30-Day Free Trial of Paramount Plus (Instead of 7 Days) @ Paramount Plus

1892
OASIS

30 day free trial of Paramount Plus (instead of the usual 7) using the promo code OASIS (Note: must select annual plan to get code to work).

Enter the code on the last screen of the signup process where you put in your card details (click "Have a promotional code?"). From testing it appears that the code only works if you selected the annual plan, not the monthly one. You can still cancel before the end of the trial without being charged if you don't want to continue using the service, but obviously set a reminder etc or cancel immediately and you can use it to the end of the free trial period.

Deal is a tie up with the band Oasis, with their Knebworth documentary being added to the service over the weekend: https://www.oasisinet.com

  • I doubt it, but I wonder if this will also work with this deal-

ViacomCBS (Paramount) can go and get flapped after last week's shenanigans with Netflix and Star Trek Discovery.

    • +34

Regardless of who, they're entering too late.

Between disney, netflix and stan, Australia has a huge range, and most people i speak to arent going to "pay for another service?!"

      To add insult to injury;

iView and SBSOnDemand are wayyyyy less restrictive now, and have a good range. For a total of zero dollars! DrWho alone keeps me and several mates entertained.

Still not 'free to watch anything' but jeez if you were doing it hard and needed to save some coin, those two services alone do have 'something for everyone'.

Paramount just isnt big enough to survive alone (in this space).

Non weeb teens have 'finally' found anime, thanks to netflix; plus their usual tastes for other shows.

      The children have abc.

Young adults have several long running series available.

And the oldies have a massive movie collection to 'rent' on amazon for a buck…

If this new service takes off, im going to be genuinely surprised…

      • +7

I think they were very smart to get the aleague. I know of several people who have signed up primarily just to watch the aleague on it, I also know of a handful of people who have signed up for all of south park. Most of these people say they're leaving netflix and going with D+, amazon prime and paramount+

        • -2

A-league isnt exclusive though, 10Play also got the rights.

Im sure paramount will offer something extra as a paid service; but its an interesting reason.

          • +5

            @MasterScythe: 10play = Paramount.

Channel 10 and 10play have got 1 game on free to air a week, the Saturday night game.

All games, replays, mini matches etc are on Paramount+

            • +2

@TightTerry: Rip aleague. What a dumpster fire of an organisation. At least Foxtel had some viewers baked in.

              • +6

@Garyd123: Paramount have invested $300 million into the game and league in this country giving it a massive lifeline. For the first time ever we have a Saturday game a week live on free to air TV. Foxtel were investing nothing into the game

                • +1

@TightTerry: The streaming quality of the victory game on Saturday was horrific.

I signed up just for the a-league, there isn’t much else to watch on it.

                  • +2

@Blakus: Yeah it was absolutely shocking - they have had a host of issues which was always going to happen launching a live sport platform. Hopefully they will iron out their issues over the next couple of weeks. Let’s not forget the Optus debacle and how bad they were

                • @TightTerry: Foxtel built the A-league, although I’m sure you’re aware of that.

                • +1

@TightTerry: I hope you're right but I really feel it's a big mistake from viewer numbers for soccer in Australia. Money will only get you so far, the fans are the important bit

                  • @Garyd123: I'm glad A-League is on a steaming service that we only have to pay a few bucks a month for (don't care if it's paramount or anyone else).
I would never pay for Foxtel or Kayo price wise, just for A-League.
I have no interest in AFL or NRL and Kayo is $25 a month, no thanks.
So for the first time I can get all games for 2 cups of coffee a month :)

      • iView and SBSOnDemand

        Nope too many ads

        • +8

          The cost of being "free".
I'd probably pay a few bucks for an ad-free FullHD SBS On Demand… some great stuff on there.

          • +8

@ESEMCE: Agree, SBS is slept on so much, amazing content on there.

        • +4

I use Allavsoft to download stuff from SBSOnDemand and watch it later - it cuts out the ads.

          • +1

            @anonymous_coward: Paid software?

            • +1

@Charlie Dont Surf: Yes. It's not overly expensive though - $19.99USD and a one-off payment - not a subscription. It gets constantly updated too.

I first got it free from bitsdujour - obviously the free version doesn't include updates. It comes back free at BDJ occasionally - I just checked and it's being sold on that site for $18USD atm.

              • +1

@anonymous_coward: Thanks for the info. I guess my concern with paying for it is that SBS will figure out how to neuter the software at some stage. I was using some freeware in the past to DL, but then SBS updated its site somehow and it no longer worked.

                • +1

@Charlie Dont Surf: Yes I know what you mean - some websites have become harder to download from for a while now. 10play is hit & miss but at times it's OK again when Allavsoft updates. It works well on most 7plus and 9 but an occasional show won't download. Never had a problem using it on iView (or BBC, STV - some other UK websites - if using a VPN to access that site). I've never had a problem with SBS either so far - been using it with them for around 3 years. But SBS will not work with an adblocker - either when just watching live or downloading. It always knows I have the blocker on. Hence the reason why I just download them from there.

                • +1

@Charlie Dont Surf: About once a week I find that Allavsoft will not download SBS programs. I download and install the Allavsoft update and it works again.

            • +1

              @Charlie Dont Surf: use YouTube-dl

              • @Ryk: I've tried but I just find the UI too difficult and that makes me lose motivation.

        • I run an ad blocker; never knew that had ads.

Still, i guess thats their 'free' thing.
Block them if you dont like them.

          • @MasterScythe: Do you just play through the browser to allow the adblock to work? Are there any methods to do this at the router level for chromecast/smart tv?

            • @Hinee: Yeah, just using the browser.
I have android sticks on all my TV's, so they run firefox with the uBlockOrigin plugin.

I also have a pihole on my network.

I see blocks for prime, disney, youtube, and stan on my pihole; but i dont see any obvious ones for iview, so they could be browser level. Ublock doesnt have logging enabled.

      • +2

+1 to SBS On Demand and to a lesser extent iView.

Like Disney, Paramount own loads of content and it would cost them peanuts to expand the service to new markets.
IMHO they're the two most likely to survive solely cause they are content companies with massive back-catalogues and ongoing content creation plans.

Of your list, I think Stan will be the one to die unfortunately.
They're going to run out of content with all these big International players coming to market and no longer licensing their IP.
Binge will also be gone if HBO ever launch in AUS.

        • I dont understand why stan stops offering episodes mid-season on finished shows.
Thats my only complaint. RegularShow has every season but the last? It was shown on FTA (i watched it there) so they have the rights…

On the upside, their website is by far the least buggy; their design team will be snapped up, if they fold.

          • +1

@MasterScythe: Last season of regular show is not worth watching.
You need to switch to Close Enough on Netflix. It’s made by the same guy who made regular show

            • @Kuzdog: Seen that too. It was OK. Hes quite a decent voice actor too; even though hes just typecast himself twice :p he emotes well.

And ive seen the last season; it was pretty OK.
Missing the fun 80s callbacks, but still OK.

Just wanted to "finish the series" was all.

      • One thing about the internet and the digital age is that you are never too late to enter any online market. If they invest big bucks then they can easily pull a number of the big players away from the other platforms. There are 1000’s that are signing up for the A-league since the move from Fox. Paramount only just missed out on the premier league as well. If they land more leagues and sport then people will always switch

      • crunchyroll + animelab has a good range of streaming anime. Only found Crunchyroll three years ago, so must be others like me around…

        • I used to use crunchyroll; but buying dvds from Japan was more fun.

The subtitle files are usually free and easy to find.

Load the subtitles into VLC and away you go!

Funimation is available in AU now, free, also. for unedited things like InitialD.

      • IMO Disney and prime are worth it rest are not

Disney has nostalgic stuff, Prime included with prime delivery, music, free games much worth it.

    • Is the new season of Star Trek Discovery even available on Paramount Plus? A news story I was reading said that because of the move, it's going to be delayed for Australia.

      • +5

Correct. Won't be "officially" streamed here until some time next year.

      • +7

        Idiots!
Incoming news article on Australian Piracy imminent…

    • +3

I can't google search at work, did they pull Discovery off Netflix and put it on this crappy service?

      • +3

Yep, 2 or 3 days before season 4 was supposed to start they announced it'll be on Paramount+ only but in Aust, not until 2022 for some reason. On top of that seasons 1 - 3 were pulled from Netflix. I didn't particularly like the show but that's not the way to treat your fan base.

        • +1

thanks for that. Hadn't even heard about that . I've watched the first 3 seasons on Netflix, but won't bother with Paramount+ just for that for season 4. it's not THAT great to pay for another service, or I will wait till season 4 comes out and watch it over the 7 day free trial period lol

        • But the first two episodes of Season 4 are already on there?

          https://www.paramountplus.com/shows/star-trek-discovery/

          • @dazweeja: Yeah, ViacomCBS back tracked and decided to make it available Nov 26 for markets that already have Paramount+.

Apparently as an apology there's a code STARTREK for 50% off the first 3 months of a Paramount+ subscription

            • @apsilon: Ha, what a debacle! I had a look around at the other shows on there and I can't see myself paying for it anytime soon.

      • +11

For this reason alone ill be pulling out the old pirate hat.

    • +3

Agreed. I was part of the original Netflix viewership. It's one of the very few shows I stay subbed for. To pretty much yank it with a few days notice and move it to a new streaming service was a massive middle finger and "fukc you" to their audience. This whole situation is bonkers and people are going to go back to pirating.

    • Yep, such greedy arses. And its not available to regions outside of US and CA either. They're just pushing potential customers to piracy. They were willing to pay money already and Paramount is asking for more.

      • f them.. how many streaming services do you need or should pay for.. not more than a couple imo

        • Thats so true. Its like Foxtel but you pay extras for 'premium channels' and doing paywall shit. But I think they realised that customers pause their subscriptions during the low seasons and they figured that the total available market is still sustainable. Hence we get BS like this.

    • +1

      Don't look back in anger

  • Just dont forget to cancel in time, before a whole annual charge applies. Unless you want it, of course.

    • +11

You can cancel as soon as you hit sign up and you still get your full 30 days of free service. I just did this now

    • Yeah definitely higher risk highish reward with this one haha

  • +12

You can also cancel instantly after subscription, just so you don't forget later. Still have a free month

    • Do you mean you can cancel the renewal but still have the free month?

      • Yes

      • Yes.
Goes for pretty much every subscription service.

        • except Stan.

I found when I went to cancel the trial it gives you a warning that your service will be terminated instantly, instead of when the trial period ends like everyone else.

          • @Nos 4r2: Oh that sucks.
I used a Stan free trial years ago and don't remember that happening, if they've changed it that's pretty scummy.
In cases like that set an alert a few days before expiry.

  • Just signed up yesterday. Doh! Any chance I can still get this?

    • +4

      Genuinely curious, why?
Do you not have other streaming services?
Did one of the 'exclusives' tempt you that much?
Are you a huge TV consumer?

No judgement, you're just honest to god the first person ive heard say they jumped on the bandwagon.

      • +3

        I'll take a guess and say A-League.

They've got the rights for it this year.

        • +4

A-league deal is good, 99 dollars + 2 home game tickets

        • -3

But so did 10Plus, ALeague isnt exclusive broadcast for them.

      • A Dexter Fan Perhaps. It's an option to get Showtime without Foxtel. Quit a lot of good content on Showtime.
Decent blockbuster movies (I like Netflix series, but 99% of their movies are woke rubbish with terrible acting). Although Red Notice exceeded expectations.
Lots of Decent TV shows for the Kids Like Nancy Drew.

Interface is budget, many of the old series are unwatchable due to super low resolution.

I signed up for like $6 per year but see they fixed that, and my sub will renew at full price. Doubt I will renew.

      • -2

No judgement, did you honestly think in the whole of Australia no one would be interested?

        • No judgement felt :)

And, No. Nobody said or implied that, what made you assume that?

      • +4

The A-league has got 100,000 members + more fans that can only watch the league through Paramount. Channel 10 has one game on FTA but that’s hardly enough if you want to watch the league every week

        • Thats fair.

Im one of those folks who honestly forget that couch sports exist.
Im not being dismissive, i often genuinely forget until 'origin' rolls around each year (or someone reminds me, like now).

I grew up with 'going to the game' or 'playing the game'; we weren't a sport TV household.

We watched HeyHey its Saturday, and Sale of the Century, then it was bed or books or lego.

Never got exposed to the 'sport thing' from home :)

          • +1

@MasterScythe: Sports rights are huge money at the moment. It’s becoming painful being a football fan and more widely a sports fan as you need multiple different platforms just to watch all the leagues you used to watch on maybe 1. Paramount paid $300 million for the A-league.

Optus sports has the EPL and a few other leagues and that currently has over a million subscribers in Aus

    • +1

You're all wrong, I just enjoy a good deal

And I want to watch Dexter..

      • Yes for Dexter! Got to do the weekly wait though for the next episode to drop :( I just finished rewatching the last 2 seasons to get back into it. Hopefully they keep to the 12 episode per season format and don't drop it to 10 or less.

  • +11

I put all my subscriptions and how much I pay on a spreadsheet last weekend… it's amazing how much it all adds up to.

A friend suggested putting in next to each how much you watch per week… you realise it's not a lot. No matter how unemployed and lazy you are, there's only so much you can watch.

    • +4

this would make a good article/youtube video

what is the cost per hour/episode?

      • I don't have the actual spreadsheet with me, at home PC.

But high level numbers, I am currently watching 6 shows weekly. These shows average about 45 mins. So you're talking about 4 hours of streaming per week and I currently have Netflix, Amazon, Binge, Disney and Stan.

If I had to keep one, maybe two from the above, it would be Netflix (just too used to it) and Prime (cheap). The others are a luxury and nice to have.

Edit- this does not include all the sports streaming either… Kayo, NBA League Pass and BeIn on top.

        • +3

I tend to cycle through them, and it works well. Do a month of each on a slow rotation, by the time you get back to the start there's plenty of new content for the month. Keep it an extra month if you need the time to get through an entire show or something.

Most of them are really easy to cancel and resubscribe. Plus, if it's 6 months before you get back to the first one you might be eligible for another free month or another promotion.

/edit oops just saw someone say this exact thing down below..

    • +1

Had me curious; just did the math.

55 hours per week, across 2 services.
Works out OK, since one of them is Amazon, which is significantly subsidised by my use of prime delivery literally every day.

    • +3

Most people I know now only sign up to a service for a month at a time, binge watch what they want then cancel and sign up to another service, watch what they want then cancel and on and on.

      • This is the most efficient yes, but more and more streaming services are doing weekly shows now and find it hard to ignore 'spoilers'.

        • -2

Disposable email addresses, and '1c remaining' visa gift cards are a hell of a tool for these scenarios, heh.

        • True. I haven't worried about it as Prime obviously has other benefits and my parents use Netflix regularly so I haven't bothered canceling those. The over expansion of streaming services is just going to see people dusting off their tricorn hats and a return to the old days.

          • +1

@apsilon: I run in a geeky circle, no doubt, so I know we arent the norm.

            With that out of the way;
Nobody I know doesnt run some sort of media server or at least a download tool to watch things offline.

While not the norm; we're not unicorns yet.

            • @MasterScythe: Everyone I know used to be like that but dropped off as streaming become more available and affordable, It's shifting course again though now.

              • @apsilon: My 'scene' saw a bit of a dip when streaming was new, adsl and cable kinda limited the ability to sanely download 'on demand'.

But ever since NBN became a thing, local is king.

I think part of it, is that its fast enough to download, but slow enough that true multitasking is still kinda meh.

If someone in the house wants to watch "TV" while you stream, or upload or such; you start walking a finer line than is comfortable.

Just rent a seedbox and carry on.

            • @MasterScythe: Who thinks im lying? Show ye'self coward!

      • +1

most people i know just borrow other peoples accounts

    • A combination of account sharing and signing up via other countries is the way to go. We have access to 5 services, only paying around $10 a month (paying for 3 through various cheap means, using someone elses account for the other 2).

    • +1

Luckily I have a large 'family', so our household only pays for Netflix, Kayo for $5 a month and we get Prime mainly for postage savings alone, but the streaming is nice.

From that we get the sister-in-laws Stan, and Brothers disney+.
12 months free Apple TV+ just ran a month or so ago, I'll sign up in a couple of months and binge Ted Laso and give it up again.

    • If you're paying too much for streaming subscriptions, see the ozbargain classifieds - there are serious cheap streaming deals there to be had, where people have signed up on overseas accounts etc…and/or on "family plans"… I've never had any issues.

  • +2

Is there anything exclusive to the service worth watching?

    • +5

Very subjective obviously, but IMO as a subscriber thx to that hall of fame Ozbargain deal a few months ago, the answer - no

    • Those MTV shows if you are into them?

      • +1

A lot of MTV music rights were 'lost' most of the classic shows need to be pirated to be original.

The biggest standout in this space is Daria.

    • iCarly

    • +4

Dexter new season if you were a fan back in the day

    • +2

      Just having a quick browse.
Yellow Jackets sounds decent and has been reviewed well.
Also getting old Nickelodeon shows (Hey Arnold, Ahh Real Monters, CatDog, etc) is pretty nice.
Overall doesn't seem worth paying for, personally.

    • +1

The new series of Dexter!!!! One of my fav shows.
