  • Maybe price beat at OW?

Such a shame how the 4 and 5tb models are double thiccness. Makes them no good to shuck for many sff applications (eg lian li q58 only takes 7.5mm drives).

  • +3

Why are these cheaper than internal Hard Drives :(

      • +18

But you need to compare it to other HD, not NVME/SSD

  • How come this 2TB drive is cheaper than the 1TB Samsung above this?

    • +7

      These aren't solid state drives.

  • Is the 2TB shuckable, eg. for a PS4?

    • +3

They all are shuckable, id be running an SSD in a ps4 tho.

      • The thiccboi 4/5TB won't fit in the PS4.

        • I just need storage for my ps5! Can we run an extra SSD inside it to run games?

          • +3

@[Deactivated]: Yeah, but not a 2.5" SSD though.

You'll need it to be PCIe Gen4, 1-4TB, 5500MB/s read speed or faster, 22mm width (do not go for 25mm units) and it needs a heatsink cause it's gonna get hot.

            • @BurnZ: How much are these? Sounds like alot of effort
Maybe better to just transfer off the external drive etc

              • @[Deactivated]: What is Effort ?

              • @[Deactivated]: It's a little bit of effort but Sony is being particular in what will work with the PS5 so it'll have great performance. So it's worth the effort. You'll be looking at under $200 depending on the capacity. There's deals posted on here all the time and usually someone comments saying if they're PS5 compatible or not.

I bought it this this morning for this exact reason. Friends all have external hdds no ssds and it runs fine. I remember reading somewhere that these hdds are even faster then what they out inside the ps4 so you can actually get better performance. For $70 and not have to keep downloading gta each time is worth to for me

Awesome - 4TB for $99 with the AMEX offer!

  • Should I buy the 2tb……. Hmm

  • +2

Same price at OW, JB, HN, Bing Lee.

    • Probably should of bought at JB and just bought gift cards with Amazon but I lose track!

      • can you buy jb gift cards from amazon?

  • +1

same price in ebay . had 10$ coupon brining it to 59$ - good price 2TB

  • If you shuck for a pc, do you need a 2.5-to-3.5″ adapter?

    • If you dont have any 2.5inch mounting spot then technically yes you just need a physical adapter… BUT…. you can always just tape it down :D.. The sata and power connectors are the same regardless of 2.5 or 3.5 drives

    • Or use zip ties to some part of the case internals. Just make sure it has some air flow to keep it cool.

  • Any chance we will see similar 4tb usb drives at around $100 as we regularly had before? Have been keeping an eye for the last 2-3 months…

  • does western digital have the same performance as seagate?

    they have a 5TB that's a bit cheaper

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Western-Digital-Elements-Portable-…

  • Is the desktop expansion better if you don't really need the portability (sp?)

    • It is but it is cumbersome, I have maybe 5 of them but prefer the smaller without PSU 2.5s which I have a few.

      • Thanks, the expansion has the 3.5" 7200rpm drives right but are they better/ faster / more reliable?

        • +1

Not always 7200RPM, 5400RPM, as for reliability, well I just transfer data and unplug, speed wise well I guess 3.5 are a little quicker, and as for reliability. That's hard to tell due to hit and miss, you can read all the reviews you want and you get failures, but ask yourself why you want this, that should be the right answer regardless of t he previous q's, you will still get failures, it's just the nature of cheaper drives imo.
I normally back up 2 times, so just make sure what ever drive you get it isn't the only back up you have.

  • So are these any good as an external drive for ps5? What's the actual time to reinstall a game?

    • Yes good back up drives, around 110 MBps transfer, so 6.6 TB would take 60 seconds theoretically. Write and read are 2 different things so saving to the drive would take long than transferring to the PS5.

      • +2

        6.6GB should take 60 seconds. 6.6TB would take 1000min.

        • +1

Yeah that should have been GB not TB, my bad.

  • +2

    thank you, bought the dip!

  • are these drives on par with their back-up plus range?

  • +1

4TB - $109 delivered through Amazon App using code Max10.

  • +1

    4tb no longer on sale

    • yeah that was defs the sweet spot

  • +1

    yeah 4tb is gone…

    • $119 everywhere currently. OW , JB etc.

  • I've seen both the Seagate expansion and WD elements on sale recently on catalogues e.g. Harvey Norman vs OW.

Is the Seagate expansions superior to or similar to WD elements?.given prices may be similar say for 4 GB models which would someone recommend? Is it true as someone mentioned above the speeed of the Seagate is faster for read/write?

Durability and quality I presume both are like for like?

  • 4TB are back.

    • for $125.00 and "Usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months. "

      • Nah at the time there were 1 and then 2 in stock at original discounted price. Then it went back up. And now it's apparently partly back down.

    • went down to JB and grabbed the seagate for $119.

      • Yeah I'm hoping for Amazon though cos of all the credit/gift cards that just happened.
Though my CommBank did offer $10 off a $50 min purchase

  • Thanks OP, I got a 4TB to replace a 2TB drive that is nearly full.
It worked with my Windows 10 laptop but my Beyonwiz PVR couldn't recognise the files on it.
I had to reformat the 4TB volume from exFAT to NTFS (using Paragon Partition Manager), and copy the files onto it again.
I copied a few and confirmed that it worked with the Beyonwiz.
Now I'm copying the rest. Transfer speed is around 105 MBps - 1.7GB will take about 5 hours.
