Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (4K Ultra HD, Extended & Theatrical Editions) - $48.30 + Delivery (Free C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

900

Yep, it's Christmas time again and what better stocking filler for the person in your life with heaps of time on their hands.
$69 is not bad price, appears to have been cheaper from time to time but this is not a bad price for the amount of content.

    Excellent documentary!

  • +3

    I’d wait till Black Friday.

  • +26

It's just about a bunch of people walking.

Three movies of people walking to a volcano!

Even the trees walked in those movies!

    • No wonder my brother always falls asleep when watching any of those 3 movies.

      • +12

Now he can get a deeper sleep with the extended edition.

    • (profanity)' A.

    • -4

I will say, the Two Towers extended cut is brutal. Never again.

    • +5
    • And someone moaning about a precious

    • -1

Jay said this in Jay and silent bob

    • To be fair…there is a little bit of running too.

  • I'm sure there will be a sale to bring this down further very soon

  • Was 20% off one or two weeks ago. Wait for black friday.

  • Definetly wait until black friday. It is normally part of JB's buy one get one free too so I wouldn't pay more then $50 for it personally.

  • Pricey, bought during prime day for $47.50

    • +7

      But this is $69

Can only be out done by $42.0

    Great trilogy

Better than Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Avengers

    • +8

      That’s a pretty awesome trilogy

    • -8

Indeed, Avengers would have come close if it weren't for End Game, that part didn't cut it for me.

      • I still haven't watched endgame or Captain Marvel. I liked the ending of infinity war.

        • I liked the ending of infinity war.

I didn't, it just went on forever.

      • Great now the SJW's out to get me :D

    • You forgot Star Wars

      • Which star wars trilogy though?

        • +2

4-6 but should add Rogue One as a bonus probably the best Star Wars movie since the original.

  • +5

    $69 nice

  • +3

    watched on C1, so good

    • What player do you have? I have a C1 as well and am not sure what dolby vision supported player to get…

  • -3

$0 Netflix 1 month free trial

    • +1

      $0 if you pirate it

    • $0 get it from my brother

    • The experience you get from physical media leaves streaming in its dust. LOTR is one of a handful of movies I'd actually buy. I still haven't watched a UHD disc on my OLED but even Bluray is absolutely no comparison.

  • Long live the RINGS!

  • +1

Anyone else think the box art design is kinda ugly or trashy or out of character or something?
Like why is the ring of power displayed like a bright white ring light with paint splatter coming of it?

    • Yeah you're right, it's pretty tacky.

  • -3

so these are Blu Ray? hmmm I don't have a Blu Ray player any more.

    • +16

Assuming you have the same issues with the novels then? Not every movie has to have wide representation, the world has room for lots of different stories. This one is based on Tolkien's experience in WW1 with a bunch of other guys, and set in a fictional ye olde time England with a bunch of white people. The films have very positive messages for inclusivity with the relationships between the different races of beings, and also very positive male role models and male relationships compared with your typical blockbuster.
I think they've stood the test of time incredibly well.

      • +14

I believe they are being sarcastic

      • Thats because the novel was written when female characters were just side characters and Peter Jackson re-created it fairly faithfully

    • +2

      /s

    • +2

Nor acknowledgement of indigenous goblin, troll and orc communities.

  • Possible to Click and Collect now while still in stock but don't pick up till after Black Friday Sales in case the price goes down?

    • +1

Yes, I'm still to pick up from pre lockdown in Vic

  • Google Play has this for 39.99 https://play.google.com/store/movies/details/The_Lord_Of_The…
    and all 6 films for $70.99 https://play.google.com/store/movies/details/Middle_earth_Ex…
I don't think it has any special features, but serious question, how good / bad do these 4k offerings present, streamed? Have been deciding if worth using rewards credit for these, or wait for a physical special such as this?

    • +3

Physical is always better and has native 4k.

    • This only has compressed 5.1 audio. These discs use truehd 7.1 Dolby Atmos which through a supported system is substantially better.

      • +1

Dolby Digital “5.1” recommends surround speakers be 2 feet above audience, thus providing height, in addition to ambience. IMO, for “most” home theatre setups, this (even compressed) is more than enough.

Fun fact: Dolby Atmos doesn’t mandate uncompressed audio (hence, Apple TV+).

        • You clearly don't have a proper Dolby Atnos setup with separates. I have a 5.1.2 system with two ceiling speakers installed powered by a midrange AVR (so fairly entry level setup) and the difference between compressed Atmos you get from streaming services and uncompressed you get from bluray are night and day. Even with a half decent soundbar the difference would be noticeable

          • @merajaan: Thanks all, for the above feedback, maybe I'll use my credit on something a little less epic and grab these discs sometime.
@merajaan I had to google your extra ".2" - wasn't aware of that one, maybe you could weigh-in on my other question re home theatre https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/663643 ?
            TIA =)

  • This or this

    • +2

I have both (bought the collectors edition from Jb yesterday). Go the latter if you want the hobbit films as well and some little extras. I'd say it's a must have for massive fans of the LOTR and Hobbit films and Tolkien in general, but the former is just as good for the films.

      • My budget does not extend to $499 for a gift of this series. May pick up the standalone hobbit trilogy separately.
Also I don't have 3 decades to go through the 40 something discs in that collection?

  • +1

Extended version of return of the king

    Shudder

Comes with 14 different potential ending points as opposed to the 9 in the theatrical release

    • I only rewatched the trilogy in the last few weeks. My take is avoid the extended edition for Fellowship like the plague, but it's a necessity for Towers & Return.

      • I'll give it a shot.

  • This will probably be buried, but $69 is its new standard price. You're better off waiting for the next 20% off sale.

  • +1

    Might be worth saying it's 48.30 now…

    • $41 with coles gift cards. Ka-ching, sold.

      That's 6 cents per minute.

      • Dun dun duuuuun, dun dun duuuuun, dun dun duuuuuuuuuuuun, duuuun duuuuun duuuuuuuun!

  • 9 discs - so for 1 movie you need to change discs 3 times?

  • Ordered from Amazon today they haven't had this in-stock for yonks.

    • Yeah I bought it as a stocking filler when I listed at $69. Then the 30% off sale at JB happened and I walked back in for a $21 refund.
Spent that money on oportos whilst there so Westfield's is the true Victor.
