Advice Please - Home Theatre - Ohms and watts

Hi Community!

Seeking advice on speaker compatibility, I have an old Sony 5.1 DAV-DZ750K DVD with tall-boy speakers https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/support/sound-bars-home-…

Apart from the special shape connectors, would these speakers be ok if I got the Yamaha RXV385B AV Receiver from deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/586168

Watts I can compare, but I'm not across the ohm info, etc and don't want to blow them up

This amp looks fine, been in plenty of deals, and I can't see myself ever needing 5.2 or ever 7.anything, I'm no audiophile

HDMI 2.1 not a concern (but I thought 1080 wasn't a priority back in 2007 either)

I do have a 3d Sony and player (still fun) so passthrough is useful, if anyone recommends anything else - I'll be waiting for this to go back to special pricing if it is confirmed suitable
That-said, there are a couple of others in similar price range
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/164946878178?_trkparms=amclksrc%…
and
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YAMAHA-70W-X-5-B-T-4X-HDMI-DOLBY…
which seem to come in round close price sometimes - any significant features between them?

Finally, the often-posted Yamaha YHT-1840B 5.1ch Home Theatre Pack https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/442819
can come in at the same low price - does it have all the features of the amp-only Yamaha RXV385B or is it chalk-and-cheese? Would IT work with my speakers? (I can re-purpose the included ones, I like my tall-boy speakers for the room layout)

Thanks in advance for any input to put my mind at ease :)

  • IMHO if you're spending that sort of money on an amp i'd definitely consider upgrading the speakers.
They 'stylish/minimal' speaker phase has now turned into soundbars.

My take is that if you want to be minimalist go for an Atmos soundbar which won't require an amplifier and will be pretty compatible with current systems.

If you want to retain your individual speaker layout (much better for image and overall power) then i'd turf the sony 5.1 system and pick up some proper floorstanders off marketplace/gumtree for $200-$400. Could even get an amp equivalent or better than the one you're looking at thrown in for the same price.
Jamo, Dali, Bowers and Wilkins, Klipsch, Kef, Polk. Can't really go wrong with any of them.

    • Thanks Drakesy, I'd prefer to stick with the separate speaker option over a sound-bar, and a little too wary of used, taking the cynical approach of "probably thrashed", and no way to transport efficiently / test / return if no good.
The issue I have right now is lack of functionality (input/outputs, B/T), not the power of the speakers, they are plenty-grunty for the room / my needs.
I will note the brands you mention though, thank you!

      • Generally the second hand ones are pretty reliable, just demo them first, I've bought multiple ones off gumtree and they've all been amazing.
