  • Any rebates from gov for low income families

    • Hi mate,

So the prices you see advertised are after the Gov rebates. We do have cheaper systems if that would help you?

      • I heard there was a recent rebate that significantly reduced the cost for low income families

        • So i've done some research for you. It's a Government run program that is being trialled.

          Here's the link for you.

          https://www.energysaver.nsw.gov.au/browse-energy-offers/hous…

          • @Nathan94: Cool. Im in canterbury bankstown area.
Ill contact you or feel free to pm me when the area is included in the trial

            • @easternculture: No problem at all mate, not entirely sure how the trial will work. I'm not sure if they would give the contracts to other installation companies or keep the work in house with their own Government contractors

  • Any offers/rebates for battery purchases in the same area?

    • Hi mate,

No rebates as of yet unfortunately. Hopefully there may be some in the not to distant future.

  • How much on average does it cost to install solar panels?

Just curious, in ACT so can't use your offer, but 1500 people have claimed the 15k rebate and there's heaps of second hand $500-1000 6kw systems popping up.

Do you think they're worth it? Or is it better to just buy new?

I'd assume most places wouldn't want to install old panels?

    • +1

      Hey mate,

So i am unsure of those rebates, I have never heard of them before for the ACT. The panel sizes you have shown are very very old stock.

With the rebates how they are at this point in time as well as the current technology levels personally i'd buy new. But everybody's situation will be different in terms of budgeting

      • Thanks for answering! Yeah, they're quite old stock… clearly, people are upgrading with the loan and flipping 'em for pennies. And very sorry for my wording, it's not a rebate, it's an interest-free 15k loan/10yr repayment with no fees/interest. So functionally, I'm looking at ~15k worth of upgrades to solar, heat pumps, batteries etc. Just figuring out the best options.

        If you're curious - https://www.climatechoices.act.gov.au/policy-programs/sustai…

I can't find the recent Canberra Times article, but it claimed ~1550 applicants with 50% going for solar. Apparently SolarHub had to hire 4 new electricians lol

    • Yeah, you can't install stuff for the grid if it's not on the current approved list, and things fall off that list pretty quickly. You also won't get STCs and so on. Used gear is almost always not usable for people wanting a regular solar sysatem.

      • Which is annoyingly backwards. Like the point is sustainability right? Yet we can't reuse these expensive silicon panels which'll probably end up in land-fill.

        • Correct. OTOH, it's being connected to the public grid, so you can understand the hesitancy to let any old stuff be wired into it.

        • That is what many people said from the very beginning. Noone was listening.
In this generation of panels, you probably find enough people for DIY projects on sheds, etc.
But this is a limited market. After that is saturated - it will be landfill. I would not be surprised if in a near future the cost of disposal will have to be charged to customers and then those panels will be recycled using those funds.

        • there are a few people around that pick up the older unused panels and donate them to villages in Africa.

    • If you have the skills to install them, then ok.
But then home and contents wont cover your electricals if not installed by a licensed electrician

    • I probably would use those for a DIY 1 panel portable system with a cheap controller - instead of those cheap 12V panels on ebay and aliexpress. Or install on RV, etc.
Possibly as a DIY project on a large shed, not connected to the grid.
But the cost of installing them properly on the roof, connecting the inverter to the grid (L2 electrician) and no warranty, no STCs - it may end up same price as a new system.
My strategy - use as much of my roof space with new panels, get hybrid inverter and be ready for batteries. Using old panels you are wasting precious real estate on your roof.

      • Cheers. Yeah, I originally thought it would be good for the old man's RV (he's an electrician too) and/or my house. Like I can see three 6kws right now for ~$500. They're older and running ~24 240w panels instead of this deal with 16 420kw.

The main issue is installation, most electricians I contacted won't do it/certify it. It's just not worth their time with the new loan schemes keeping them busy.
