Have been looking for an upgrade of my WD My Cloud EX2, since they are discontinuing support for the My Cloud OS that mine uses next year.
Looked around for a while for something with 4 bays and is just entry levelish, but bang for buck. Synology was always top of the list.
So found this for a great price today.
Synology DiskStation DS420j NAS $389 + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Mwave

Yes you're right, if it's your first afterpay transaction.
Oh and also free shipping for this as well.
Add another 0 after the number of drives and I’m in!
That’s a good price for an entry level kitAnyone know if you can run plex server on a more powerful synology (i have one already) and just mount/use this as a second nas as a way to expand storage?
Thanks, i have actually tried that to mount shared folders on my windows 10 PC and could never get it working (despite other devices working fine). No idea why it never works, but sounds like 2 Synology NAS will happily talk to each other.
EDIT: OK, that guide worded things ever so slightly differently i realized what i was doing wrong including my hostname when its not required. Now i can mount share from my PC i should be able to point Plex to it as well if need be.
Have used synology nas devices for years & doubt will change anytime soon, can often get these at a great price compared to others & very reliable, also fantastic support, haven't had any problems without being quickly resolved, highly recommend minimum 2 bay so you can mirror hard drive in case 1 fails, had a few hard drives fail but not a synology nas.
Well worth it. I have 418j and very happy with it. Except I ran out of storage now (4x4TB SHR-1) so l waiting for 920+ with 4x 8TB😁
Device deal have the 920+ for $800 at the moment.
Was $735 at the beginning of the month. I opted to wait for Cyber Monday. Hopefully won't be disappointed
I did the same thing, but it doesn't look like any great NAS deals today (Cyber Monday) unfortunately!
How have you neen using the 418j? Used plex and 4k media? I have a 918+ and thinking of getting a 420j for more storage.
I dont use plex but have 4k media via DLNA/Media server. Doesn't 918+ have the expansion port instead of getting second unit (another Ethernet port)?
The expansion units here cost about as much as a 920+…. so vastly more expensive than this 420j.
Anyone know if this unit is quiet enough to use in a home office space, or needs shutting away in a cupboard?
I have the 418j in the cupboard under the TV. Can't hear a thing any time of the day. But it's generally very quiet
Typically it's the HDDs that will make the most noise depending on what the drives are. For example, Seagate Ironwolfs are noisier than WD Reds.
Price appears to have increased to $429?
This one doesn't support BTRFS to prevent bit-rot? I think you need the next one up for that.

I believe you are correct.
It says you'd get $30 discount with Afterpay too.
