  If you're after just the av/anti-malware/firewall, stick with Windows defender. The notion of it being bad is outdated.

    Totally disagree but respect your opinion , Windows defender is only alive because MS throws it for free to Enterprise customers (free R&D). A very simple search about MS defender efficiency and specially market share (which reflects efficiency) shows where it stand. First action in any new windows installation is to turn it of and replace it with a decent one IMO.

      As I said, from a pure av/am/fw perspective it's very good. As good or better than most. Technically there are some that are a smidge better, but you'd be splitting hairs to go for the absolute highest, and annoying a user more with all the popups from other AVs and putting them at more risk if they fail to renew.

      If you're after VPNs, parental controls, etc it doesn't offer that itself.

      Depending on who you're giving a "decent one" to, you're potentially doing them a disservice.
