake cycle — was associated with an almost 30 percent reduced likelihood of contracting the disease, the scientists said in research published in the journal PLOS Biology, KIRO 7 reported.

          I didn't neg ya btw.

Interesting but still the data doesn't show it is an effective treatment. The data in the C19 link is very weak to say the least

          The NYpost link states:

"Additional studies are required about the over-the-counter supplement, the researchers said.

“It is very important to note these findings do not suggest people should start to take melatonin without consulting their physician,” lead researcher Feixiong Cheng of the Cleveland Clinic’s Genomic Medicine Institute said in a statement, WebMD reported.

“Large-scale observational studies and randomized controlled trials are critical to validate the clinical benefit of melatonin for patients with COVID-19,” he added. “But we are excited about the associations put forth in this study and the opportunity to further explore them.”

        • +1

          'Associated' doesn't hold much meaning.

          Causation >> correlation.

          You need RCT.

        • The NYPost article is almost a year old, a lot has changed since then, we have many vaccines which is more than 10 times as effective, proven and won't require you to take it at the right time.

The best treatment for covid once you get it would be antibodies, e.g. https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/new-treatment-coul… those are far more effective and expensive, you need to be in the health system to get that in time, so any time you waste at home could mean you miss the chance to get a treatment that will work and keep you alive.

  • Was literally just looking at melatonin on iherb.
10mg is what I've tried recently. Lifetime insomniac

    • Has this genuinely helped you sleep better?

      • +1

If I go on holiday I don't take it with me as some countries don't allow it and after a week I sleep badly.

Never not been asleep within 30 mins of going to bed even after funerals and work stress

        • My understanding is that by taking Melatonin supplements the body will become dependent on them, so what you're saying makes sense. Once you take them away, it's quite common for people to experience sleep issues. These eventually go away though, as long as the underlying reasons have been addressed.

They can be a great short term option, but ideally it's good to work on techniques to increase the production of melatonin and also how to avoid resetting it in the body by light in the evenings, etc.

It's another handy supplement at times though 🙂

          • @mrbargainz: Thank you Dr Bargainz

    • Looks like they don't have 10mg in this brand.

    • +4

10mg is a lot. I hope you started on a lower dose and worked your way up if that wasn't enough. I would suggest 3mg is enough for most people. Usually the standard melatonin is enough for people (ie gets them to sleep and they do the rest from there), but if they keep waking up at night, try the timed release. I've heard some people with bad sleep use the standard and the timed at once - ie the normal gets them to sleep and the timed keeps them asleep. I would suggest getting your doctors advice though (especially if having more than 3mg).

      • Chronic insomniac. Gets to the point of exhaustion and just need to sleep.
        2mg doesn't do anything.
Good idea about the slow release on top of a regular.

        • Also follow the non medical tips to help sleep -
shift work stuffed my cycle up - I quit my job and it took me about 3 months to return to "normal"

        • Really? I heard 300mcg works even better in another thread.

        • A family member uses this one which is slow release, works well and the 5htp good for mood

          • @Helenn: Thanks for the recommendation. OOS ATM unfortunately.

15% cash back with 20% off code is a good deal

      • +1

I’m not an insomniac but I’ve been occasionally using 3mg for years and it’s perfect for me.
Works excellent when you’re jet legged too

  • I thought that melatonin was prescription only in oz

    • +2

Recently became over the counter, but yes prior

      • +1

Over the counter is sustained release for over 55s but it cost me a over $45 for 30 tablets.
I've gone back to sub lingual fast release melatonin from iherb. Delivery is usually around a month.
As I am shift worker struggle to get to sleep ( staying asleep easy once there).
        Used this one for years.

Yeah it's very good for your situation
I've never waited more than 10 days to get mine

  • I use this liquid melatonin…

    Just stocked up again

  • +2

Natrol 10mg is the only one I use from iherb. That is fairly decent and has some effect, time release is the best option for me.

  • +3

I find the 21st Century brand works well & it's cheaper.
Asleep in ~30min for 6-7hrs & wake up refreshed.
