Nikon D5100 Body Only $529 + Shipping - Kogan

130

I was browsing Kogan website and notice they've lowered their price for Nikon D5100. Bargain price for a good camera. This would be $558 shipped to my door whereas it's currently $579 on DWI

D5100 + 18-55 kit lens is $619 which is also a good price

I'm now so tempted to get this one as my second body instead of D7000 but I'll try to be good (ie wait until D7000 price drops). The reasons I'm not getting this over D7000 is
- it's not 100% coverage viewfinder, and the viewfinder is actually quite small compared to D7000's
- no dedicated ISO button. although you can assign Fn for this but it doesnt feel right
- no top panel LCD to display shooting info
- only 1 main dial instead of 2 (1 front & 1 back) of D7000
- wont work with my 50 1.8D lens since it does not have a built in motor. That's fine for me since I already have a D90 for that

Other than that this little camera has lots of advantages
- great picture quality since it uses the same sensor with D7000
- more than half the price
- lighter & smaller
- has flip out screen
- built-in HDR & effect modes (I like Color sketch in particular)
- does full HD video with continuous auto-focus 30fps

OK enough said, hope you like it.

the d7000 is more than twice the price so you're comparing a base BMW 3 to a BMW 5 really

the 5100 should be due for a replacement soon

    • the 5100 is not due for replacement - there is no new sensor out unless you count the 24mpx sony sensor.
However the d7000 replacement should be using this sensor and would get the upgrade first. Anyways, no new replacement is on the horizon.

  • This is a really great price for this camera.

  • Get a camera with the in built motor, i got this camera (first slr) and really ally love learning with it and using it but.. I've got to a stage where I want more lens but because it needs a auto focus motor in the lens they generally cost alot more.. So if you know what you're doing with an slr up grade to the d7000.

  • The d5100 is my favorite nikon and i have the d700/d300 and a wall of awsome gear to play with but this camera puts them to shame (if you have it setup right) with vivid/auto hdr and get the most basic off camera flash. Shot a wedding with 2 shooters with all three cameras and use all the images from the d5100 - this thing is freakin amazing! Small, light, compact and powerfull its my favorite camera…

  • Damn, you got me looking at prices for this thing now… must try to resist, at least until morning.

  • Sweet! I'm saving up for this but am not planning to get it for a few more months. Hope the price stays as good by then.

Can anyone recommend a good lens for this please?

Tamron 17-50mm (non VC) would be a good start instead of the 18-55mm.

    • +2

I just got Tamron 18-270 from JB Hifi last week. Pretty damn good so far, I'm impressed.

      • Agreed.. Have been using this lens and its a great all round lens. Its not perfect, but can do almost everything quite well. Most reviews were unable to really flame this lens (unless you are a professional photographer). Their warranty is also quite genereous on this lens.

        • They are like $350-$400?

Sick. Thanks morphio, am reading the amazon reviews and getting quite excited over this. I very much love sharp photos

+1 for summarizing pros and cons. For someone who is considering getting a DSLR for the first time it helps to have it all listed like that, which then makes it worth going off to research when you don't know where to start.

  • the other great thing about the D5100 is the very subtle shutter sound. really soft, will rarely disturb your subject :)

Kogan's D5100 body only is the cheapest atm.

The lens kit, its actually from cheaper from DWI. I am just waiting for those free delivery special on Kogan before I jump in.

  • it has gone up to $549 guys. I think they're probably monitoring Ozbargain lolz!

    • Doesnt really matter to me, I am eyeing the lens kit package 18-55mm. It is still cheaper from DWI.
